Today's Tids Issue 2,685
Opening Stuff:
A lot of the Obama advisers and media advocates are ruing the decision by their guy not to bring up three things in the first debate: 1. Bain Capital 2. Income Tax returns 3. The dreaded secret tape and the 47%. Well, if you have been watching closely, Bain and the Tax returns are Romney strengths, where that challenger could have easily said, "Thanks for bringing up Bain for that's where I first started repairing broken companies to save jobs. And on the returns, even the Obama handlers know that 30% contributions to charities is a good thing. Of course if the 0-Man had brought up the tape, Romney could have said something like, "Oh you mean that secret tape about strategizing exploited out of context, and, by the way, eerily similar to your secret tape in 2008 where you demeaned religious Pennsylvanians who carried guns.
Here's what I'm hoping. I am not liking at all this ruckus between American Idol judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj and hoping the producers don't make the feud a centerpiece of next year's show taking away from the performers. I have enjoyed AI, and the Tids Entertainment Editor enjoys the weekly reporting, but I have walked away from many a reality entertainment show because of the judges, and that includes the ever popular Dancin' with the Stars.
The Question:
What do you think are the ten Top battles of WWII?
The Headlines:
--Jobless Rate falls To 7.8%; Number Of People With Part-Time Jobs Who Want Full Time Jobs Rose 7.6%.
--Meningitis Outbreak Widens Dramatically.
--Wall Street Pounces On New, Positive Job Numbers
--Parents Of Rutger's Gay Student Who Killed Self Decide Not To Sue Anyone.
--Greece To run Out Of Money By November; Merkl Visits Struggling Country.
--Red Sox Fire Valentine; Solution To Problems Long way Off.
The Family Circle First Lady Cookie Contest has Michelle Obama's super fattening black and white chocolate chip cookie beating Ann Romney's M&M entry in the closest margin of victory in history, about 4,663 to 4,437. In the past 4 of 5 contests, the wife of the winning candidate has won. The good news is that the one who lost was Michelle Obama against Cindy McCain.
Of note, on a TV cooking show that tried the cookies and where Ann beat Michelle 6-4, one of the assembled chefs said that Ann Romney's cookie looked much more liberal.
You have probably read about France's new socialist President Francios Hollande going after the rich (like you know who) and raising their taxes to 75% so he could spend more on public sector jobs among other things. Not working! Capital has legs. Factories are closing left and right an that includes a Peugeot factory employing 8,000. It appears that the ominous signal from Hollande was all the capitalists in the country needed to move elsewhere and get out from under not only the potentially dangerous new presidential regime, but also an economy almost totally controlled by the most oppressive big time labor unions in Europe. Sounds like the New England textile industry of the thirties when they moved to the then union free South. Ah, free enterprise!
Maybe it's about time I tuned in on The X-Factor to see what's happening. It looks they are out of the dreadful audition segments and are now sorting out the best form Providence RI, Kansas City Mo, SanFran, Greensboro NC and Austin Texas. They are down to about 60 performers. I may start checking it out for you in a couple of weeks. Let's hope the Singer picks are better than the NFL picks. But then, there are no substitute judges on XF.
On Thursday, the prognosticators had the jobless rate going from 8.0% to 8.1%, yet the new report had it falling to 7.8%. How can they be that far off? We added about 133,000 jobs last month. Seems weird. It will be interesting to see the adjustments in a month or two.
The guffaws you heard from across the sea yesterday were in response to the Finance Ministers pronouncement that Spain does not need a bailout. Yes the Fin Min brought down the house as if it were a SNL parody.
Reading Between the Lines Movie Reviews:
--Taken 2 was high on my list, but I'm seeing bad reviews. I'll still see it cause I like high dram, CIA people, international conspiracy films. This version of Brian and Kims war against evil villains.looks a little more predictable. It opens with Brian and his wife as kidnap victims and Kim, who is now 29, to the rescue. After the rescue it just erupts into non-stop action with one much too long, I've-seen-it-before car chase.
--Frankenweenie is the kids animated film of the week and is a good one for Halloween, which will be enjoyed by parents too.
--In Pitch Perfect a loner freshman in college finds herself forced into a clique, which turns out to be a group of mean girls who have a unique talent for harmonizing, Our heroine and new associates climb all the way to the top of intercollegiate a cappella. I think it will be entertaining and satisfying despite the possible predictability.
In a rush today. The serial novel The Conscience will return Monday.
Interesting that in the typically Obama, Democrat leaning editorial department of the Providence Journal, they are questioning the motives of the President and the Admin in their quite apparent effort to cover-up the facts about the murder of Ambassador Stevens.
The Answer:
10. The battle of France 9. Operation Overlord (Normandy Landing) 8. Battle of Guadalcanal 7. Battle of Leyte Gulf 6. Battle of Moscow 5. Battle of Kursk 4. Battle of Midway 3. Operation Barbarossa 2. Battle of Stalingrad 1. Battle of Britain Interesting that the several Battles in USSR were so critical as was Britain. If Britain had fallen most of the others key European battles may have been lost and one may never have been in existence -- Normandy Landing.
I am totally not surprised by anything positive that happens to the economy in these months before the election. First, after four long years a country as big and innately strong as the USA should be starting to breathe fresh air again. Second, it's one month before the election.
Hope your weekend is delectable, delicious and deliriously happy
