Today's Tids Issue 2,933
Opening Stuff:
Is there anything more beautiful than these crystalline September days that awaken the senses; Cool nights that reinvigorate tired brain cells; Brilliant views of greens and deep blue that stimulate the imagination; The gleaming orange setting sun which each evening soothes the furrowed brows of daily toilers? Yet, the beauty of perfect Autumn days can be found all year long in the loving, warm and caring hearts of those who's laughter and kindness permeates the hearts of others. When clouds fill the blue sky a simple smile from a friend always brings sunshine.
Astonishing! When things seem bleak; When you are in a hole so deep that the sun has stopped shining in, just take a look at what the US America's cup boat did yesterday to win the great cup. Down 8-1 in a race series where the first to win 9 is the champion, there was no way to think that the US had a chance. An ill wind or broken piece of hardware could knock them out for good in a second or two. But this team was not like some who might give into impossible tasks; they to a man dug down, analyzed everything they had been doing and looked for ways to changeover what had been years of practiced discipline into an entirely new program for winning. To abandon ingrained practices in one night and become a winning entity on a new day. But, winning eight races in a row? Impossible! No team however valiant could ever do that. They never said never. The Oracle boat won one race, and then another, and another until yesterday morning when unbeliveably it was 8 to 8, with the starting line for a winner take all match clearly in sight. They overcame the ill winds, the mechanical surprises, and beat a great team of sailors from down under New Zealand. America, however, was the true down under team, a team of courageous, skillful men who could only see the bright skies above the hole. What a great lesson on never giving up. Always looking forward.
I'm sure that there are intakes
of breath when I utter various unilateral
pronouncements about what in this world is good and what's not -- many,
"Who says" moments from all of you who know better than I. But, I can
say unequivocally, willing to suffer the slings and arrows of naysayers,
that the Thomas Brand, makers of the best by far English muffins,
always delivers when introducing a new product. Right now I'm deep into
my latest addiction -- Thomas Cinnamon swirl toast.
The Question:
What the name of the so-called ground breaking TV show that first brought Billy Crystal into the limelight? Bonus: How many Americans were on the US winning boat Oracle?
The Headlines:
--New Jobless Claims Fall Unexpectedly To 305K.
--Stocks Rebound On Employment News, Q2 GDP Positive Reading.
--US Gov Releases From Prison Filmmaker Used As Goat By Admin For Their incompetence In Benghazi Affair.
--Kerry Looking Forward To Iran Talks.
--Militant Action Erupts In India Prior To India-Pakistan Talks.
--US Cash Running Low Earlier Than Originally Forecast.
--While Oracle's Larry Ellison Basks In America's Cup Victory, Stockholders Blast His Years Of High Salary.
It's "NFL Pick-'em" Time again, and the Tids Sports Department humbly throws it's scarred helmet inside the door before exposing it's battered body to the laughter of skeptics. What a mess last week was. 7-9 may be the worst ever. I'm thinking Oracle as I wonder how to move my record % back up to the seventies (Now at a dismal 58%). I'm thinking "never say die' but I'm looking at another slate of tough picks.

If America wasn't broke, it wouldn't have to raise the debt ceiling to pay it's bills.
It's nice to live in a state where on the cover of the largest daily newspaper we see a giant picture of joyful sailors with the 162 year old America's Cup a under an huge headline heralding achievement against impossible odds. Too often these days we seem to live in a "That's the way it is, and we're going to have to live with it" environment where people feel destiny trumps the potential for achievement.. Wouldn't be great if Politicians fought to overcome the bleakness of mediocrity, giving into for expediency. Wouldn't be wonderful if we raised the bar instead of giving in, and everybody took advantage of the freedom to overcome individual circumstances and achieve dreams. Anything can be done. Really. It can..
From great highs to new lows, Department:
Nothing is really surprising any more when it comes to the savagery of humans against humans. Attilla the Hun had nothing on the Pakistan militants who yesterday shot down a rescue helicoptor trying to save people in the wake of the horrendous Pakistan earthquake. God help us.
Speaking of comebacks of Oracle proportions, the 2004 Red Sox came back from the death, one nail left to seal the coffin, to beat the dismayed Ya-Ya-Ya- (Well, you know who I mean). I'm still smiling.
You know how in these run-away train movies the hero always manages to perform some otherworldly feat to stop the surging missile just before it plows in to a city of 100,000 innocents. I don't think there are any heroes around that can stop the ObamaCare express, out of control since the time when LollaPelosi released the breaks. Maybe there's a couple of America's Cup sailors who could find a way.
Here's a nice little poem I received in the email today:
*The Battling Boys of Benghazi.
So, now the opposition to Assad has been fractured as dozens of powerful factions yesterday stepped away from the united group to declare Syria an Islam state. All of a sudden Bashar looks like a warrior fighting the evil terrorists, a victim. Today US and allies look on wondering why they would ever want to ever get involved in the Middle East again. How many times must the West get fooled into having hope.

*The Battling Boys of Benghazi.
We're the battling boys of Benghazi
No fame,
No glory, no paparazzi.
Just a fiery death in a blazing hell
Defending our country we loved so well.
It wasn't our job,
But we answered the call,
fought to the Consulate and scaled the wall.
We pulled twenty Countrymen from the jaws of fate.
Led them to
safety, and stood at the gate.
Just the two of us, and foes by the score,
But we stood fast to bar the door.
Three calls for reinforcement,
But all were denied,
So we fought, and we fought,
And we fought 'till we died.
We gave our all for our Uncle Sam,
But Barack Obama didn't give a damn.
Just two dead seals who carried the load.
No thanks to us,
We were just, "Bumps In The Road".*
(*President Obama made the comment on 60 minutes that the
Benghazi incident was a "bump in the road" to
Middle East peace.)
The Answer:
"Soap" was the name of the show that parodied daytime melodrams and
opened the eyes of viewers to a world of TV rarely seen. Of the 11 crew
on the Oracle boat, but two were from the USA, including Newport sailor
Rome Kirby. The next race will be crewed by China. So, now the opposition to Assad has been fractured as dozens of powerful factions yesterday stepped away from the united group to declare Syria an Islam state.
