Today's Tids Issue 3,093
Opening Stuff:
The Volvo Around-the-World
boats are
and will be coming to port here after practice runs across the Atlantic. The
first boat in was the SCA from Sweden, with an 11 person, all-woman crew, by God.
I walked down to the shipyard yesterday
morn after Tids time and was awestruck at, at first at the smallish size of the
SCA. My mind raced out upon the briny waters, visualizing the deep pink and
white boat, a technological wonder, crashing through the violent green seas of
the southern hemisphere oceans. But that’s not all. Many new boats were in. The
sleek silver Hugo Boss racing machine had a bow so thin and sharp I could have shaved.
The Oliver Hazard Perry, a new Tall Ship for Rhode Island was out of the water
being fitted for sea, where it will be used to train RI HS sailors the old fashioned
way, beating the seas in a rigorous journey to achieve rightful seamanship
credentials. The place was amazing with a lot of great sailing beasts. I took a
bunch of pics and put them on The Tids site. In fact you can finish reading the
Tids there, and enjoy some visuals too.
Maybe I should just send you the link every day when
the Tids are up there. It might force me to change pics more often.
There
is nothing so sad as a molded mind.
Oldie but Goodie, Department:
Old
Fred was in the hospital in a bad way, so they called his preacher. The
preacher came and Fred seemed to smile a little broader. Shortly though, he frantically
waved to the preacher for a pen and paper, upon which he feebly wrote a message.
Just as he handed it to the preacher, Old Fred died. A few days later the preacher
was at the head of the church extolling the virtues of old Fred, when he remembered
the note in his pocket which he had never read. He reached in whale explaining
the circumsatnces to the congregation. He pulled out the paper, unfolded it and
read, “Please step to your left. You’re standing on my oxygen tube.”
The Question:
Name five super tech titans who made it big while
still under30.

The next big movie about
Wall Street
could be “Flash Boys” based on the book by the same name by Michael Lewis about
high frequency trading.
Without question, the most controversial potential
movie for the future might be about that Abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. Money is being raised and in
fact has just set a record for “Crowd Funding”. Ironically, this time it is the
liberals who may go to court to ban a movie!
Don Sterling criticizing
Magic
Johnson for immoral behavior is like the pot calling the kettle black. Hey…I
can’t say that!
The list of things you can’t say just keeps on
growing. I suspect that it won’t be long before sportscasters are banned from
saying “It isn’t over until the Fat Lady sings”. The world is going Looooooony!
Say that with a vibrato!
Speaking of excellent woman
sailors,
the East Greenwich RI ladies HS ream was just nipped by tabor Academy for the New
England HS Sailing Championships held off Barnstable, Cape Cod. Dartmouth was a distant third. Congrats.
Why do Ohio State U
graduates
hang their diplomas from their rear view mirrors? So they can use handicapped
parking.*
One reason why Government
policies
drives you crazy is because they are so inflexible and are often misused to preempt
having to make tough decisions. In Nigeria the main problem is finding and
freeing hundreds of girls, and bringing down a barbarian. But, because Nigeria
has violated some human rights thing we are not allowed by our laws to help
with military action. But, the problem isn’t Nigeria, it is truly humane in its
essence; it should not be tied to the country at all. Find the children. Bring
them home. It’s not about Nigeria, it’s
about beautiful young people in harm’s way.
The Press watching campus
protests
give the students way more credit for intelligence that they really don’t possess.
There are so many conflicting signs on the
economic front, that my fleeting finger are being tied into knots on this keyboard.
I think one of the sane ways to get back to sensibility is to only reward performing
stocks and penalize the laggards. Carrying along losers with ri=sing tide clogs
the safe harbors of rational decisions.
Sorry I spent so much time on boats today. Remember when
you could go to the candy store and load up on penny candy. And your eyes flashed
from bin to bin as your stomach ached for sweet goodies. Well, yesterday my
eyes were aglow at these marine marvels as I went from slip to slip.
The Answer:
There
are fifteen and I start with Bill Hewett and David Packard. Next are a couple
of Steve’s, Jobs with Wozniak. Bill Gates and Paul Allen did it up in Seattle.
Then we have Michael Dell, Heidi Roizen (Early T-Maker Software later
incorporated into Apple), Sandy Lerner (Cisco founder - along with hubby Len
Bozack who was over 30), Marc Andresson (Netscape) and Pierre Omidyar (eBay).
Then we have Jerry Yang and David Filo who’s efforts turned into Yahoo! What
would a top techs list like this be without Google and the founders Larry Page
and Sergey Brin. And then there is the latest, MarK Zuckerberg.
*This joke originally included U of Michigan, but
I changed it to protect my readers. And bed=sides, my Borther-in-Law went to
The OSU.
The wind pushes me across seven seas
Since
my love would not let me be.
Yet
as I feel the stark loneliness grow
Tis
only home I would want to go.
So
I sing my mariner’s song.
Tomorrow my mind will be back upon dry land.
