Bring back arithmetic.

Today's Tids Issue 5,470

Numbers or Dreams:

The spring is when a young man's fancy turns to love, they say. Why not say I, watching the buds begin to pop. Why not remember the sensations of walking on clouds, of giving and caring when the world becomes colorful once more. Why not let hearts flow and feelings feel when being in love is such a wonderful thing to be. A little like the rebirth of a lovely spring. You are always young when love is in the air.

I have a friend. He keeps trying to convince me he’s a compulsive liar, but I don’t believe him.

I heard a woman yesterday saying, “What ls another $10,000 to federal government when it makes people's lives better”. What's wrong is that free money from deficit spending is probably the biggest contributor to inflation that makes people nominally poorer creating the misguided need for more government spending.

The Question:

What are considered the top Ten Irish movies of all time.

The Headlines:

--Markets Seem Directionless, though Up; WS Analysts Cooling on Tesla as Growth Stock.

-- Judge Throws Out Six Charges, 3 Against Trump in Georgia Election Fraud Case

--House Passes Bill that Could Ban Tik Tok of Chinese Owner Doesn’t Sell App.

--Struggling Dollar Tree’s “Family Dollar” to Close Nearly 1,000 Stores.

--Number of People Identifying as LGBTQ has Doubled since 2012; 7.5% Now Versus 5.6% in 2020, 3.5% in 2012.

The meanings of numbers are illusive to so many people. This idea of people being millionaires is one of the biggest political fallacies we have. There are people who may look like and be classified millionaires because of self-funded pensions and houses with high valuations. But the millionaires among us are also government retired employees with defined benefit pension plans. For example, a teacher with $43K /year annual pension is worth $1.3 Million to generate that for a lifetime. A policeman with a $67K pension is worth $2,514,796. Yet the cry coming from politicians is let the millionaires pay for it. BTW, Congressional pensions and benefits make them near Billionaires.

Why can't Hedgehogs just learn to share.

I see where local schools are asking for funding to teach Civics. Why isn't that just solved by rearranging priorities of subjects already in the budget. Why does everything that looks like it should be normal seem to need special funding these days.

Last night after primaries Biden and Trump became the official candidates for the two big partes. Yay.

Party. Don’t you wish the two groups representing the interests of people with differing opinions were called something more serious than just “Party”. A lot of people do stupid things at parties.

This morning, I read that the Rhode Island Foundation issued $89 Million in grants to over 2,500 organizations, the most in the organization's History. The RI Foundation is a huge 100-year-old charitable institution funded by Indvidual's, Families, Organizations and Corporations.  It does good work for all peoples across many disciplines. But I had to laugh this morning at the headlines about the largest expenditure in history – it is now run by a former US Congressman. Doin’ what comes naturally. Can they print money now.

I had breakfast this morning with good friends. We solved all the world's problems. Don't you feel better now?

This Hump Day begins the countdown to our big Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Time to look for my green clothing. After several recent Covid restricted and cold rainy SP parades, this should be a big one. With more glassy-eyed people roaming than ever.

The Answer:

Of course, being an old guy, I immediately thought of John Wayne and Marueen O’Sullivan in The Quiet Man. It is #18 Number one is The Irish Pub. The rest in order are Darby O’Gill and the Little People, The General, Philomena, Odd Man Out (Another oldie from 1947), Belfast, The Crying Game, Michael Collins, The Secret of Kells, The Banshees of Inisherin, Once, Waking Ned Devine, Brooklyn, In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot, N Bloody Sunday, Hunger, The Quiet Man, The Commandments and The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

Happy Green binging this weekend!

Here’s a nice soft way to start thinking of Saint Paddy's Day. After all, it is about the Irish heart.
