A CrackerJacks Day

Today's Tids Issue 3.37
Opening Stuff:

If you like whoopin’-it-up crowds and good old down country livin’-it-up, then hop the next plane to to Nashville and don’t stop at Go. It’s the big 4 day country fest and it is expected that 80,000 will be stompin’ and singin’ and dancing in the aisles as every big star of that Grand ole Opry and more give it their all. My ace reporter down there says last night was amazing. Three more big days and nights and they can pour her back onto the plane. Nothing better

Pic – Snoopy hugging Charlie Brown. Caption: “I like the kind of hugs where you can physically feel the sadness leaving your body.”

One of those rampant Cleveland Cavalier’s fans writes to tell me that after last night’s loss they are thinking of changing the name to Cadaverliers!

I think most of these police confrontations are simply explained by Newton’s Third Law of Physics.

The Question:
What was the name of the girl who  on this day in 1942 received for her 13th Birthday a diary? Bonus: what are the Iconic CrackerJack Prizes, The prizes that define the crunchy, Peanutty snack?

The Volvo around the world race produced a couple of unlikely winners in the leg just completed from Lisbon to Lorient France. The all Women’s boat SCA won and it may not be so surprising as the boat has been consistently fast out of the box, and in this shorter race managed to hang on. Vestas Wind is a pleasant surprise because this is the boat that was forced out of the race after a serious unplanned meeting with a reef in the Indian Ocean. So there are smiles all around, I would expect, even from the leaders in this very competitive race. All of these sailors are enduring the extreme danger and long nights and days, and they all always applaud the winner. They know what it takes.

A faithful, insightful reader who just hates typos sends this advice: “Beware of a world run by adults who were never spanked as kids, and got trophies just for participating.”

If  Americans were watching the going’s on during this current discussion and manipulation surrounding the Obama TPA (Trade Package) I suspect that God might put a giant fence around the country and call it a Nut House. Because, people would be talking to themselves, or jumping off bridges wondering how the country could survive with such convoluted gyrations. This is sausage at it’s best. Or is that wurst.

Did I say wurst? Shoot me.

Scene a Dannemora, Department:
Guards: “Joyce, what are you lugging in under your coat?” Joyce Mitchell: “A jack hammer.” Guard: “A jack hammer for the tailor shop?” Joyce: “Heavy Starch.” Guard: “Oh yeah, I see.”. Thanks.

The Republicans are passing the Obama signature trade package to give him the legacy he craves?

Is the world crumbling?

Did you read that the Head of The NAACP in Spokane Washington lied, saying she was black when the family is highly Caucasian, with perhaps a miniscule tinge of Native American. Her mother says that as a kid she tried to look like her adopted black siblings. The woman, Rachel Dolezal (Czech, German, Swedish) has been suspected of rigging anti black hate instances to gain sympathy for her causes.  That’s last thing the black community needs -- delusional leaders. Oh well, now that her NAACP career is doomed, she could go on to be a Journalist.

Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes just informed me that driving instructions to my house are available. I already know how to get to my house. “You might be a winner.”

I was driving on Route 128 yesterday around 2:30 and the traffic was stop and go for 20 miles or so. Rt. 128 is the circumferential road around Boston, and I’m thinking, “They want to have th Olympics here!

Actually, it would be a circumferential road if the ocean didn’t get in the way. Just in case somebody was thinking of catching me on that one.

Reading Between the Lines Movie reviews:
--I have generally enjoyed the predictable Jurassic park movies. So I might check out the new one opening today. Considering it’s a story told several times now, it is still feels pretty new, It will go well with popcorn, and if you like this kind of movie, you’ll enjoy this one. I’m going.
--Me, Earl and the Dying Girl is a beautifully written and well told story ofn awkward HS senior who his mom tells to talk to a girl he hasn’t talked to since Kindergarten, and she has cancer. What more can I say. It is probably the best film of the week.

Can the stock market hang on another month until mid-July when the profit reports will provide the excuse for a correction that is building up steam as we speak?

The Answer:
Today in 1942 was Anne Frank’s birthday. Bonus: Cracker Jack was introduced at the Chicago World’s fair. “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” was written in 1905 and gave a huge boost to the tasty toffee coated Popcorn and peanuts. It wasn’t a coincidence that the first prizes in 1912 were Baseball cards. In the 20’s Rings in plastic or metal was the favored prize. (Even today, couples ask for nostalgic CJ engagement rings) One of the most sought after prizes was the first injection  molded piece, The Sea aptain, which just hapoened to look a little too much like Joseph Stalin. It was pulled, and is now very collectable. The “Wiffenpoof” found its way into the box in the 50’s and while not as well known, it was felt it exemplified the whimsical sprit of the snack…and company. In 1960-70’s era small pinball machines were very popular. Other popular prizes are plastic figurines, booklets, stickers, temporary tattoos, and decoder rings. Decoder rings would be my favorite.

Today’s Tids was no prize.

Have a great weekend, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!
