Almost Near

Today's Tids Issue 2,269
Opening Stuff

At the inaugural yesterday, Governor Chafee-Lite actually said, "Taxpayers must give the government resources to do its job well." Excuse me! Read That: "I need to squeeze more money out of you to pay off my debt to the unions who endorsed me." What a mess.

Naval Captain Owen Honors was fired over "Profanity Laden Comedy Sketches". Sounds like your average evening on HBO.

U. Florida swimmer, 18 year old Elizabeth Beisel, makes Rhode Island look good, no make that great...despite the politicians.

The Question:
Which car brands were the winners and losers in 2010.

Back to More Stuff:
Regardless of how much some people have little orgasms over green energy ideas on the drawing boards across America, the fact remains that cars still run on gas. And will be running on gas in the main for many years to come. And we aren't maximizing all of the US owned oil deposits. As it has been for the past fifty or so years while some of the brightest scientists and engineers have looking for that new source of energy, the results appear exciting, but they just aren't cost effective. They have sex appeal but are not efficient. I'm all for finding a good alternative, as are energy companies who have invested over $58 Billion in their quest. But the fact remain,s we have to keep gas flowing and we should be doing it in the US.

Often you can discover great new music in your own collection. A few years ago I heard a little piano piece by British composer Gerald Finzi. So I went alooking for all things Finzi and came home with a piece called "Intimations of Immortality". I don't remember it moving me at the time. But, this weekend I dragged it out and found it to be incredibly pleasant. Must be the mood.

Why liberal economists produce train wrecks Department:
In his inaugural speech yesterday, Governor Chafee-Lite actually said, "These two actions (Rescinding previous Gov's exec order requiring E-Verify for illegals and approval of gay marriage) will do more for economic growth than any economic development loan." God help us.

One of my all time heart threatening recipes is risotto. In fact, I used to dump rice into a can of cream of chicken soup, add a few chopped onions, lemon and Parmesan cheese and cook til a gummy, artery clogging mess. What an absolute treat! Here's a real professional recipe for Risotto, Chicken and broccoli. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Peel 1 lb broccoli stalks (I would say cut off stalks) and place peels in pan with 4 cps chix stock, 3 parsley sprigs, 1 tsp dried Thyme and one bay leaf. Bring to boil and sim for 10 mins. Drain off solids. Return stock to saucc pan. While stock simmers, cut broc crowns into florets and stems into 1 inch pieces (I would say throw out stems). Rinse and pat dry two chix breast halves, cut into 1 inch squares and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Saute chix chunks in 4 tbs unsalted butter for about 2 mins. Remove chix with slotted spoon. Add to butt, 1 lrg sliced onion, 3 minced garlic cloves and cook til onion is translucent. Add to that 2 cps arborio rice and cook 2 mins. Stir. Add 1/2 cp dry white wine, raise heat to med and cook 3 mins. Add stock, chix. Bring to boil. Scrape all into baking pan, cover with foil, bake 10 mins. Stir in Broc. Bake 15-20 mins. Stir in 1/4 cp Parm cheese. Sorry this was so long, but it can't be bad.

In the credits following the movie True Grit there is an item "Matt Damon's Abs Double". Is there anything left in this world that is real?

When traveling, be sure to pack bug spray when visiting Cincinnati, Chi, Det, NYC and Columbus Ohio. These five, according to Orkin and Terminix, are the cities most heavily infested with bedbugs. Of course, the bug spray may get you arrested if you try to sneak it on a plane in your underware.

There is nothing worse than the amateur who finds it necessary to criticize the talented. But, being an inveterate hypocrite I'll do it any way. I have seen several marine scenes lately and for the most part they were pretty good. But, I have learned how to separate the talented amateur from the very accomplished. It is the way the boats or ships sit in the water. Look at he waterline and often a boat floats separately with no apparent coherence with the sea. Yeah, I know...stupid.

The Answer:
The big winners were the Jeep, Buick. Ford Fusion, Kia and Hyundai. The biggest loser was Honda and also in the negative column was the former 600 pound gorilla-- Toyota.

See Ya Tomorrow:
So, the opening of the new novel was short. You have to start somewhere.
