Stan Modic: A perfect Friend.

Today's Tids Issue 2,339
Opening Stuff:

One of the great contributors to the Business Press and US Manufacturing in general passed away yesterday morning at 9:27 AM. His name was Stan Modic. Most Americans have surely never heard of him and the nightly news media probably won't do a piece about him. But they should. He was all about America's greatness, and the leading people in American manufacturing industries, from Ford to Fred's Machine Shop, read him religiously. He didn't take kindly to the stupid, the lazy and the self satisfied. Inefficiency, complacency and waste. He warned of China years before warning about China became chic. He urged technical and cultural change within companies so they could meet a changing future. He was a no nonsense editor who gained the profound trust of all his readers. He was a tough Editor-in-Chief, but those demands, high standards and inspiration drove each editor who worked for him to achieve their own greatness. And best of all, Stan was a good guy. A true friend. Even when he was scowling.

The government keeps on telling us there is no inflation. Yet people are throwing up at the checkout when seeing grocery bills, and many are getting to a point where they can't afford the gas to get to work. And to make matters worse, Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary in her White House garden is promoting organic veggies which are several times more expensive than regular produce. You can't have as a national domestic policy "Wish Upon a Star" and you certainly can't have a KumBaya foreign policy.

The Questions:
While the vast majority of Americans drive Fords, Chevy's, Carollas and F-150 pick-ups, they all have aspirations of someday owning the very best. In a new JD Powers survey, Americans picked what they view as the best. Name the top five.

Back To More Stuff:
In truth, everybody somewhere in their inner self understands the importance and value of advertising. Yet few dare to admit it.

One of the good readers of this daily hodge-podge had in his youth been a speech writer for the Senator and Presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey. He tells me that the Veep was a great guy, and probably would have been considered a moderate today even though he was described in the 40's and 50's as an "Anti-communist Liberal" and a "Leading Progressive.". In fact, when he became VP, his liberal followers felt let down by their trusty Happy Warrior who among other things had paved the way for Civil Rights more than any other man. In fact, humorist Tom Leher wrote a ditty, "Whatever happened to Hubert? Has anyone heard a thing? Once he shone on his own and now he sits at home and waits for the phone to ring. Once a fiery Liberal spirit, but now when he speaks he must clear it..." It was more a derision of the vacuum of the office rather than the character of the man.

Actually, when you think about the vacuous VP Office is perfect for Joe Biden.

I got several good tips from my mention of the "i before e" rule yesterday. One great reader gave us this list of exceptions to "i before e" which don't necessarily conform to "as in neighbor or weigh" addendum: Beige, Feint, Feisty, Foreign, Forfeit, Heifer, Height, Heir, Heist, Reign, Rein, Seismometer, Their, Vein.

No matter what you achieve in your lifetime, there comes that time when you will accomplish the most that a human can accomplish, a void in someone's lives.

The big scary statistic for the week seems to be a new discovery that says people who sit at there desk all day at work are more apt to have heart attacks. I can see it now. People suing not to sit at desks.

No wonder the celebs are so eager to support liberal causes giving away government money. So many of them "forget" to pay taxes. The latest are the Osbournes are the latest owing $1.7 Million in back taxes. No steak, no sweat.

There is no truth to the rumor that in order to increase the take on income taxes, Harry Reid is proposing a law that would ban tax accountants. Not true...although you have to believe that somebody like Maxine Waters may have thought of it.

Have you noticed how state legislatures are rushing to make laws that would enable easier access to marijuana. And that at the same time are creating intimidating dictates that would basically criminalize drinking a can of soda pop.

Almost Near: Chapter 15 continues.  --"Here's what I know." Monty then proceeded to tell Tucker about his interveiws with neighbors who said for the most part the Quimpierres seemed quite normal, like other families on the block. "But, many neighbors said that the children didn't look happy. In fact some of them said the kids at times appeared scared. And Martha, or whatever her name is, lost some of that upbeat enthusiasm she always had at the beginning of the marriage."
Tucker stopped writing and looked up. "Tell me about Rudy."
"Ah, now Rudy is an interesting player in this drama. If there is a drama?" He smiled a Tucker. "Rudy was a loner for the most part. He had a decent job in his father's salvage business. His father was a well known bastard, the kind of crusty geezer who scared kids and pit bulls equally. And I have the feeling he was hard on Rudy. But, it is Rudy's early teen years that are most revealing. While there aren't any records for that underage kid, I personally remember that he was the subject of school investigations into alleged sexual advances towards young girls in his class. More than one," Monty added as he clenched his teeth.
Tucker dropped the pencil on the desk front.

Probably the toughest little springtime chore is trying to scrape off the old Newport parking sticker to replace with new one.

For those who frequently eat out, keeping one's waistline and clogged arteries under control is a considerable challenge. But there are a few simple tips that may help. Most have to do with igredients and preparation. A Cobbs salad with mayonnaise dressing will kill, while a switch to a balsamic based dressing dramatically reduces bad stuff. Always looked for grilled meats and avoid fried. Go for a bowl of fruit instead of tiramisu. And then there's gravy. Hmmmm. Hey, eating out should be fun. Forget what I said.

The Answer:
Volkswagon topped the list of cars that Americans thing are the best! next was Audi followed Acura, BMW and Lexus. For your information, last year Porsche was the dream car.

The End:
Today, I'm going out to take some new pictures for my todaystids.blogspot.com site. The pictures up there now are of what maybe some of the most historic places in the US. And, they are all in Newport RI -- The first Quaker Meeting House, the home where the Great French General Rochambeau lived for two years prior to the successful surrender at Yorktown, the church the man himself George Washington worshiped on trips here and where Queen Elizabeth came to proclaim one of her Episcople favorites, the sun over the Newport Harbor that grew rich from the "Triangular Trade".

Stan Modic may have been the Godfather of this Tid's daily view of the world and the people in it. He was the ultimate curmudgeon, and I try to emulate him every day.

Believe in your heart.

Today's Tids Issue 2,140
Opening Stuff:

Let’s hear it for thoughtful people. You know the kind of people…nice people who decided to so something nice for another human being just because it is a nice thing to do. It could be a small gesture for a husband or wife, sister or brother, lover, friend or complete stranger. Something a thoughtful person knows he or she does for someone else who may not even see it but somehow senses their life is a little better in some way. Without question, unrewarded thoughtfulness is one of the finest of human traits. Oh, did I say unrewarded? A thoughtful person always has the greatest of rewards…the goodness in their hearts.

On the other hand we have Wall Street. The losing turn-around yesterday was ascribed to “Euro Jitters”. I’m thinking that euro jitters is just the latest excuse of the day for traders who, in the face of increasing skepticism by the general public, want to justify taking profits. Remember when the market was supposed to reflect an economy 6 months down the road?

Diet books are successful because they reach a wide audience.

The Question:
Name the four terms used to define the severity of a declining stock market. And what are the percent of decline represented by each? Bonus Question: The Tilapia has become ubiquitous in seafood counters everywhere. What exactly is a tilapia?

Back to More Stuff:

The energetic BoSox (Chrystal Bowersox) overwhelmed the retiring DeWyze during last night’s AI finale. I will say that week after week leading up to the final choice, Lee D was consistently solid. But in this observers eyes BoSox grew each week and during the final two shows when the rubber meets the road, she was the power. I would say also after watching last night’s extravaganza that the finals could easily have been Bosox and Casey…and even Siobhan who was strong and professional. DeWyze may have been the fifth best performer on that stage last night. It’s all about the demographics of the voters. Plain and simple. He’s looked at as a “Heartthrob”. Why? I have no idea.

“Hang on Sloopy” by The McCoys is still one of those songs that gets my juices aflowin’.

How come it takes a recession to get the roads fixed? I and all others have been paying taxes for our entire working lives and one of the things most think we should be getting is decent roads. It couldn’t be that the government officials are squandering our money? Nah!

I like to read those little columns entitled something like “On This Date in History”. I have noticed of late that many of the most exciting accomplishments occurred in 1937. Kudos to those born in that year.

Writing handwritten notes on the steering wheel while driving is much more dangerous than texting. I cringe at the many little acts of stupidity of my life time which today have been declared criminal acts.

I don’t think the majority of hard working Americans ask for much from their taxes. Good roads, garbage pick-up, police, fire and education. And on the national side defense and…and…and…jeez, I don’t know what else we need from the Feds.

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 74 continues. Just as I started to say Hi to our own smiling receptionist, Bill came around the corner. His eyes reflected the mood of the environment I felt as he elevator doors opened. Molly said “It is so nice to see you back here Mrs. Durham. I wish it was a happier day.”
“Why? What happened,” I started to ask. But, Bill interrupted and said let’s go to your office. I made a funny grimace at Molly and she actually smiled a little more cheerily.
Bill wasn’t so cheery. In fact Bill was not in the slightest like the boy I promoted two months ago. I placed my laptop next to the desk, looked around to see that everything seemed to be the way I left it. That was comforting. I always look for comfort just before the storm. I sat and spun my chair towards Bill who was now sitting to my left in front of the desk. “Well, it’s nice to see you too, Bill!” I said with syrupy sarcasm.
“Sorry, Boss,” He answered quickly but still somberly. “I’m a little nervous. The FBI showed up here this morning. You couldn’t have picked a worse day to ease your way back into work.” The phone rang. “That is probably Jack”, advised Bill. He watched me pick up the Phone.
FBI I thought as I placed the receiver to my ear. “Maggie, get down here.” Then dead air. “Oh, and welcome back.” Jack hung up.
I looked up quickly into Bill’s eyes. “So?”
“The FBI wants to talk to us about BiEmbryo. They have been with Jack most of the morning. I have a feeling Jack is dying in there and will throw everything your way as soon as you walk in.”
“He should!”. I stood up. “This isn’t going to be a walk down the Main street of Fosterville.” I smiled down at Bill. I think he enjoyed it.

The new Governor of New Jersey hit it on the nose when he told a complaining teacher that if the amount of salary wasn’t sufficient that maybe she should seek another career. And explained that the revenue to support government style jobs is finite. Do they still teach economics in High School?

Is the ragin’ Cajon Carvelle starting to beat the drum for his candidate Hillary for 2012? His blasting of Obama yesterday over the oil spill certainly looked like the first salvo against The Hill’s opponent. Then of course, he went on to beat unmercifully BP, which made it also appear that he was on the payroll of oil spill litigation lawyers.

The Answer: The four levels of a declining stock market are “Noise” (0-4.9%), “Pullback” (5-9.9%), Correction (10-19.9%) and Bear Market” (20%+). Bonus Q Answer: Tilapia is a fresh water, warm climate bottom feeder that grows fast and big and is ideal for aquaculture. Not only does this fish have the commercial advantage of reaching edible size quickly, its fast growth and relatively short life assures minimum amount of mercury in the system. This popular fish is also herbivorous assuring that there are plenty of edible delicacies for other fish and less algae and oxygen sucking plants that undermine pond or lake health. But, as most New England fisherman say, “It isn’t Seafood”.

End Tids:
The Celtics are making me really, really nervous.

Hey Arlen Spector…the American Idol job is open.

Get your hands off my money, or I’m calling Jack!

Today's Tids Isssue 2,137
Opening Stuff:
I’m at a loss for words. How can you possibly adequately express the grief over the loss of a friend? A friend that each year provided hope and relief. But, tonight I and many will have to face the truth. The horrible truth that “24” is to disappear form the face of the earth. The TV program that…I’m sorry…I may not be able to write the rest of these Tids. Whew. This is tough. Suck it up big guy. When the stock market dips, when democrats talk, when celebrities ooze, I could always say for the past nine years: “Don’t worry about the crap in the world, you’ve got “24” to look forward. That’s a true friend if there ever was one. Pass me a hanky please.

New celebrity couple of the moment: Fergie and Blago.

Nowhere in the list of ideas about saving Social Security (Mostly higher taxes and fewer benefits) does it recommend that no person affiliated with any congressional or executive branch of the monster can touch the “Trust” fund, except the person who pushes the button on the machine that prints the checks for those who paid into it. Or am I too late for that?

Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde always tugs at my heartstrings.

Refreshingly Honest Department:
In this world of arrogant journalistic scoundrels wasn’t it a pleasant whiff of seaside air to hear Campbell Brown say that she is resigning because not enough people were watching her program. She added that nothing makes her madder than the company lines like “Wanna spend time with the family” or “seeking new career objectives”. She said it would be impossible for her to stomach spinning her own reason for leaving. So, when she turns up somewhere else, I’ll be watching.

The Question:
Name your ten favorite all-time “24” Characters other than Jack and Chloe..

Back to More Stuff:
The almost good news is that next Fall NBC will première a new conspiracy thriller described as “Resembling 24”. It’s called “The Event”, and it is about a guy investigating the strange death of his wife who finds himself looking at a giant government cover-up. I’m putting this potential as a Tids fave on my “must give it a chance” list.

With all of the attention focused on Basketball, football or hot High School/College sport of the moment, unbelievable accomplished student athletes in minor sports often go over looked and underappreciated by the fawning public. Let’s hear it for all of those champions sweating and competing beyond the spotlight.

In case you are interested, the ratings for the 8:00 daily cable news slots (That’s where Campbell Brown resided) are Bill O’Reilly 3.3 Million, Obermann 1 Million, Nancy Grace 745K and Brown 575K.

So like I’m supposed to be really, really happy when I read that the return to volatility in the stock markets is good for the gam…, Oops, I mean traders. I have to believe that 99.6% of all stock market participants would love some stability more than anything.

I’m absolutely loving my Celtics!

I don’t know what to think about the successful production of a fully chemically based synthetic cell, but I can hear China and India officials talking now, “Oh great! Just what we need…another way to add to our overpopulation.”

Interestingly, Country Music sales is humming along, or at least remaining stable as the music industry in general is bucking some tough trends. The reason, say many observers, is because that while Wall Street magnets are pocketing the big bucks, most of the average Americans are still worried about jobs and shrinking assets. And, they “commiserate” with the woeful lyrics of country songs. Like “I got the Blankfein Big Bucks Blues” or “My Broker Took My Wife Ida And left me no IRA.”

We have given some ink to the 16 year old girls trying to sail alone around the world. But how about the 13 year old American, Jordan Romero, who successfully stepped atop Mount Everest on Friday. Can you say Best Selling Book? But, I still can’t understand one of the good luck charms he carried to the top – “Kangaroo Testicles”! Yikes!

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 73: “Gray Matter” came the lilting reply. What do they inject into these receptionists anyhow? Kent laughed to himself at his little joke as answered the face of the security company. “Hello, this is Kent Middleton for Jason Cotter.”
After a few seconds the pleasant voice of my friend Jason came on. “Why Kent. This is a surprise! I thought you were trying to stay away from me. Too bad about Bromsky.” God he liked to ramble. You’d think he’d know me by now. But he continued. “So, how are you and the sheriff getting along?” He paused a few beats. “ I still remember the meeting we had with him, and laugh at our performance.”
“Are you finished?”
“Oh yeah, you called me.”
“That’s why I’m calling. The sheriff.” Now I paused just make him understand that I was still in charge. “The sheriff is getting nosey. And I’m sensing that this isn’t dying out as fast as it should have.”
“So, what do you want us to do?”
“Well,” I started. “If you can figure out how to get a couple of guys to blend with the surroundings up here, with big black SUV’s, I want to keep an eye on Laura and Sarah Durham.” I paused, “And we might consider making them inaccessible to the police?”
Jason jumped in, “I think another accident for the Durham woman would look suspicious.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about,”. Kent then changed the subject. “Your BiEmbryo security contract is just about completed.

Last week I mentioned that the dumber and dumber in the RI State Legislature are proposing a tax on sugary soda pop. I misspoke. (Oops there’s that very political word again). It now appears that this is a sweeping national trend among all legislative slugs. Under the guise of helping obese people cope, they are really trying to figure out how to pay for Obama’s bloated LollaPelosi Health Care Program. If it keeps going this way, health care will be cheaper but you won’t be able to afford to eat! Get this, the common thinking is to charge a penny an ounce for sugared sports drinks, teas and soda pops. For a 12 pack of 12 oz soda cans that would come to an extra $1.44/pack. Now if you wait for sales, you can always stock up on 12-packs for about $2.50/pack. That makes this tax equal to a whopping 57.6% tax!!!!! EeeeeeeeeeeeeeeOW!

The common thinking among people with brains is to vote them all out in November. I think we need more. Vote to shut down Congress and state legislatures for ten years. Believe me, nothing bad would happen.

The Answer:
The first two that popped into my mind are the great villain Nina and the loveable Edgar. Of course there is Renee Walker and the fantastic President Logan. I liked Jack’s wife, Kim’s mom Teri Bauer. And how could you not love President Palmer. I always though Michelle Dressler was terrific. And I liked Tony. I can’t remember the names but the Middle Eastern family of 2-3 years ago were outstanding. I liked Jack’s second love Kate Warner, and her sister Marie was one another of the terrific villainesses of the series. But one of the better guys was the CTU head George Mason who was dying and gave himself up to explode an A-Bomb in the desert in one of the most emotional scenes ever. As I got into this I found it was hard to limit it to 10. I probably had over forty very favorite characters over the series. But, that’s just the way it is with fans…we’re brain dead.

The End of An Era:
I’m thinking that next year the Tids will create and bring to you Season Nine of “24”.

And, I’m also thinking that KFC biscuits and gravy are going to be a great eating-along-with-24 snack.

Experts are a dime a dozen.

Today's Tids Issue 2,129
Opening Stuff:

It is very unsettling to see that world economics seem to have more to do with problems of out of control, over socialized governments than whether or not business is winning or losing.

After a day of golf on a crystal clear but blustery 43 degree day, there is nothing better for warming the soul than piping hot rice with rich pork gravy.

Back to More Stuff:

Is technology taking over? Last week we had Klutz boy pushing the wrong button on stick trade and computerized programming taking away from humans control of most people’s wealth. And now we have a Zombie satellite – affectionately known among the nerd herd as Zombiesat. Well this former Galaxy 15 lost contact when a solar flare fried its brain. But, the brainless orbiter still operates at full power. Confounding scientists. And you know how dangerous that can be. We have seen the brainless in DC and Wall Street operate on full power and look what that’s gotten us.

I enjoyed listening to the singers last night on American Idol. The judges seemed to have some problems with song choices, but, frankly, I was generally entertained by all. Especially with the Lee/ BoSox duet and to a slightly lesser extent Big/Casey pairing. But, of course some were better than others. After all, this is a competition. I thought B0Sox was the best and I thought Lee was a close second, better than some of the judges thought. Casey was quietly pleasing and sang it well. I thought Big, although enjoyable, didn’t quite reach the promise of the song. Mike will probably go this time. Oh, Siobhan may have been the best this week it she was still there. But, that’s just me.

Question of the day: Are politicians just shallow dummies, or do they really want to destroy the country.

Gas prices could have been the political game changer come November if they had gone upwards of $5.00 as some experts were predicting as little as a month ago. But, the new estimates of “lower” gas prices could make the voting public feel relaxed coming out of a summer, going into campaign season. Everything about politics in reality is mood.

Some days Spell-Check is dumber than a politician.

Why do I have this feeling that the new Robin Hood movie will bear no resemblance to my youthful love of the resourceful thief, the merry men, Little John, Will Scarlet and Maid Marion?

The Biggest Panhandler Department:
As you may you by now, two brothers from RI won the big Million dollar prize for winning the Amazing Race TV competition. Each brother will receive $325,000. But Big Brother who did nothing will get $350,000, more than the two who busted their scrawny butts meeting and surpassing challenges beyond their own belief. But, unfortunately that appears to be real life these days -- The strivers are getting less and less.

One thing for sure…Congress in its typical grandstanding investigation of the oil spill will provide lots of information for the lawyers who will be bringing on the law suits.

Of course, the scariest thing going on in the world today is the fact that the geniuses still can’t figure out why the stock market dropped 1000 points in less than a half hour.

Have you noticed that in all areas -- sports, economics, politics – the popular phrase “experts say” has become totally unreliable?

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 71 continues. –“I’m far smarter than poor old Seymore, aren’t I Sally?” I felt Sarah/Maggie press her neck back into my thumb. I released the pressure and walked around to look into Sarah’s eyes. She looked reddish. A little unnerved.
“What I meant…” Sarah started but Sally drown her out blurting,
“Why of course you are, were…whatever.” I felt like the wicked stepmother in Snow White. Sarah the mirror reflecting my heart and Sally my brain. And me begging for approval. Have I become this shallow?
I put an end to the stammering. “Seymore was a brilliant guy. And I admired him even though I didn’t particularly like him. His ambition just got in his way and we became the fortunate recipients of his misdeed.” I scrunched Sarah’s shoulder in a natural gesture. She smiled up at me. The tension disappeared. Sally was glad the discussion was over. But I have to wonder where this conversation between them would have gone if I hadn’t walked in. Sarah, if you need any more technical insights you can stop in as you leave.” Her unseen foot ran up my calf. She smiled and said meekly Ok. No problems with Sarah I thought. I peered as far into her eyes as I could and she responded with that look I have come to love. It halted me for a moment. “Hope to see you later,” I said as I left. I looked up at the doorway and saw standing there, Sarah’s husband Paul. “Here for your weekly techno-meet?” I routinely asked. How long had he been there?
He just answered, “Yes I am”. Then he stepped aside. He looked as cold as me.

A reader commenting on Monday’s “24” and torture sequence said it was “hard to stomach…”!

Speaking of stomachs, did you hear about the personal trainer who told his client that she should exercise – restraint!

Kagan has many of the characteristics of an unabated liberal. Probably, even a chortler who plays well the “good ole’ boy” game to move forward. For instance, people like her who would ban army recruiting on campus certainly aren’t reasoned giants, but small minded emotional midgets. Yet this person who has also advised against banning late term abortions, does not consider gay marriage a right, is not morally against capital punishment and believes that terrorists have less rights. I don’t really know what or who she is. But even though she seems not to look at all issues through one ideological microscope, I have a feeling that this brainy NY-er does not represent the views as what I would like to see for America.

In another small political item, the former Mass state senate seat of Scott Brown went to a republican.

The Answer:
Tied for Tenth among males are McEnroe, Becker, Wilander and Edberg. 9. Jimmy Conners 8. Bill Tilden 7. Andre Agassi 6. Bjorn Borg 5. Ivan Lendl 4. Roy Emerson 3. Rod Laver 2. Pete Sampras and #1 is Roger Federer. There will be lots of arguments on a list like this – Budge is better than Sampras. How about Jack Kramer and Pancho Gonzales/ ken Rosewall? But lists are typically skewed in favor of the most current. Number 10 for the women is Justine Henin. 9. Evonne Goolagong (My personal favorite) 8. Serena Williams 7. Monica Selas 6. Billie jean King 5. Helen Wills Moody 4. Chris Evert 3. Margaret Smith Court 2. Steffi Graf and without question number ! Martina. I would have put in there Mo Connelly and Althea Gibson…and maybe Maria Bueno (19 Grand Slam titles!). Suzanne Langton?

"All you need is..."
So, all of this tennis talk reminds me that this is a great day for love! Enjoy.

Nausea at Ray's Creek.

Today's Tids Issue 2,104
Opening Stuff:

Remember when a Shrimp Cocktail was a premiere appetizer at any restaurant and often a highlight of special occasion dining? Now the little swimmers are ubiquitous accompaniments to all occasions large and small. “Oh no, not shrimp again!” They still taste great though. Actually I have my cocktail party sports jackets made with specially lined waterproof pockets. When you are tired of talking about the weather and health insurance plan options, reach in your pocket and offer a shrimp. You’ll be the hit of the do.

How many people across this great nation last night threw up on their living room carpets while watching the introduction of the new Tiger Woods self serving commercial featuring the voice of his dead father? The Woods rescue plan is as despicable as his total disregard for morality.

Back to More Stuff:

GM, 61% owned by taxpayers lost $4.3 Billion in the last half of 2009. That’s the period after it emerged from bankruptcy. But here is the real problem. They need to add a hefty $12.3 Billion to their pension fund by 2014. If they let their pension fund fail the pensions will be paid by the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation funded totally by you, me and Aunt Lizzie. It doesn’t appear that GM will out of bankruptcy for long. GM is just the tip of the iceberg in this country’s growing underfunded pension programs. For instance the 3 biggest California State pension funds are ½ Trillion dollars short. Taxes will go out of site to pay for California and plenty of other states. Can you say Greece?

Woods must have the same image rebuilders as 0-Man. All of the new photos are of a smiling Tiger! :o)

American Idol had a lot of drama last night. Big Mike sang for his supper and he sang with great emotion and heart…and talent. I think the judges like having him on the show anyhow. Next week two singers will go and nobody can be saved again. I’d like to see Tim and Andy go, which would leave a pretty good group of competitive singers. I rate the rest BoSox, Casey, Siobahn/Lee tie, Big Mike/Kate tie and Aaron. And, there are times like last week when the surprisingly big voice of Kate can move her towards the top.

The US during its greatest periods of economic growth, the eras that molded this country of the free into the giant of powers, dominated the world in the manufacture and sale of machine tools. Rhode Island became on of the richest States because of them. Machine tools are the basic instruments of a manufacturing economy. Machine tools are the basic instruments of the highly leveragability manufacturing economy. The US is still the third largest consumer of these tools, but has declined significantly on a per capita basis. China has soared in consumption and was 6x that of the US last year. On the production side, the US is now down from its top spot to seventh behind China, Germany, Japan, Italy, South Korea and Taiwan; And just a nose above Switzerland.

A new IRS report says that half of the US households don’t pay any taxes. Does that mean that fifty percent of Americans take care of the other half. And obviously not the better half. Also noted is that 10% of earners pay 73% of taxes. So, why is Obama looking to expand income redistribution programs?

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 65. Laura just left for Worcester where she waits on tables in a small restaurant in an old mill. As usual she left me in a blissful state of pure satisfaction. We agreed that she should avoid coming here for a while. I suspect that this investigation into the Bromsky affair is just beginning I would hate to have to sentence her to joining her uncle. Maybe I can find a few hours with Maggie/Sarah later today.
The new data is producing some amazing results and speeding our progress. Isabelle loves me. I am a most intriguing person for just being a socially awkward scientist. I smiled to myself. I picked up my phone and called Henry. “Hi my friend,” I said. He informed me that my partner in crime, Sarah had just left. Actually he invited me to join him for a minute or two. He said he’d like to bounce a few things off my “brainy” head. Then he did the folksy chuckle. He was a man to watch.
While driving over I called Sarah who agreed readily that she would love to have a diet coke with me. She added that she was feeling stronger today. And I could tell she was smiling when she said it. I loved to watch her vacate her morals.

According to the new Forbes Survey, The Ya, Ya, Ya…(WYKWIM)…the NY hedgefunders are the most valuable baseball team with a net worth of about $1.8 Billion. The Beloveds are second at $830 Million. The rest are the Mets, LA Dodgers, Cubs, Phillies, Angels, Cards and White Sox.

And, I think shrimp taste better with a little mayo in the red cocktail sauce. Incredibly tangy. And, also for better taste, you’ll achieve delectable consistency and satisfying bite appeal when cooking raw frozen shrimp as opposed to thawing previously cooked frozen shrimp. That’s just one man‘s opinion. And of course you have to learn how to time the cooking perfectly.

The Answer:
For the first time, the venerable American Idol which has been skunking just about everybody for years by super wide margins, lost the battle of Tuesday night to Dancing With the Stars 23 to 21.8 million. An observer says it is because of a good celebrity dancer lineup and mentions Kate Gossilin and Pamela Anderson! Kate Gossilin? Pamela Anderson? These are stars?
Maybe it is the absence of the ditsy Paula. But, more likely it was the poor to fair performances of the singers on the first live AI shows. Remember the Tids pointed out the failure of Seacre Remember when a Shrimp Cocktail at restaurant was a premiere appetizer at any restaurant? Now the little swimmers are ubiquitous accompaniments to all occasions large and small. OIh no, not shrimp again! That still taste great though.
st to mention voting totals. They must have really declined.

The End:

Reading about the demise of America day after day makes me despondent. But then I think of all the great people still out there working hard, and loving sincerely, and I say…maybe we can still do anything we want.

Beef drippings for peace.

Today's Tids Issue 2,102
Opening Stuff:

Occasionally you read of a new product that could literally change the world. Let’s face it, some of this new technology stuff is simply tweaks of old stuff with more apps than you could ever use. But this new product discovered today by the Executive Food Editor of the Tids at the Christmas Tree Store is such a powerful idea that it could bring peace to the Middle East, bi-partisanship in 0-Man’s heart. It’s called “Better than gravy”! Imagine that! Better than gravy. Kind of rolls off your tongue doesn’t it.

To keep my last night’s two hour 24 high going, I’m prepping my nerves for what should be a very tense and exciting UConn-Stanford Women’s Championship game tonight. This has the potential of being one of the all time greatest upsets. I’m think Pats/Giants in the Superbowl surprise. The big question, are the UConn women more dominant than Brady and crew.

The Question:
Today is the 63rd birthday of John Ratzenberger. Name the rest of the original cast on “Cheers”.

A dark horse should no be taken lightly.

There is no truth to the rumor that Phil Mickelson has hired a female flasher to run by Tiger Woods as he tees up Thursday morning.

A new report shows how creeping Taxation will stifle initiative. It isn’t just isn’t because of taxes, it’s the infringement on give-away programs that is the big retardant. For instance, as wages grow, parents with college age kids will lose advantages in aid opportunities, sapping net income growth. Forbes magazine has completed a report that details many instances where the tax code will make earning $30K can be more rewarding than $60K or that a promotion from $60k to $120K will net as little as $10K extra for the added workload and responsibility. It isn’t exactly income redistribution, but it works that way.

24-um: Was that a fast two hours last night or what? The sad thing is that we are in the wind down mode of one of my favorite all time programs. Let’s see, they have the bomb; The president is dead. And Dana, who turned out to be a pretty good villainess, is in the can. Is Russia the next villain? And there are only ten hours left to great a tense scenario and bring an end to all of the characters I have watched since Day 1 Hour 1. When, I first saw that intro of the morphing “24” the great split screens and heard those Kthunk, Kthunk, Kthunks. Every other program I have ever seen drags when compared to 24. Maybe it is time to start slowing down my heart. It’s like another retirement. I’m thinking that next year I’ll write an hour of 24 in each Tids.

Through The Same Eyes: Chapter 64. --“Hi, It’s Henry”.
“Oh, hi Henry. Hearing your rough country tones is Always a delightful way to start my day.” I could see his face turning red through the phone.
“Why don’t you come down here?” he asked after a pause and in a kind of mysterious tone.
“Am I under arrest?” He laughed.
“No. No, I have a several of the teens in here, along with their parents and a lawyer or two. I need your mind to help me interpret what they are saying. Can you be here in ten minutes or so?” He then told me that he thought this could go somewhere, and that it wouldn’t take long.
“You kids be good,” I yelled. “Remember I’ll be with the Police Chief and he knows how to look for evidence!” They laughed. I closed the door and within three minutes I was walking into Henry’s office.
Henry introduced me to Richie and Jen and then to two of the kidnapped kids Barbara and Murph. I just sat and listened. Henry appeared most interested in Murph, the alleged leader of the group and boyfriend of Bromsky’s niece Laura.. Richie seemed pretty bright in a teen sort of way. They started talking about the vandalizing night when the first two were taken. “So, how do you think those lights went out?” Henry asked. I always thought that was a pretty critical event in this entire mess. It just so far outside the realm of teen thinking.
“I have no idea,” Murph grunted. “This plan was Laura’s idea,” he quickly added trying to shift the guilt to the woman who wasn’t here.
“When did you find out that Laura was the niece of Bromsky,” I asked first.

Did some anti-soda person dream up the new caps on my Diet Coke and Pepsi? These little twisters hurt my fingers and make looking forward to a cool drink a journey in angst instead. I have seen it on several different kinds of drinks. One day you’re happy, the next someone changes the course of your life.

Oldsters may not know how to work an iPhone, but they are the wisest on social issues so says some new research. The study says old people from all kinds of demographic backgrounds have unique ability to draw upon wisdom based on experience. And the regular folks without a string of degrees are just as able as those with Phds. Listen to your Grandparents.

It looks like he latest White House repair job on their boss is to turn him into some kind of lovable smiling jokester. As I have always said, beware of left wing comedians.

Haiti could be a great test for the effectiveness of the moribund UN. They have proven over the years that they are pretty much inept. Haiti is pressing need of security first just keep those ravaged people secure in a civilized society. It’s small and UN troops should be to easily accomplish that objective. Unfortunately they have had too many meetings that go nowhere. Just do it. While we are on Haiti, the prospects there are not good. There are plenty of good charitable groups in the country, but no leadership. There is tons of dough flowing inward, but it is probably being siphoned off into Swiss accounts as we speak.

The Answer:
The show started in 1982 and featured Ted Danson as Sam Malone, Shelley Long as Diane Chambers, Rhea Pearlman as Nicholas Colastano as Coach, George Wendt as Norm Peterson, and of course Ratzenberger as Cliff Clavin. The rest who came later were Kelsey Grammer, the awful Woody Harrelson, Beb Neuworth, Kristie Alley, Tom Skerrit, Jackie Swanson, Roger Rees and Reid Shelton. Another my favorites, and love d the Rhea-Shelley conflict best along with Norm and Cliff.

A Small Finish:

I don’t believe Butler will be the last of the small college teams to make noise in the NCAA.
