Today's Tids Issue 3,353
Opening Stuff:
I feel the melodies
opening my mind. Loosing barriers of every kind, freeing up thoughts stifled.
Clearing visions often trifled, There is just so much to feel, Let the music
make it real, my eyes see life as grand art, absorbed to keep and fill my
heart. Let the music play. Let the thoughts be free. Who says poetry has to
rhyme.
I thank God that
I was never tempted to open a Twitter account.
All nostalgia isn’t
what it is cracked up to be. I remember this past weekend 50 years ago when
Herman’s Hermits were introduced for the first time to America on The Ed
Sullivan show singing “Henry the VIII I Am”. It was the dumbest thing I had
ever seen.
We saw a couple of great
and powerful champions this weekend, American Pharoah of course dominating the
field to win the Triple Crown. And the incredible jockey with the gigantic
smile and childlike enthusiasm, Victor Espinoza, who got him across that line
so proudly. Then there was the
magnificent Serena Williams, who just seems to get better every year, if that
is possible; this time not only downing a foe but beating back a flu like adversary
on her way to her 20th Grand slam. Williams has had her “moments’,
but there is no denying her championship courage and talent.
There was another
great champion in action yesterday, this time standing alone on the first
tee at Jack Nicklaus Tournament; a
solitary figure hitting the ball, then striding out on to the green fairway by
himself, the ultimate also-ran, this, perhaps, the greatest golfer of all time.
But yesterday, he was just playing out the string, the lowest score in the
field, the bottom rung. The outsider. Just going through the motions to get it
over with. Life changes, no matter how good you are. It’s just a matter of reaching down and readapting. Finding your
place in new worlds
The Question:
Where was the YMCA first established? Bonus: Serena Williams now at 20 Grand Slam wins is still behind
two other great woman players. Who are they and how many iwns do they have?

News Flash: A new
entry, “Cheese-it Crunchos” are looking like the latest sleeper in the high
stakes race to be chosen best in the Puffed Cheese Snack Derby. Just on the
scene, this new entry has the Tids Gourmet Kitchen Test Center (TGKTC) frantic
as they savor this new treat. The cheese is particularly distinguished and there
is a nice crunchiness the lays somewhere between the puffy and crunchy Cheetos.
I’m not saying they have overtaken Utz Cheese balls, but they are making taste
buds burst. Stay tuned.
So American Pharoah
won the big one at a downtrodden Belmont race track that could only afford an
old Sinatra record singing rather new song, New York, New York. What’s
happening to tradition? In Kentucky they sing the great “My old Kentucky Home”
with local bands and performers. At the Preakness it is the same as people
across the state on varying years come to sing Maryland, My Maryland. In NYC
they used to have bands that played “East side West side,…” which was popular throughout
the big metropolis in the 1880’s, through the the time of the opening of the 1902
Track. Why wouldn’t they want that good old tune to refeclt the diversity of
the people of the city? They could have, for instance, The Harlem Children’s
Choir singing along with the Hedge Fund Managers Dixieland Band. Think of the
possibilities. Think of bringing back real tradition. A recording. How gauche
.
Isn’t it interesting
how both sides of opposing groups in these endless national discussions on
varied topics like global warming or cops shooting minorities always are able
to find new statistics that support their position while refuting that of the
opposition? In addition, I listen to NPR and then to Fox, and always amazed at
the diverse interpretations and incredulous distortions of the same
information.
This is what I think,
and no god dammed facts are going to getinthe way.
I’m hearing that the
Biographical movie about Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Love & Mercy, is a
pretty good one. Will probably bring back some memories associated with the carefree
music. And some sadness, too.
I just noticed that
our state legislature just spent an inordinate amount of time passing a law
that seals the records of those who plead Nolo or Guilty I deals. Most of the
people who do that are state legislators! I also see that the State legislators
are urging leniency for the former speaker of the House Gordon Fox who should
be getting 33 years for betraying the trust of the people among other significant
crimes. They, the legislatures promoting leniency, say, “Embarrassment is
enough of a punishment. RI’ers are saying that these criminals need an example set.
The embarrassment is that we all have to endure the laughter and reidcule as
the USA spotlight is turned on the sins of our elutriate.
I was looking at some
of the older women in the stands at the Belmont stakes yesterday, and it was
obvious that bright colors make age recede into the background. I particularly noticed
the great Horsewoman (Secretariat owner) Penny Chenery 94, wearing a bright
blue suit with an array of colorful spring flowers and looking sparkling. Just
an observation from the Tids fashion police.
On a similar note,
I was told that the fashion travesty of the weekend was the outfit worn by Stanislas
Wawrinka the guy who upsets Novak Djokovic at the French Open. The observers who
told me they fear that his new found popularity may induce others to dress as poorly
as he,. Beware of celebrity trends,.
People are so
enamored with Trader Joes that they go there to by Frozen Fish, passing by
many fresh off the boat locations in this “Ocean State”. Just shows you how you
can mesmerize the folks.
A lot of the stuff
that is making today’s billionaires is basically organizing through
software and smart phones, activities and services that have been going one for
eons.
The Answer:
The YMCA was funded in London in 1844. Bonus: Serena is
great but she still needs a little work to catch Steffie Graf (22) and Margaret
Court Smith (24). My grandmother’s name was Margaret Smith, but I never saw her
with a tennis racket. Wooden spoon, yes, Racket no.
Every day that a new
GOP Candidate is announced is another day when the effort against Hillary
is diluted. BTW, the news seeping out is that big Repub financial backers in
Florida are becoming disenchanted with Jeb due to his lack of movement upward in
the polls. Their eyes are shifting towards Rubio, and national moneymen are
joining in. It’s crazy.
Have a great week
everybody.
Fifty years ago at
Camp Drum in upstate NY I first heard this song, and the nation has been
enjoying it every since:
