For the Bird:
We
have heard the poets and politicians, dreamers and pragmatists,
humans all, expressing thoughts about the meanings of this special day that is
tomorrow. But, I kind of figure that in each of our hearts we know what it is
all about, why it is so important.
A
lot of parents are fine with letting their young children
go outside unattended doing what young kids have done for generations, explored
and had fun. Nope, they aren’t worried about their kids taking care of
themselves, they are worried about being reported to government agencies by
neighbors for being negligent parents. Now, that sucks.
I’m
thankful for being allowed to roam free when I was a mere
child.

If
you like being hip in the new world of gadgetry,
then hop into your driverless car and rush to your favorite gadget shop. No,
the top gadget of 2018 wasn’t a new iPhone. It was the Samsung Galaxy S9 Phone.
In fact, the iPhone didn’t make the to five. Tied for second are the Amazon
branded Fire TV Edition television (Alexa operated), the new edition of the Apple
Watch and Galaxy Note 9 (Larger edition of S9). #5 is the Google Home Hub. Tied
for six are two iPhones – the XS and XS Max. Show your stuff.

In
response to Monday’s item about elves killing reindeer for
early Christmas light ignition, a reader writes to say that they just put up a
new tree and tested the 700 bulbs…making reindeer an endangered species.
Yesterday,
I went into a convenience store to by diet coke. The normally lethargic looking
long-haired clerk was full of smiles, almost radiant. Without being prompted he
said, “I can hardly wait for tomorrow. It’s my favorite day of the year.” Thanksgiving
does that to people.
The
word of the Week: Spatchcock. This is a process
where the back bone and sternum of the turkey is removed so the bird lays flat in
a shallow pan for uniform cooking. In the process the skin is often lifted away
and then replaced after the meat is coated with a herb paste mixture of Butter,
salt, pepper, parsley, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, garlic and lemon zest. Tis is
the non-traditional bird that would be served with roasted Brussel Sprouts.
Notice
above that I capitalized the word Butter. Something just deserve
to be noticed.

NFL
pick-ums comes a day early this week. Another so-so 8-5 last
week brings us to 96-62-2 or 60%. T-day
turkey games are part of the big day, at least to men who enjoy napping in front
of the TV after the great meals. Of course, the Detroit Lions are always there
and tend to play very well. Tomorrow they go against Chicago. Chicago is
playing great. But, I’ll pick the upset here, Lions. Hey, it’s a tradition!
Dallas-DC sounds like a great game, but the Skins are depleted, especially
after Smith’s Theisman reminiscent gruesome leg injury. I don’t want to, but I have
to pick the resurgent Cowboys. The last Thursday game has this year’s amazing
Saints against a Falcons team that just has trouble winning. Hey talk about all
of the great QB’s of today -- Brady, Rogers, Roethlisberger, Rivers -- but
Brees is the MVP and also just happens to be the #2 all-time passing yardage leader.
The
tougher picks on Sunday will be Jags-Bills, Giants Eagles,
Browns-Bengals, Seahawks-Panthers, Dolphins-Colts, Pack-Vikes and
Titans-Texans. This year, the Bills are either surprisingly good or really bad.
The Jags lately have been more bad than good. Bills QB is back and they will win
at home. The NY-Philly game is always a war, and the Iggles need this one to stay
in the race. I have to pick last year’s champs. The battle of Ohio is another
good traditional war. The Bennies are fading and the Browns have shown a remarkable
stability this year. I’ll go with the away team from Lake Erie. Seattle and Carolina
are two mystery teams but both are still playing for something. I really don’t
know about these two who disappoint more than they satisfy. But, I’ll take the
home team Carolina. Tannehill is back for Miami and Luck is looking like all
world all of a sudden. I have to go with home team Colts. The Vikes are really stumbling.
But the Pack can be beaten. I’d like to pick the home team but Minn gives me no
confidence. I’m going with GB. Lastly, we have a really good game full of meaning
for the playoffs. Tennessee keeps on making noise just when you think they are
dead. But Houston has been getting it done and will again this week.
Of
the rest, I’m picking the Pats to wake up against a Jets team
that is sliding fast. Of the Pats lose, fire Belicheck. TB can be awful but the
49ers just don’t prove it week after week. TB. The Ravens need to win badly,
and Oakland can’t stop them. The Chargers are blessed this Sunday by inept Cardinals
as a foe. The Broncos can surprise, and they have the advantage of the thin
air. But, Roethlisberger is a winner.

There’s
an odd story emerging from New Jersey (Odd story from NJ? How
odd) about two mansions about 10 miles away from each other burning down yesterday.
What really makes it odd is that they were both owned by members of the Caneiro
family who were also partners in the tech company Square One – Brothers Keith
(CEO) and Paul (VP). And, both appear to be arson. Also, Keith was found outside
his mansion with non-self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound. His wife and two young
children were dead inside. Stay tuned on this one.
The
story above raises all kinds of conspiracy theories in this
frail mind, but it also maybe one of those stories that is never fulfilled in the
media. We may have to wait ten years until a Dateline or 48 Hours expose. Were
they in debt to the Saudis?

This
is the weekend the big rivalry college football games.
Yesterday we mentioned the feature, probably most meaningful game between Ohio
State and Michigan, But we also so get the instate rivals which are generally
good despite the rankings: Alabama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia
Tech and many more. You get the picture. Tradition comes alive on Thanksgiving
weekend. We also will see the longtime year end rival game between Notre Dame and
Southern Cal. This could be very important in the bowl rankings, if SoCal nips
the Irish. So, tis weekend, all for those guys running around all of the
channels in shoulder pads and tight knickers could be better than usual.
Especially after last week’s patsy exhibition game schedule. Ugh.
Do
the PC police let you use the word “nips” in the same
sentence with the word Irish

The
Answer:
The Pilgrims first landed in Provincetown, the town
that sits at the tip of Cape Cod. The 252 tall Pilgrims memorial pays tribute to
their landing in this now quaint, old, gentrified fishing community. They stayed
five weeks in Provincetown, exploring the inlets and coasts of Cape Cod for
possible permanent settlements. But, they were attacked by the Nauset tribe, and
decided to move on across Cape Cod Bay to Plymouth for safety. There, they were
welcomed and assisted by the Wampanoags.
