Today's Tids Issue 4,569
Some dreams are bigger than others:
Happy MLK Day everybody.
It seems to me that a lot of progress has been made, but you would never know
it reading the news. Divide supporters seem to be overwhelming those who are
seeing the fruition of hope, the satisfaction of accomplishment. I think more people
now, “from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire, from the mighty mountains of
New York, from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania, the snowcapped Rockies
of Colorado. Not only there but "from Stone Mountain in Georgia, Lookout Mountain
in Tennessee, from every hill and mole hill of Mississippi,” see, “all of God’s
Children being able to sing with meaning, ‘My Country tis of thee, sweet land
of liberty…”. I believe many, many more have climbed the mountains and are seeing what
Martin had seen. But I am not of those who have been persecuted, have endured a
suffocating past, and perhaps I don’t know. But that is what I have seen in 57
years.
Who knew
what time it was when the first clock was made?
I wonder how many kids
lose out on life because they think they are not smart, but it is mainly due to
physical deficiencies like hearing loss or known shortcomings like attention deficit
et. al.
I see where Trump has added
Alan Dershowitz of OJ trial fame to his legal team. I wonder -- If there is no
crime, he’s not doin’ time. If there is no mud on his Florsheim’s, there are no
crimes. If the evidence wilts there are
no guilts. It’s just not fair, ‘cause you hate his hair. You must be an acquitter
regardless of twitter. Oh well.
Boston Celtic and native
of Turkey, Enes Kanter said: “If you want to kill a terrorist you can use
weapons. If you want to kill terrorism, you need education.”
The Question:
England’s Captain Cook founded the “Sandwich Islands”
in the Pacific. What are they called today? Bonus: Who is Shelly Fabares?
Who is Nanette Fabray?

The Dems are throwing
a Hail Mary pass hoping that Mitt will tip the ball to about seventeen of his
friends.
Of all the people
I hear voters say they won’t vote for, Elizabeth Warren seems to top the list.
But the NYT’s endorses her. The old grey Lady has fallen off her walker.
Let’s face it,
there are many people who are offered opportunity but don’t see it.
How come
the word funeral begins with fun.
I think that
Prince William looks like he has the makings of becoming pretty great King. But
if he and Harry were running against each other for Prez in the USA, Harry would
win. If you get my drift.
It seems like there is,
or will be soon be a growing trend towards “Social” Capitalism. There is a consensus
among business associations looking at capitalism say that corporations should be
moving beyond serving mainly shareholders to serving all stake holders, which
also includes customers, suppliers and communities. A 56% majority of worldwide
citizens now question capitalism as it exists today. Two main factors contributing
to the decline in corporate trust -- advancing job-gobbling technology and the disparity
of income between workers and elites. Expect more CEO’s to be speaking of environment
responsibility, wage gaps and maybe the biggest of all, job retraining.
Switzerland, France,
Denmark, Malta and Sweden, according to the EPI, are considered the most
environmentally friendly countries. EPI is “Environmental Performance Index”
produced by the Yale and Columbia Universities in cooperation with the World Economic
forum. A main purpose of the index is to guide world travelers to “Green” destinations,
whether or not you would enjoy being there.
The US may do pretty well reducing CO2
emissions without government mandates, which are often strangulating in an effort
to meet artificial demands for political purposes. The US hit its peak in emissions
in 2005.and by 2017 (The latest CO2 data I can find) it was down about 14.5%.
Oddly, that decline coincides with the increased use of Natural gas. BTW, since
2005, China has gone way up in the same period from 6.3 million Metric tons of
CO2 to 10.9 Million metric tons. For sake of comparison, the EU (The center of the
Paris Accords) has gone form 4.25 Million Mt to 3.55 Mil Mt or -16.5%. The
bigger point is that every time the US has been faced with significant internal
problems it has recognized needs for improvement and made them, and they will again.
Without throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Or giving up our sovereignty to
foreign globalists.
How do you
get off a non-stop flight?
It wasn’t long after being
left out of the billionaire grandfather’s will that the family members hiered their
grievances.
I really spend a lot
of effort trying to eliminate all forms of agitation and grief from my life.
And then all of a sudden, I get a note from some security entity telling me I
might be on the dark web. Ouch. “Might be”!
National and state governments
spent billions in their effort to rid society of cigarettes. And now state houses
across the land are legalizing marijuana. Government hypocrisy at its finest. The
main reason, I suspect, is that without cigarette taxes, and now where most states
who received chunks of dough from the Ciggy settlement and spent it like drunken
sailors, they are looking for replacement revenue. And once again the are expecting
a bonanza from taxing human frailties. But there is a lot of new research
arising lately that says that perhaps “Non-Addictive” MJ is not so good for
kids and adults after all. That it reduces driving awareness for one thing, and
in the extreme, according to brand new study, researchers are saying that kids
smoking the weed at an early age can be affected for life. These are just off the
top examples, but I suspect that responsible lawmakers* will take a second look
at the dangers before ramming it through the Legislative process.
Of course,
some may legalize the cannabis so they can sue them in the future and get a Ciggy
style return for budgets going forward.
*Yes, there are a few.
From a January 1963
article in Popular Science (With How-To drawing): “Disposing of used engine oil
can be a problem. Solution: Dig a hole in the ground with a posthole digger and
fill it with fine gravel. Then pour in the oil. It will be absorbed into the
ground before your next change. Cover the spot with soil.” I wonder if they are
now doing research on climate change.
The policemen
crypt up on the gave robber and nabbed him. Shoot me.
The Answer:
The sandwich Islands of course became Hawaii, the 50th
State. Bonus: Shelly Fabares was the Daughter of Donna Reed On The DR
Show and was well known for her role as Christina Armstrong on coach – and her
number one hit song Johnny Angel. Nanette Fabray was the child of vaudevillians
who won three Emmy’s playing opposite Sid Caesar. She won a Tony and was
recognized as a super start on Broadway. She was also starred as the mother of
Christine Armstrong played by her niece Shelly Fabares. Yikes! I have to tell
you that I only picked the two because of the similarity in their names and
didn’t know the relationship until I typed the sentence above. Crazy how you
can learn something new at any given minute even when it is not relevant to the
history and future of the world. BTW, Nanette won the Eleanor Roosevelt
Humanitarian Award and The President’s Distinguished Service Award for her long-time
dedicated advocacy for the handicapper and in particular the Deaf of whom she
was one. And she overcame it.
Nanette had quite a life
on the stage beginning at 3 yo, and part of it was fighting against shortcomings
due to her hearing deficiencies. Originally her name was spelled Fabares, like
Shelly. But she changed it to the phonetic spelling after Ed Sullivan muffed the
pronunciation.
