There is always something good

Today's Tids Issue 5,062

Adjustment Agility:

Happy Summer… E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!! Yes, today ends the decline. And tomorrow we receive nature’s Christmas present to us all, as the countdown to Summer begins with the first of longer days again. Enjoy a toasty December 21 and get out that suntan lotion as the sun beams longer and longer.

I have a good friend who happens to be a close friend with Robert Redfield, the CDC Director at the height of the Covid introduction to our society. A few days ago, he told my friend that we should get used to this pandemic because there is no question in his mind that it will be with us for 5 to 6 years. So, instead of moaning, agitating over every bit of sensationalized national news, we just have to adjust to the fact that this is what we got. It will definitely ease anxiety if we just go about our lives as if this is it. Aside from newscast infections, my life really hasn’t changed at all where it really counts. Being flexible, being able to adjust has always been one of the better human attributes. In a society that will continue to change at increasingly faster rates, ease of adjustment should become second nature to us all. It is a good thing.

College basketball coaches should realize that their biggest foe right now is Covid knocking players off the courts for a game or too. And do something about it.

It seems that around here the Christmas song will be, I’m dreaming of a white flurry followed by rain.

The Question:

“The Guardian” Just published the list of the 50 best TV shows for 2021. What are the top Ten?

The Headlines:

--Markets Opens Higher After White House Announces Test Kit Distribution Plan; EV Stocks Hit Hard After Manchin Nixes BBB.

--WH Announces Availability 500 Million Free Home Covid Test Kits.

--Missionaries Escaped Form Haitian Captors Traveling At Night To Freedom.

--Actor Chris Noth Booted From “Sex The City After New Sex Harassment Charges Arise; SITC Cast Support Him.

I’m thinking missionary escape from Haitian captivity will become a very uplifting movie someday. What a group of caring, kind and courageous people they are. It is one of those real-life stories that actually reaches in and grasps warmly this old black contrarian heart.

The technocrats more and more will be developing assaults on good things nostalgic, asking that we all give up something we are quite contented with simply to join that new normal we probably can’t even fathom at the moment. Why? Because they can. Are people moaning about and clamoring for the opportunity to give up personal relationships for some kind of virtual nirvana. I don’t think so. But, from what I see and hear, it is likely to become a trend where millions will follow. Because that’s what people do. And even some older generations will find away just to at least fiddle around the edges. I am flexible and so are many who realize that change happens and you have to look at it realistically. But this idea feels a little like dehumanization of society. Yes the big techs will tout their ability to get you settled into the Metaverse, nothing more than a virtual society. Why I believe that even the non-old-and-crotchety like me might join me in this opinion – This a nice, even impressive technological achievement, but not for personal privacy and certainly not for warm cuddling relationships; feeling the touch of hands holding hands near a bubbling country stream without prying eyes or data scraping. I’ll pass.

Dad, are we pyromaniacs? Yes, we arson.

A good reader reminds us that people in England think they have Covid because their food has no flavor.

Today is National Short Woman Appreciation Day. Say what! I appreciate all women whatever package they tend to be.

Obviously, Chris Noth was taking his role in Sex in the City quite seriously.

30 years ago today the USSR official bit the dust. And in America today the implausible concept that was at the core of that oppressive regime seems to be gaining popularity with a highly vocal minority with little resistance from our intrepid fourth estate. I’m seeing a little bolshevism creeping into the main stream while too many Americans are worrying about whether or not there is too much caramel in their coffee.

I’m trying to organize a hide and seek tournament, but good players are really hard to find.

More and more Americans, conservative and liberal, are having less and less sympathy for the excuses of antivaxxers.

A good reader poses this hypothetical: What happens in an all-EV world when, say, the Governor of Florida facing an enormous hurricane mandates a mass evacuation from the southern part of the state. And at a point around Jacksonville when all must be recharging at once there is a sudden deadening of traffic, with no power even for maintaining A/C or radio or heat or recharging phones. Just packed solid roads of vehicles unable to move, and unable to easily recharge for a number of logistical reasons including the probable fact that the storm has wiped out power.  Tis a thought.

What do you say to comfort a friend who’s struggling with grammar? There, their, they’re.

The Answer:

Number two was the barely watchable, to me, White Lotus. The rest in order were Mare of Eastown, Succession, Squid Game, Feel Good, Time, Alma’s Not Normal, Starstruck and I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson. Going down the list further we have Stath Lets Flats, Uprising, The Underground Railroad, Ted Lasso, We Are Lady Parts, WandaVision, This Way Up, Back to Life, Line of Duty and number 20, Can’t Get You Out of My Head. Maid is 21, The Beatles: Get Back is #27. Lupin, which I liked a lot, was only number 45. Guess what? Number one won’t be revealed til tomorrow. I’ll let you know. What is your guess, “Lucy Ricardo”? I haven’t a clue.

This is revisiting classic puns week.

Though I always vow never to repeat,

These classics can’t be beat.

I got over my addiction to chocolate, marshmallows, and nuts. I won’t lie, it was a rocky road.
