“The future ain’t what it used to be.” –Yogi Berra

Today's Tids Issue 4,471
Loving nostalgia, but...

Oop’s, I have nothing to say
This week’s opening day.
No political screams
No conspiracy schemes.
About Dems who are red,
Or Prez tweets I dread.
My mind’s just meandering
Avoiding ugly slandering
Today I’m humanizing.
Instead of demonizing.
Yay! A good day,
With nothing to say

A national advice columnist received a letter from a woman who feels trapped…in a future world sorta way. The woman works at home, in a very “smart” home. And, her husband can control everything from his phone in his office miles away. He tracks her energy consumption and alters lights and even opens and closes the skylight. He sees everything that goes in and out of doors. And one day he texted her that she shouldn’t be running the clothes dryer “during certain peak hours”, and then he turned off the dryer. And some say the future is going to be just dandy. Gadzooks. Privacy is one of the two or three most important aspects of comfortable living. Right? Then why do I bare my soul to all of your in this daily mess of typos? Because I’m just another insufferable human being.

I’m going to try to be more sufferable.

Of course, the specific problem above is the personality defects of a controlling spouse. Which just says that all of this new whiz-bang technology in the wrong hands will be debilitating. Like telling the government and corporations everything about yourself.

In those days when most people thought that God was always watching, more of the population seemed to try to do the right thing. Now that big brotherism appears to be creeping in, people are becoming really scared about doing anything, including walking down the street and smiling at the wrong person.

The Question:
What is the difference between Utopian and Dystopian?

Do you know what is scary? The idea that an airplane mechanic can sabotage an airliner. Thant’s what’s scary.

Curiosity killed the computer. As in, “I-wonder-what-that-friendly-appearing email- from-someone-I-don’t-know is all about?”

Get this: Clemson, the number 1 college football team in the country beat Texas A&M on Saturday 24-10. And it wasn’t that close. Football analysts are saying that A&M was the only tough game on Clemson’s schedule. So, that means TV will be showing bad #1 team games for the rest of the season. Something is wrong in Collegeville.

As a working stiff I would plan my business trips based on what movies were in theaters. If I were still plugging along today, I doubt if I could find enough good movies playing to get me out of the office to make a living.

I’m pretty certain that in the future more people will be severely injured by some cybermugger than by some petty thug coming out of an alley.

The real key to the election for Repubs is that Trump needs a lot more votes than his truly loyal base and must find a way to stop Repubs jumping upon that fence of uncertainty. Obscuring problems with rhetoric only serves to hinder solutions.

People a lot more knowledgeable than I are saying total the real cause of the pain killer overdose death epidemic is illegal fentanyl, not FDA approved opiates.

I suspect that very few Americans have any clue about what really goes on in professional college football.

I always believed that words couldn’t hurt you until my wife threw a dictionary at my head.

How to create a successful socialist country? You hire lots of advertising and Public Relations people to convince the populace that they love being harnessed – unable to choose what they enjoy eating, how they play and in what they live.

If I was a citizen of Narragansett RI, I would be asking questions about exactly what is going on about their Town Council’s secretive, no-bid sale of the building voted to be the new Library by 68% of the public.

One thing you can probably count on in the future -- you will be paying more for everything. Hotels only charge extravagantly for mini-bar items to help you get used to it. I don’t know much, but I know I don’t like what I read between the lines.

I don’t like the idea of defining people by their politics.

Back when I first became enamored with classical music from listening to the various themes on the Lone Ranger radio program, I read critics who were saying that Tchaikovsky wasn’t that great because he was too loud. But I have to tell you, I just listened to his first symphony, and I think it is as good as any by any master. Old Tchai wrote some amazingly beautiful themes. But, what do I now, I’m just a guy with ears.

“What Orwell failed to predict was that we’d buy the cameras ourselves…and the biggest fear would be that nobody was watching.”

The Answer:
Utopian describes a society that is conceived to be perfect. Dystopian is the 180-degree opposite, describing an imagined society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible. Like 1984” or a spouse that can control everything you can do with a smart phone. How smart is that.

Several knowledgeable International Observers say the Hong Kong protestors are walking upon that fine edge between staying vocal and back off a bit. The world may forget at times as China appears to love the fruits of capitalism, that they are still a controlling communist country. And they don’t like embarrassment from freedom believing citizens. When they are pushed too far they become irritable, react,,. and it has never been pretty. You don’t have to imagine a dehumanizing society when you have countries like China and other ultimate socialist states. So some are advising Hong Kong people to back off, but not opt quit.

There’s no future in living in the past.

Woody Allen wanted to know why our days are numbered instead of lettered.
