Today's Tids Issue 2,071
Opening Stuff:
Naps make you smarter. It’s a lot like that notice that creeps upon your computer from time to time asking if you want to clear out old stuff and move it to archives. New science says that naps help the mind perform the same function. Clear out dead stuff and open up room for refreshing. So, lay down, close your eyes and press “OK”.
It seems now that the Republicans will be mere background drapes for an Obama presentation of a new Health Care Plan. This bipartisan summit for the mutual exchange of ideas ended yesterday as 0-Man introduced his new plan 3 days before the much ballyhooed love fest. This new plan is like but $200 billion richer than the old Senate program despised by 2/3’s of Americans. It looks like a political move where 0-Man can now say, “Look I have a new bill with Republican ideas, so if you balk at this one you are the problem in America”. However, I think he has opened the door for legitimate GOP resistance.
The Question:
What is the word origin of canary?

Back to Stuff:
There is a raging protest brewing out side the Olympics sled runs. Apparently groups representing Tom, Dick, Harry, Jacob, Ethan, Matt and a host of others are asking for fairness in naming sleds. “Who did “Bob” pay off, any how?”, they shout. Officials are growing concerned knowing that they have yet to hear from the women. Jessled? Lindasled? Penelope sled?
“It’s not Perfect”. With those words Republic savior Scott Brown joined the ranks of not so perfect politicians willing to accept less than good. Brown also showed that he as a lifelong Politician has something in the back of his mind that says Government is the answer. That jobs occur at the behest of government. But what really bothers me about his vote is that it is in an alliance with the awful Harry Reid. I wonder what post the scoundrel offered Brown in exchange?
Get ready to find your bunker. It is reported that the Obama Biography by Pulitzer prize author and New Yorker Editor David Remnick will hit the stands this Spring. I guess they’re trying to get it out while he’s still in office.
The Libs are reporting that Austin Kamikaze pilot Stack is a “Tea Party” hero, trying to cast aspersions on these groups formed to revive the greatness of America. What they fail to mention is that Stack was an equal opportunity nutcase supporting even more liberal than conservative causes in his singular agenda.
The Novel:
Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 55 continues. –What did Wiley have on his mind? He had been pleasant all through the meeting, but now he was apparently looking for something from me. Did Sarah tell him something? I doubt it. Nobody knows anything about me except me. Finally Wiley ended the awkward silence. “You are the beneficiary of Bromsky’s misdeeds. I thought you might have more to say.” I looked calmly at him, “No I don’t.” Finally Izzy broke in, but was cautious. “Jack, Kent doesn’t generally over answer an open ended question. Maybe if you were more direct like asking what he thought of Bromsky?” She then turned to me, “Tell Jack what you thought of Seymore, Kent.” Good old Izzy, I thought. “I thought Seymore Bromsky was brilliant. But I never trusted him. I don’t dwell on Seymore. Never have. He’s gone. That’s it.” Now I am really tired of this meeting. I thought Izzy would now suggest moving into her office for a celebratory drink, but Jack Wiley continued. I guess I know who holds our purse strings now. Let’s hope they put Sarah/Maggie in charge. I smiled to myself. “Kent, may I call you Kent”, I nodded, “You are the most important guy in this company. I just want to get to know you better.” Yikes, I thought. I’m going to be a puppet.
Back to Stuff Again:
In a discussion between a conservative and a moderate about Obama’s socialist tendencies, the moderate in support of 0-Man said that his bailout of the banking industry “saved Capitalism”. No!...capitalism operates best when failure is not rewarded. Capitalism works when the winners win and the losers lose without governemtn intervention. What O-man and the admin (Bush and Paulson before them) have created is an entitlement financial industry without the traditional boundaries of sensible free enterprise. Without the potential for self regulation. The only self regulation they practice is paying off members of the SEC with good jobs in their companies. No, bailouts didn’t save capitalism; it just pushed it further into a murky hole.
Let’s face it, the secular press loves headlines like “God is Dead”. But new reports say just the opposite. The largest US religion, Catholics (68 Million) had a 1.5% increased in membership. The Mormans (6 Million) also had a nice 1.7% rise. The 2nd and 3rd largest denominations – Southern Baptists and Methodists – had a small decline of about .3%. On the other hand, newer progressive offshoots of traditional Christian groups showed nice increases off-setting the small declines of the 2 and 3 sects. God is in the house.
Have you noticed that any time citizens ask schools to start cutting back because there is no more money, the first thing the School Boards do is cut sports. With this, they are always sure to bring the most vocal support for no more cuts. Town Councils should elect school boards and make those membesr beholden to them.
It is my humble opinion that the homebuilding industry is the most wasteful of all industries. Not that they aren’t necessarily inefficient at what they do…but that most of what they do isn’t really necessary. Builders got to build; developers got to develop; Whether or not you need it.
If architects are so good, why can’t they build schools that last longer than 30-40 years.
Now that Tiger has popularized rehab for addictions, maybe we should send congress away for 6 months to help them control addictive spending. It could be the best money the taxpayer has ever spent.
The Answer:
A Northwest African Chieftain named Juba always wanted to explore the fabled islands whose peaks could be seen for the shore of his land Mauratania. Mariners and Greek lore said they were abundant with food and it was a beautiful place with snow topped mountains reaching 11,0000 feet. They were called the “Fortunate Islands” or “Isles of the Blest”. Upon arriving Juba loved the beauty, but also noticed that the islands were overrun by large wild dogs. He thus named the island Canaria “Isle of Dogs” from Canis – dog. English explorers called them canary islands. Many years later after Juba and the extinction of the dogs, the island songbirds were domesticated and shipped throughout Europe as Canarys – the original Bird-Dog.
The End:
Actually…I always thought it was Tids that made you smarter.
