Everything is in the heart.

Today's Tids Issue 3,511
Opening Stuff:

Now that the market has become so discouraging, I think I’ll divert my attention to warming up my romantic juices so I can search for and write some good stuff for the Tids famous Valentine’s day edition. Hey it’s only 25 days away. – When I look at you I feel elated, indeed, quite intoxicated. My stock portfolio gives me a rash; makes want to get smashed. Emotions. Emotions. Emotions.

When you think about it, the ISIS demolition of the 1400 year old Christian monastery is not much different than renaming Mount McKinley – the shallow idea that history can be changed with the removal of symbols.

Safe reading zone: I never make jokes about Mafia hitmen, Mexican drug czars or ISIS executioners.

A running Wall Street joke is that “financial indexes have predicted 9 out of 5 recessions!” Many economists are saying that current panic is not necessarily mirrored by the economy itself. It’s chugging, and it could do better with a little more inflation, but it is not severely broken and should weather the current tantrum. However, it’s roaring growth is definitely slowing, so don’t expect big upsides for a while. Maybe stability is the best we can hope for a while.

Hillary – “The Lasher”. I like it. How many times have you read headlines that begin, “Hillary lashes out at…” Lashing is the art of diminishing the truth with boisterous bravado.

The Question:
I always liked Geena Davis. Name five of her best movies. Bonus: A 70 Year old actress named Tandy Cronyn will be putting on a one woman show at a local rural theater. Who do you think were her parents? (Limited Audience Bonus) What was the name of the well known Boston classical music aficionado who opened his WGBH program “Morning Pro Musica” with Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances suite #1.

The Headlines:
--Dow Chugging Positively in Morning Trading; Near 250 At Noon;  Jobless Apps Up 10K; Philly Fed Index Down For 5th Consecutive Month.
--Washington DC Could Get 3 Feet Of Snow. Philly Will Also Be Buried. New England Expected To Escape.
--Draghi Easing Remarks Have EuroStocks Jumping.
--Hillary Accuses Inspector General Of The Intelligence Community Of Conspiring With Republicans.
--ISIS Magazine Calls For More Intense War On Shiite Muslims; ISIS In Fallujah Prepare for Assault As Skirmishes Begin At City Limits.
--UK Judge Says Putin Probably behind Poisoning Of Ex-Moscow Insider Livinenko.
--Atlantic City Poised To Enter Bankruptcy As Christie Nixes Aid Package; Former Iconic Seaside Resort Regressed During Era Of Gambling Dominance.

I woke this morning full of tension realizing that it was just a mere 80 hours til the Pats meet the Broncs. I’ll be a wreck by Sunday noon. Hey, it’s only a game. Yeah, right.

The Repubs wouldn’t look so bad if they could time Government shutdowns with the arrival of giant snow storms.

Will late day profit taking kill our moment of euphoria? I’ll justlisten  to music and take a walk.

I loved what Governor Christie said after a reporter asked a question about school recesses: “Part of my responsibility as Governor is to veto stupid bills.” He went on to detail all of the bills that arise emotionally after an isolated incident. Most of those bills he said, would relegate us into a complete nanny state. Americans don’t like that.

Some in RI are hailing a new report, a very expensive !.3 Million report by Brookings which upon a closer look appears to be a plan for a state developed economy where bureaucrats pick winners and losers, as opposed to the old fashioned organic business world as normally developed by free and unfettered capitalism. This is not unlike China mapping out its plan for industry. BTW, RI is very good at fettering! And, more to come about the way the super price tag of $1.3 Million was financed, which appears somewhat fishy after closer look beneath the Ocean State’s surface.. That said, I like the industries that were singled out for growth. But, who’s to say that would not have occurred naturally if the state strangulation eased.

I like artists and certainly appreciate their talent, but some at times are a bit delusional about the deep meaning of their art.

Everybody knows that Putin is behind everything in Russia, so why was the UK judge opinion story about him ordering a poisoning the lead on news sites. Just another example of how superficial the media can be.

I think I know why scientists haven’t discovered planet #9 til now. The huge orb takes about 10,000 years to orbit the sun. In the thousand or so years astronomers have had the ability ot measure things in space, this behemoth has only traveled 10% of its excursion.

Before the threat of big snow, our Governor Raimondo was expected to be one of the Divas and Davos, and nobody here knew why she was going there in the first place..

Hey, is there a better name for a marauding tight end than Grrr-onk!

All that those Public Union devotees -- who often seem oblivious to mounting public debt – have to do is consider Puerto Rico as the crystal ball predicting the future of their beloved honey pot.

Speaking of failure, how about the former gold plated state Connecticut, which just lost the headquarters for the immense General Electric Company. That is just thetip of the iceburg, a symbol of the corrosion deep inside of what was one of the glory stars on the American flag – a balanced industrial/financial powerhouse with great paying jobs. But, that was before Repub/Independent Gov. Lowell Weiker (Squibb Heir) put in the first income tax, and the Dem legislature a year later forgot to pass a bill that would  cap the rate. Now Conn is just another failed state eaten alive by public unions, and now quite liberal congressional delegations. It is truly sad to see a beautiful, vigorous place go down hill.

The Parking Lot: Chapter 41 continues.
The tension grew as Jeremiah and his family filed into the small town building near the harbor in Sakonnet, now Tiverton. Elizabeth felt his hand grasp hers as the Howland family walked in through the rear door. She nudged him with her elbow, and then looked up and glared. That was to remind him to stay out of it and allow his father to lead the discussion. This was not his meeting. He should be there as the heir apparent, but it is known that most family members thought it wiser that he wasn’t.
The Hicks and the Howlands dominated the room, but the Cooks, Bartons, Osbournes, Bennetts and Cory’s would have plenty to say. It was a strange situation. Most of the towns people liked Richard, but because Richard was so dominant in land ownership, some of these key families felt a Howland alliance would  be better for them.
Jermiah eyed Ned Cook who was a friend of his, wondering how much that friendship would weigh if the discussions go heated. Frank Barton rapped his rifle on the long butterwood table, and the buzz stopped quickly. “We have had some pretty unSakonnet like happenin’s here lately and Richard has a plan that we should listen to carefully…” he paused, “Includin’ you Mark Howland. Howland just stared back with those ugly hatful eyes. The room tensed.
   Richard Stood.

The Answer:
My personal favorite Geena Davis film was The Long Kiss Goodnight. She won an Oscar for Best Supporting In Accidental Tourist. Other big moments were In Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own, The Fly, Beetlejuice and Stuart Little. She also won a Golden Globe for TV as Best Actress in Commander In Chief, which was primarily watched by the Hillary campaign Staff. Bonus: Tandy Cronyn is of course the daughter of the great acting duo, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. (Limited Bonus Q) For Bostonians with a classical ear, Robert J. Lertsemer was “it” for years beginning in  1971. The first thing you heard before Ancient Airs were birds chirping for several minutes, a very relaxed way to wake up to a new morning. Lertsemer one of those famous guys that nobody knows.

See, when I go in to my pre-Valentine romantic mode, I get back into those soothing mornings of yore, and more -- drifting back in time onto the silent memories. They can’t hurt. Or, maybe I’m still laughing at Rodney Dangerfield.

Let the farmers wives and daughters in colorful, flowing skirts  dance across the town square with their men stuffed into clean clothes for the day, Here the laughter and rise to the culmination of music celebrating a day’s work well done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BPloCq3ODE
