How we look at it.

Today's Tids Issue 5,329

Drifting like a fallen leaf:

This morning Linus said, “Summers fly, winters walk.” Just in case you are interested.

You just know some politico will complain because DeSantis is getting too much airtime by doing his governor's job in the face of an emergency. Of course, when it is over the foes will accuse him of not doing enough or bungling this or that. People die, People's lives are ruined, but the politicians, after the TV camera is off, just walk around the bodies and past the ruins and move on to their own personal needs.

“A couple were pushing their twin babies along the sidewalk in a side-by-side pushchair. As they paused near the park gates, a matronly old lady stopped and bent down to admire the babies. “Awww!” she cooed. “Are they twins?” The couple looked at each other, exasperated at being asked the same question every time they went out. “No.” said the father. “They’re triplets but we leave the ugly one at home.”

The Question:

Who controls the news. Over a few short years, newspapers, TV Stations and radio stations have been bought, sold and dried up as traditional media fights for life against digital upstarts. What are the biggest media companies?

The Headlines:

--Markets Drift Early but Surge as Job Openings Number Declines; Also Awaiting New data on Consumer Confidence and Home Prices; Manufacturing Facing Headwinds as Labor Pool Dries Up.

--Best Buy Echoes Other Retailers Saying “Shoppers Having Trouble Paying Credit Card Bills”.

--US Announces Drugs Picked for Medicare Negotiated Lower Prices.

--802.5 Pound, 14.25 Feet Long Alligator Captured in Mississippi; Monster with 66 Inch Stomach Girth is World Record.

--Idalia Now Officially a Hurricane; Could Become a Three.

It appears that TV drugs are the targets for price reductions by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. I watch these commercials all of the time and I rarely understand what they are doing. Basically, what I see are aging models and actors finding a new source of income.

I hate it when strangers on Linked-In get mad at me for not accepting their invite to join their circle of acquaintances.

Continuing my mini rant of disbelief from yesterday, this morning we learn that a16 year old girl from Maryland stabbed her classmate to death in an argument over a sauce that came with a MacDonalds order. What is exactly behind the increasingly common execution of rage as a solution to anything. Guns, knives, autos, what is poisoning the minds of people.

Early voting here begins 20 days before the election date. Outrageous. A lot can happen in those twenty days. In this state for the big primary to potentially produce a replacement Congress Person, one lading candidate was forced to drop out after the revelation of certain distasteful items form a student/teacher relationship. People had already voted for him and now it is a vote wasted. I have seen other instances where lesser-known candidates emerge towards the normal end of a campaign only to find they can’t make up early voting differences. Incumbents and party bosses love mail vote gathering and early voting, and they are as big a threat ot democracy as anything

The big question in golf is, where will the LIV/PGA agreement be taking the sport next year.  You have to imagine that the LIV’ers despite all of their riches, would have loved to be playing under the FedEx series spotlight.

Speaking of Arabian big bucks, they have just bought the July 4 Tennis tournament played here in the Newport International Tennis Hall of Fame. They didn’t buy the HoF, just the rights to the traditional annual tourney which will now be moved somewhere else.

Mounting credit card debt with much higher interest rates is the weak underbelly of the US economy. Unlike the USA government, the average citizen just can’t pile on debt and laugh it off.

My new hobby seems to be eating too many potato chips for lunch. I don’t think it is a good one,

The Answer:

Number on is Comcast! It owns NBC and more. Next is Thomson T Reuters followed by Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount Global, Naspers, Fox Corp, News Corp, IACI, Nextar Media Group, and at #10, The NY Times Company. Other notables are Sinclair Broadcasting, Scripps, Gannett and Daily Journal Corporation.

I find that waking up to nondescript soft music is much better than hearing angry voices on TV or radio. Here’s one that is pleasant. Actually, soft music all day is a nice narcotic. Just drift off. Nothing will happen to you.
