Today's Tids Issue 3,416
Opening Stuff:
I
worked in a calendar factory, but my days were
numbered! Happy Labor Day everybody! Or should a holiday be called “no-labor”
day. Actually, I hear that most industrial states are raising Chinese flags
this labor day. Or as a guy named Bob Orben once said, “Every day I wake up and
read Forbes list of the richest people. If I’m not on it, I go to work.”
Are
your ready for opening day on Capitol Hill as the eager
Congress people return from Summer vacation. The first big issue is providing
spending to keep the Government going. I don’t expect a shutdown attempt as
they need to keep voter’s minds favorable to the 16 Repub candidates. On the
other hand the conservative wing may concede on the shut down, but not on
defunding Planned Parenthood. That will be a battle which should begin shortly,
before the solons slow down for Christmas shopping. Highway construction and
transportation funding will also top the debate scene on the floors. You can
expect this Iran Deal to be another major fight and Congress will vote, I
believe, to stop it. Again, the
arguments against the flimsy agreement will provide fodder for Repubs against Dems
on the trail. Interesting here is that many Dems will join in that chorus
against the deal Iran loves as they need votes at home too. That’s what you’ll
be hearing before they dive into their Halloween costumes. They’ll be lots of
shouts and misinformation, but that’s about what will happen. It’s all about
getting a foothold for the 2016 elections.
“Stripped
Down” Audi R8 V10 $186,000 (Huh?), Department:
It seems that more and more people are amassing
more and more money that they have trouble spending, and more and more people
are mired in despicable poverty. In the Middle East, hoards of good,
intelligent and decent people are being displaced by immoral and unconscionable
murdering thugs. Center Orchestra Seat, Broadway Show “Hamilton” -- $700: In
Hungary, families of earnest peoples, refugees from inhumane terror can’t get a
seat on a train. They could buy a month’s groceries for $700, if they can find
a country that will allow them to lie down and rest. Since the beginning of
time, life has gone merrily along for many while many more only see despair.
But centuries and years ago we may not have known or felt the angst. Today we do
know; we know just about everything in a twinkling of an eye. We see the misery,
the hopelessness. It’s not going to get better. Euro countries are opening the
borders, but now will those with nothing live? There is no need for governemtn
to take from the rich, the rich should feel it in their hearts. What are we
going to do about it?
Boys
and girls have had dreams -- I want to get rich
so I can get a Rolex watch or a private box in a baseball stadium. How bad
would it be to say, I want to get rich so I can help a fellow person in need.
The
Question:
Labor
Day Double: 1. Who are considered the ten most despised
Sports team Owners? 2. Name the
Countries with nuclear Bomb capability.

I
like Projo columnist Mark Patinkin’s comparison of Roger Goodell
and Inspector Javert of Les Miz -- two guys fanatically obsessed with getting a
good man for a minor misdemeanor. Two irrationally crazed men of power walking
on the edge of sanity. At least the Inspector could sing…and was probably a
sympathetic character.
As
Cleveland pro teams continue to falter with near
misses or general all around lackluster seasons, the good people in that fair
city on the lake will be turning their eyes towards John Carroll U which opened
its football season with a nice 26-3 victory over St. Vincent.
So,
did you hear about the hardworking union guy who before he
died said to his friend Eli, “Eli, when I die, cremate me and sedan my ashes to
the IRS with a note that says, “Now you have everything.”
You
have to ask the question, why are so many people fearful
of religion? After all, religion promotes harmony, love, caring for the
disadvantaged and good will,, and provides an orderly world though the common
sense guidelines in the Ten Commandments – like not killing each other or
stealing neighbor’s property, or lying and cheating. The anti religious people
must be really trying to rationalize away an awful lot of guilt.
To
me, Labor day will always mean the day I run out of
gas cooking a meal for a family gathering.
No
matter what progress has been made in the movement of the
refugees, the problem is but in its infancy. Today’s it is terror and despots.
Tomorrow it will be pressure on food stocks and water.
The
AAA Says that 36 Million people traveled over 50
miles for a Labor Day get-away this past weekend. I think they were all in
Newport.
The
larger gay Community and supporters seem concerned that
the continued badgering and demeaning of Kim Davis will turn her into a
rallying point for many who don’t like the way popular culture at large is
dismissing out of hand the opinions of the majority.
Regardless
of which side you are on in the Davis arrest due to religious
beliefs, this is a tough legal case from a technical point of view.
Times
they are achanging…Back?, Department:
Speaking of the current USA culture, Millennials
took a survey among themselves and the results say they don’t really like who
they are or what they stand for. In fact many would prefer being attached to
the Gen-X’ers instead of group they themselves define the latest era identifier
as self-centered, greedy and wasteful. Who knows, maybe the next generation
will be Known as the “Come-Back Kids” and they will save America from itself.
BTW,
several subscribers took issue with my negative assessment of the inveterate,
myopic New Yorker, Howard Stern on AGT. They think he is the only honest judge
and a good picker of talent for entertainment value. I still don’t agree, even
as much as I love my readers and respect their misguided opinions. I worked
with a lot of editors who taught me how to be an incorrigible curmudgeon.
Can
you imagine anything more demeaning to the prestige of the
USA than a Kanye West presidency with all of the Kardashians and their various
hangers-on piling into the Lincoln bedroom. What mess.
The
Parking Lot: Chapter 13 continues…
Nancy looked
at he floor wondering how she would reply to this man she didn’t know at all,
but who had perhaps saved her life, and maybe held the information she needed. She
could welcome him to her side, but would he become a burden to her ability to do
what she could do so well. She raised her head and looked at him, as if judging
him for the first time. He wasn’t just the guy getting whacked in the parking
lot anymore. His eyes were imploring. His body was probably old and tired, but
it looked better than she probably imagined. He always seemed to have a smile
on his face, and that she could use more than ever.
Her
eyes widened and she softened her look. His head tilted forward. “It’s about
land and what I know about the ownership.” She paused for effect but Jared’s glance
was steady and waiting. “You probably heard about the casino people trying to
take away some of the beautiful lands of this town for lights and cars. I went
to the early twon council meetings and asked some questions. I was never belligerent
because I wanted to see what they had, and crazy adversaries generally don’t get
cooperation.” He leaned back, in that I’m completely open to whatever you have
to say slouch. Somehow his movements made her smile.
“I started
going down to town hall and nosing around about the land the casino people said
they were buying. I would talk to the clerks down there, most of whom I have
known for most of life. They told me what they knew, but one , Frank Hopguard
seemed evasive.” She stood up like the energy in her story had made her restless.
She turned and looked out the window, because this is the part where she don’t
want any intruding ears. I know everything because my family lived the truth.”
The
Answer:
1.
Number One on the most despised Sports Team Owner List is Robert Irsay. He was good for the Denver
Broncos because when Baltimore drafted John Elway, he refused to go there to
play for the man. (Note, Irsay son has kept the sleaze going). Number 2 is
Wayne Huizenga and then we have Don Sterling, Marge Schott, George
Steinbrenner, Walter O’Malley (Moving the Beloved Brooklyn Dodgers to LA), Clay
Bennett, Walter Pocklington, Dan Snyder and James Dolan. I think all my friends
in Cleveland would take issue with a list that did not have on it Art Modell.
He would be Number One in the beautiful city with amazing people by Lake Erie. 2. Russia Leads the way with 8,000
warheads. US is #2 with 7,300. Then we have France (300), China (250), UK
(225), Pakistan (100-125), India (90-110), Israel (80), North Korea (6-8) and
Iran (?). Stay tuned.
If
there was no management and company ownership there would
be no labor day.
I
was pretty much self employed for the best part of
my life, and rarely had labor disputes. I could always talk myself out of hard
work.
