Today's Tids Issue 4,469
Running to daylight:
How about
James Norman Mattis for Presentment?
In case you missed it,
the Hong Kong protest is all about democracy, freedom and liberty. While the original
protest was against an abusive extradition law, it appears that millions of regular
citizens felt the power of the group and joined the young protestors as they saw
potential for becoming a unified sovereign governmental entity again. In the end,
the resolve of people will always be for freedom, not restriction and being
controlled.
Things are ok in climate world. Dem
Presidential candidate Marianne Williamson says using “the power of the mind” could
change hurricane Dorian’s course.” I think she’s onto something. If the human
race stood outside each morning once a week, and looked up to the sun, with god
sunglasses of course, we could control global warming with anthropological
energy. The human thermostat theory of atmospheric
relativity.

“There is nothing better
than getting shot at and missed. It’s really great.” --Jim Mattis
The Question:
Yesterday I ended the Tids with the song Angel in the
Morning by Juice Newton (Which btw, several of yooz said they enjoyed). What singer
had the original version? Did she or he have any other hits? Bonus: What
is interesting about the guy who wrote that song – Chip Taylor?

Let’s get to it – It’s Pickin’ time!
The old Tids sports minds have been a little sluggish the past two years, hovering
around 65%. So let’s hope for a big rejuvenation. The first week looks fairly predictable,
except for one thing -- it is the first week. Who knows which team will play out
of their mind to impress the new coach or girlfriend or Mom. Tonight is one
that is always a mystery – the rivals – the Pack and da Bears. I liked the bears
last year, and they seem to be strong again. I got to take them at home.
Now to Sunday.
It seems everybody has their eyes on the Cleveland Browns. It has become the
most quoted team in the preseason build-up. Are they overrated already after
god last year, and with good QB? I don’t know, but I’m picking Tennessee. I like
their coach. I believe the Rams/Carolina game will be tougher than it may appear
on paper, But I still go Rams. New Orleans is certainly out to prove something,
but so is Houston, I see this as a war, with NO winning. A traditional power game
of the NFC East is Dallas and the Giants, Ezekiel finally signed yesterday. I
still think the Jints are work in progress. Dallas to win at home. Another NFC
East traditional war is Philly, and I’m calling it a toss-up, with Philly
lasting out. A tradeable AFC war between two teams that don’t like each other
is Pitt and New England, the two teams with 6 Super Bowl wins. This is a no-love
lost tussle and the Steelers are mad. But they are always mad. I’m going with
my beloveds. It will be close.
The Rest:
The above are the better games at least in the minds of predictors like me. Two
also-rans, Buffalo and the New York Jets are trying to become competitive in a division
dominated by the Pats, They have both made good moves, but the Jets have been
better. I’m picking the Jets but rooting for the Bills. Minn and Atlanta could eb
tight but I’m going with the Vikes. I like San Fran over Tampa Bay ( As long as
the SF Mayor doesn’t ban winning), Chargers over the Colts (Though I’m rooting for
Brissette), Baltimore over Miami, Seattle Over Cinncy and Detroit over Arizona.
I think Oakland and Denver will play it close because nobody knows which team
has what, if anything. I take Oakland. Lastly, we have Kansas City and Jax. KC
has a dynamic QB and there is no reason to believe he will have a slump year.
But, Jax, believe or not is favored by some to sneak into the top of the top of
the AFC South competition now with Indy minus Luck. But, gotta pick KC so, there
you a have it.
Maybe Marianne Williamson
is electable after all. Who would have ever expected Lululemon becoming a hot
stock, But it appears more people like to meditate and hum than we ever imagined.
On the other hand:
“Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (In American Democracy) and
kill everyone of them until they are sick of the killing that they leave you
alone” –Jim Mattis
Investors are getting restless about
no-profit app-based stocks like Uber and Lyft. There is no
question that their concept increases the availability for people to easily
find rides over waiting for taxis, but the company still has to deal with the
same old corporate problem – employees wanting good pay.
Andrew Yang may be the Dem
who could beat Trump, that is, if he can gain traction within his own party.
So, did you hear about the guy
who somehow managed to get his Smart car in his kitchen so it wouldn’t be blown
away by Dorian. What Americans won’t do for their cars.
In case you missed it,
Kellogg’s is entering the fake meat business with a brand called “Incogmeato”. Yikesarama! I’m thinking that somewhere along the way
meat producers will be asking for more protections for generic names of meat
products, so at least consumers will know what they are not getting.
There’s some concern that increasing American
population of double income no kids’ millennials will eventually
be a bad for the state of the nation and its economy. We used to import workers
and now we’ll have to import consumers.
The Answer:
Merrilee Rush had a big hit with the song, and a Grammy
nomination for “Vocalist of the Year” in 1968. She released a succession of
fair tunes but no more mega hits. She lives in her Grandfather’s Barn in the
Seattle area and and she and her husband singer/songwriter Billy Mac breed Old English
Sheepdogs. Which have no relationship to Old English furniture polish. OMG, did
just say Polish? Will I be banned in Krakow? Bonus: I went ot High
School with Chip who was then known as John Wesley Voight, brother of Jon
Voight. He wanted to be a professional golfer, and he and Jon were stars of the
Archbishop Stepinac HS Golf team. Their and oldest brother Barry, a friend of mine,
became a geologist, a rock star of another sort.
Mattis also said yesterday
in an interview: “We Need to get back to fundamental friendliness, respecting each
other, accepting that I may disagree 100 per cent with you, but you may also be
right… We have to get away from these tribes that bring out bad comments about
each other.” “Americans have to stop being hard on each other.”
