Today's Tids Issue 3,236
Opening Stuff:
Regardless of what’s
going on in the world, kids will always remember Mom’s and hamburgers.
I have the same problem
understanding the popularity of items on new menus as I do today’s bland music
that makes kids rapturous. I think I have met, and turned that corner into what
was.
The similarities in
the Garner chokehold and Brown shooting cases were that the police encountered
lawbreaking and moved to stop it.
Eric Holder may
never retire if he can keep on trumping up civil rights cases.
The Question:
Jean Beliveau of the old Montreal Canadians died yesterday. As
great as he was, he almost played second fiddle to another Canadians’ super
skater. Who was that? Bonus: Another
old hockey superstar, Gordie Howe is in terrible shape, unresponsive and near
death according to his family. He and two other guys formed one of the all time
great lines – The Production Line -- for the Detroit Red Wings. Who were the
other two?

In looking at that Garner
chokehold case, it appears to me that the policeman could have eased the
hold on the 350 pound man when he said, “I can’t breathe”. That’s about all I
know. I don’t believe that Garner should have lost his life.
Here’s what I also
believe. Every day police work in these disgusting pits of criminality all
over the country and when they see illegal activities they have to react
sensibly employing measures that will protect themselves and fellow police.
Nobody knows that a super large person is in fact a gentle giant, or that a punk
baby faced youngster is a vicious killer. It’s not about race but about where
the crime occurs and the criminals. Choosing a life of crime is an option fraught
with problems.
A lot of people would
like to protest my NFL Picks. Last week we were 10-6. There are several “Who
Cares” games that could go either way. The Giants have become so unpredictable especially
after last week’s fade, but they will wake up to beat Tenn. NO is in first
place because teams like Carolina have been so disappointing. NO to eke out. Minn
should romp over the Jets. Jax beat the Giants last week and showed some heart.
Houston has been up and down. Houston still has an outside chance and needs win.
Balt and Miami are in fights for the playoffs. Balt is confusing so I’m picking
Miami the home team that can look like a winner. Tonight Dallas has to pick it
up and beat Chi in windy city. They will. Cinn-Pitt, two hard to rely upon teams,
but always in a war, and I’m going for Cinn. St. Louis and Washington is a
nothing game, but then Rams are playing like real contenders. They will win
here. Too bad they started so late. Indy-Cleve – wow! I really don’t know here,
the media darlings versus the team of the great people of Cleveland. I’m picking
the upset, Browns. Detroit will beat a tough TB at home. I love what Buffalo is
doing, but Denver should win at home. KC disappointed last week and Arizona
popped up flawed. ”A” to rebound at home. SF, another team in which I have lost
faith, should win over Oakland. Atlanta is waking up but Green Bay looks powerful.
And now two key, killer games: Seattle is putting it back together but Philly
looks unstoppable when it plays like it did last week. I have no clue, but I’ll
go Iggles at home in a squeaker. And then it’s another excellent QB battle.
Brady-Rivers. SD is regaining its early season form, but NE didn’t look awful
losing last week. I think the Pats will bounce back. Record to date:
120-69. We’re creeping up.
While everybody was watching
protest marches, it was announced today that China officially snuck by the USA
into number one position as the top world economy -- $17.6 Trillion total
output to $17.4T. Double yikes! For the first time since US Grant was
President, we are not then top economic power. Life won’t change tomorrow but
it will over time. Consider that for 200 years or so the world economy has been
controlled by Britain and the US, two relatively stable democratic, constitutional,
orderly human rights societies. Strong military and political powers are always
built upon the strongest economy. We have seen that secession from France to
Spain to UK to USA. Maybe you didn’t
feel the tremors, but you should start avoiding large cracks in the sidewalk.
But then, a
Marxist society has always been good at shooting itself in the foot.
I was bummed when
Danika Shirey was voted off The Voice. She was the best pure singer of the
bunch, and easily one fo the top 5. I guess young female voters (The apparent
dominating voter group) don’t get melodic tunes like These Dreams.
A survey by “You Gov”
surveys, a pretty active opinion generator in the USA, says that of hamburgers
Americans like Five Guys and Burger King tied at the top and are followed by
“In-N-Out”, Wendy’s and McDonalds.
I always feel
trepidations about the thought of going to NYC, with the crowds and dealing
with the denizens. Then I realize that I grew up there and have DNA going back
at least 6-8 G. What’s to worry? It must be the inflated price of everything.
The government infringes
on peoples civil rights when they tax people to “Get even”.
Jean Beliveau,
the skating genius from the Montreal Canadians who died yesterday was one of
those heroes of my youth. I hear he was a good guy, and I remember there was definitely something
about him that brought a smile to my face in the forties.
There’s some noise
coming out of Michael Sam’s camp that he must have been discriminated against
considering he was the named Top Defensive Player in the SEC. Of course,
Heisman winners (Top Player in USA) have routinely fallen by the wayside in the
NFL. As have many can’t miss superstars. The NFL needs what it needs, and if
you don’t fit, that’s it.
The Answer:
Ean played with some greats and Guy lefleur wasn’t chopped
iver, but oOf course, Maurice “The Rocket” Richard was the superstar of the 40’s-50’s
era. Bonus: Don’t tell that to
Gordie Howe, who as a rookie went to Montreal and knocked out the great Richard
cold with one swift punch. That’s when he played with the super line including
Ted Lindsey and Sid Abel. Ted was another of my heroes.
Encore for Danika
Shirey’s song:
And here’s Heart:
