Today's Tids Issue

For Reason:
I
opened my morning email to this: “Never buy flowers from a
monk. Only you can prevent florist friars.” Tids readers are lovable.
TV
shows are better when the bad guys always seem to be a
step ahead of the good guys. No-way-out is the best formula for tension and
viewer attention.
The
NFL is touting the fact that this weekend will be the first
time since 2012 when four teams will start rookie QB’s – Cleveland’s Mayfield,
Jets’ Darnold, Bills’ Allen and Cardinals’ Rosen. To put that into perspective,
in 2012 the four rooks were Colts’ Luck, Skins RGIII, Browns Richardson and
Vikes’ Kalil. So, how did that work out for those rookies? Have you see
Richardson or Kalil lately? Or for that matter, highly touted RGIII? Only Luck is still starting and he after a
year off due to injury is not looking like that sure-fire Hall of famer. Beware
of over hyping.
The
Question:
A new poll has ranked the best living actresses over
80. Rank them?

I
barely stirred watching the second opening night of The
Voice. There were plenty of Huzzahs, but I didn’t join in. The best of the
night were Michael Lee and probably DeAndre Nico, who got a four chair turn,
but I don’t know why. Clair DeJean was a nice country singer and I kind of
liked Keith Paluso. I went to the kitchen when sleep inducing Franc West
started singing.
Wiping
out mosquitos sounds like aery good idea. And, scientists
they say are well on their way to finding how to do it. But, is wiping out a
segment of natural interactions ever a good idea? Just because humans can do
something, should they?
Just
in case you are interested, a new clip featuring Joe Biden has
him saying with regard to a Repub call for an FBI investigation on the Anita
Hill/Clarence Thomas matter: “The next person who refers to an FBI report as
being worth anything, obviously doesn’t understand anything.” The then Chair of
the Senate Judiciary committee continued: The FBI explicitly does not, in this
case, or any other case, reach a conclusion, period. Period.”
The
wife
of a hippie is a Mississippi. Can you still tell bad jokes with women in them?
In
yesterday’s Tids I bemoaned over my consternation about
how long I can continue to wear shorts, But as usual a good and thoughtful
reader came to the rescue, this time reminding me that the Scots wear kilts!
I’ll have to buy new underwear.
Tuesday
was a big premier night with the return of NCIS, Lethal Weapon
and This is Us among a couple of others plus highly promoted newbies FBI and
New Amsterdam. The This is Us crowd loved once again their favorite program and
I and old time NCIS lovers was happy to see old friends once again on the
screen in a better than average opener. Personally, I was not enticed to watch
either FBI or New Amsterdam based on the preseason promotion. New Amsterdam
looked just a little too precious for me, but a little over 60 % gave it high
marks. Audience reaction was pretty much the same for FBI (Which I have recorded
for the future).
Of
course, the biggest premier for this week occurs tomorrow
at 10:00 AM when the Kav alleger takes the stand to back up her memory with real
information, and the nominee is forced to prove a negative. Fortunately, I’ll
be on the golf course for these histrionics.
And
while we are on “Must See TV”, the Ryder cup begins a 2:00
AM Friday Morning, Yes you heard that right -- 2 O’Clock in the really early
morning, from Paris.
A
painter’s masterpiece is his claim to frame.
If
you don’t think the media is biased all you have to do is
watch or read the way the press and electronic news report on Kavanaugh. In our
local big state paper, they put the good judge’s story on the same page as their
massive report on Cosby sentencing. Are they counting on mindless readers seeing
guilt by inference? Even on local TV News, a minor story about a man caught
hiding in the bushes neath a women’s window was used as the lead into their
report on Kavanaugh with the words “Sexual Predator Caught”. A large percentage
of media are people who would have voted against the Judge regardless of any spurious
information.
And
last night on CNN, a supposed journalist host just sat
there behind his official desk stone-faced, allowing a lawyer, an obvious
Kavanaugh hater, babble on without questioning about how he is just like Cosby
with absolutely no facts except inuendo to back it up. Did I say A Salem Witch Trial
on Monday? I think I did.
But,
we’ll see, won’t we?
A
song
about a tortilla was more of a wrap.
The new NFL Power Rankings Are In. The bottom five
are the Arizona Cardinals, San Fran Niners, Houston Texans, Oakland Raider and
New York Jets. The richest team in sports The Cowboys are #26, below the
Browns! Some how the fairly hapless Patriots managed to sneak in to #8,
probably by reputation. The top five are #1 KC Chiefs followed by LA Rams,
Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and last year’s champs, the Philadelphia
Eagles. Hmmm. The Steelers have looked marginal and Green Bay so far, average.
What does that say about the rest of the league?
The
Answer:
Julie Andrews comes out on top. Next in order are
Maggie Smith, Betty White, Judi Dench, Carol Burnett, Angela Lansbury, Sophia
Loren, Shirley MacLaine, Doris Day and #10, Ellen Burstyn. The oldest living
actress at 101 years and ranked #12 is Olivia de Havilland. Just ahead of Olivia at 11 is Bridget Bardot,
while Cloris Leachman, Gena Rowlands and Barbara Eden follow at 13, 14 and 15.
The rest of the top 20 are Rita Moreno, Joanne Woodward, Cicely Tyson, Shirley
Jones and Eva Marie Saint (Definitely, one of my first boyhood loves). Bridget
Bardot -- an actress?
Well,
tomorrow I get to pick the NFL games and whether or not
Kavanaugh gets the nod. I’d rather pick NFL games.
There’s
a chill in the air.
Which I would hope,
Was winter’s cold, creeping in.
But no, alas, it is just us.
Not accepting the good
Only looking for, hints of sin.
