Today's Tids (Issue 3,186)
Opening Stuff:
There are days when
you wake up and realize how inane petty political bickering really is in
the grand scheme of things. I think of all the people who fight enormous human
battles on their own. With a smile, with courage, with a heart as strong as the lions of history. Some
fight problems of their own creation, but they fight hard and overcome. Some have
problems heaped upon them, beyond their control, yet they never complain, but
do what it takes to beat them back, cheerfully without shifting a burden to
others. There are days when things like NFl teams, vegetable eating, climate
change are merely fly specs on the wall of
an everyday life that we sometimes forget, but has so much of a greater and deeper
meaning. There are those days when your heart it saddened. Yet, you know that the
courage you have seen will keep you strong.
Well Tidsland, this
could be a shaky week for this column, so be prepared for gaps in your primary
reading habit.
Driving on a highway
makes you realize that the world could exist without so many laws. When the
roads are clear, the vast majority of people maximize speed to their driving skills.
As clogging comes, the people slow to meet the new challenges that appear. As
in every society there are outlaws who disregard responsibility and judgment. Someday
a tree will get in their way and justice will be served.
The Question:
Bridge is one of the great games of history. Where did it
come from? What US president loved Bridge and often mad e few bucks from it? Who
were the real historical Kings, Queens and Jacks represented in card decks?

This NFL controversy
tells me one thing about the new culture for sure -.-. Media loves being prosecutor,
judge and jury and there is a rising danger to the USA Legal System from
digital lynch mobs. Regardless of the hideous nature of crimes, this country
works because people are innocent until proven guilty. Justice is not served if
separate groups lop off heads.
I often wonder why
people choose UPS or FedEx over Us Post Office Priority Mail. I always use
USPS products and have never been disappointed. It always gets there in 2 days.
It’s easier to find a Post Office than a FedEx or UPS store. Their flat rate, ship anywhere boxes are great
rate savers. The real point here is that the services are pretty equivalent,
but the UPS, FedEx behemoths seem to get the popular nod…and they shouldn’t.
I see where the hot
new class action business is suing makers of highway guardrails for
defects. This is because people drive head into these rail ends have been
speared by metal components. Let me repeat that, “People who drive head into
these rail ends…,” are suing. As my sister would have said. “This makes me
crazy!”.
Lois Learner finally
emerged from seclusion, professing, “I didn’t do anything wrong.” Adrian
Peterson also said “I didn’t do anything wrong, it’s the way I was brought up”.
Lois was brought up by democrats.
Speaking of Dems,
they are pulling out the big Guns, sending Michelle out to campaign in the
areas in jeopardy. She’s offering free school lunches to all voters.
The Answer:
Bridge was derived from the Russian Whist known as Biritch
meaning “announcer” (Players announce their auction.) Books about the came
first appeared in the early 1700’s, with the first being written by a guy named
Edmond Hoyle! George Washington enjoyed Bridge and liked little wagers to make
it more exciting. Kings: Spades – David (Israel); Clubs – Alexander the Great:
Diamonds – Julius S+ Caesar; Hearts – Charlemagne, Charles the Great. Queens: Hearts – Judith, Wife of Louis I or
Judith in Apocrypha who slew Holofernes and the invading army; Diamonds – Rachael from Genesis; Spade –
Warrior Goddess Pallas; Clubs – Argine is believed to be anagram for Latin word
for “Queen” (Regina). Jacks: hearts – La
Hire, Comrad in Arms with Joan of Arc; Diamonds – Hector, Prince of Troy;
Spades – Ogier, Loyal Knight of Charlemagne; Clubs – Judas Maccabee who led
Jewish rebellion against syris (Others say it is Sir Lancelot).
I love the idea
that the “Queen of Hearts” is named after Judith.
