Today's Tids Issue #4,674
Been too long inside the box:
Day after day a nation sees the repeated negativity that only defines a problem. Hopeless and anger. But rarely is there a focus on a solution that would give hope. Only the cries for it.
“Pain is inevitable; Suffering is optional.” Dalai Lama.
In every business, government, or even simple household, for every rash decision made out of emotion there will be tens of new decisions necessary to meet the new challenges created by a thoughtless change.
A new wave of change is permeating our lives and producing new info about old sacred memories. One tells me that it was really Little Red, a Hood from Riding, Yorkshire England. That the wolf was a good person only in disguise to escape the wrath of Little Red. If that was not enough, how about kindly old Mother Goose. Yeah, you’re right, that’s how she got her name. Just ask the men of Baldersby, whose eye are always looking behind. And how about Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary? When asked how her Garden grew, Miss Contrary always replied, None of your F---ing business. (That’s why she was never on Facebook) Yes, things we thought were true and comforting may never exist again. Because now we are learning somebody else’s version of the truth. And, nobody seems to care.
The Seven Dwarfs were told that starting Monday they could only meet in groups of six. One of them isn’t Happy.
The Question:
Victoria was the first British Queen to ride on a train. In what year, plus or minus five years, do you think that occurred? Bonus: what do you think are the top ten Big bands of the swing era?

I knew this was going to happen the minute I saw that first statue toppling – Somebody will petition to change the name of Our State. Officially it is: The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. (It has been that since Rhode Island, the name for Aquidneck island with Newport and Portsmouth, was settled in 1637 and joined Providence and environs to create – the Colony of RI and PP until 1776.). They will say, how can you expect us to live under such a memory of degradation of humanity – as if anybody who feels degraded really knows that name in the first place. I hear the Leading contender for a new name is “Newport and everything else.” By the way, The word “Plantations” had nothing to do with slavery. In the 17th century it referred to colonies and settlements with agricultural economies. As simple as that. In a similar 2010 petition for the change, voters defeated it vote 78% to 22%.

Sometimes it’s good to look at the world through an alternative mind.
A special gift for me is Walkers Shortbread in any of its various styles. A special dinner treat for me are Idahoan instant Mashed potatoes. I know, nobody cares. But, sometimes these long days of repeated visual stress you just got to get out your inner self.
A non-partisan stress counsellor suggests that people, even if they are big supporters of the current events, stop watching the nightly news on cable and the big three networks. The counsellor says that stress, even if you don’t know it at the time, builds up from repeated showings of the Floyd affair and now many new videos of aggressiveness that are appearing nightly. Stress seeps in and it is insidious, eating away at both mental and physical health. It, she says, diminishes the ability to make rational decisions. She is urging people to turn off the TV, let the emotions recede and start thinking instead of reacting.
Speaking of Stress, the stock markets can do that to you. New research pointing out reasons for the rapid recovery during the last month says that it is retail driven, and it is retail driven because people have accumulated more savings by staying at home, and for many it is a substitute for sports betting and online gaming. The thought is according to the report by Deutsche Bank, with thoughts from Goldman. is that retail buying will not materially change. And the good news is that the institutions and hedge funds are still very inactive but poised to pounce.
You know you are getting old when you can spend a day getting rid of deceased friends and family in address books or email/text contacts list. As one friend once said, I thought life would be longer.
The other side of the story: According to the Chicago Sun-Times, between 7:00 PM Friday May 29 and 11:00 PM Sunday May 31 25, mainly young blacks, were shot down and killed while another 85 were murdered. Not by police, but maybe because there were not enough police in the neighborhood.
Did you hear why Hertz went bankrupt? They invested heavily in sedans while customers went elsewhere for SIV’s. But the sedans were probably a good buy. Not!

As restaurants reopen slowly, people are noticing that patrons are typically raising their voices when talking to a masked wait staff. Maybe they haven’t noticed that masks do not cover the ears.
A lot of economically secure people over the past 20 or so years have moved into cities and rebuilt many a broken-down neighborhood. I’m wondering if the same group will begin looking towards the quiet green countryside as a better option for safe living. And the cities will crumble again. You remember Newton – “For every action s there is…”
The Answer:
If you chose 1837 to 1847 you would be right, as the Queen hopped aboard in 1842. Bonus: Rankings about something that was hot 80 some years ago could be subject to many opinions and perhaps suspect. But, this list looks decent. Here it goes. The top big bands were Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Fletcher Henderson, Harry James, Charlie Barnet, Stan Kenton and Tex Beneke. Some like to stick the innovative Stan Kenton in there, but he was later. Some of the top memorable songs were Sing, Sing, Sing - BG, followed by Moonlight Serenade - GM, In the Mood - GM, Stompin’ at the Savoy – BG, Opus One – TD, A String of Pearls – GM, Skyliner CB, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You – TD, Begin the Beguine – AS, Take the A Train – DE, Woodchoppers Ball – WH, You Made Me Love You – HJ, Tuxedo Junction – GM, Sentimental Journey – LB. Though not a big band, The Andrew Sister were strong in the era with songs like Pennsylvania 6-5000 with Glenn Miller, Chattanooga Choo-Choo w/GM and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Other non-band notables of the era were Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haynes, Dinah Shore, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Cab Calloway, Doris Day, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Hines, Pops Waller, Tony Martin, Ray Eberle, Vaughn Monroe and many ore I may have forgotten.
