Today's Tids Issue 3,461
Opening Stuff:
Ottorino
Respighi has written or orchestrated so much wonderful
music it is hard to pick a favorite. But, somehow, I never get tired of his
Suite #2 of Ancient Airs and Dances, and in particular “Campanae Parisienses” –
aria, and “Bergamasca”, #3 and #4 movements.
Today,
Hansel And Gretel would just be using the GPS system on
their phones.
I
wish the media would start shining a spotlight
on out of control students in classrooms instead of using every phone video of
attempts at security control as a means to discredit law enforcement – a
growing trend that essentially enables bad or often savage behavior. Kids used
to respect authority, but now they have no second thoughts about punching it
out. Teachers are fearful in many too many situations, and principles succumb
to political correctness. Kids enjoying media support see attacking police as
badges of honor instead of symbols of teen irresponsibility, uncivilized or
criminal behavior.

One
of the great institutions in America is Cranston RI USA!.
Here a place that far more than city. It is Urban, suburban, exurban and rural.
It is filled with neighborhoods that would be the envy of any small town
America. It has seaports and coves, rising hills and fertile fields. Every
enclave has ma and pa shops, family businesses that have prospered to iconic
status that are the envy of people. It covers the demographic spectrum. People are
proud of where they are and what they do, no matter what they do. (Well maybe
no the citizens of the State prison system). You see the pride in the faces of
people you meet. Servers seem a little eager to serve you better. The city is a
wonderment, yet this place with the best restaurants, best shopping center is
too often the buried behind the glitz of the shore towns. Cranston could be a
self sufficient country. The Republic of Cranston is alive and well.
When
you look around seeing a bleak future for the American
worker midst increasing technologically based efficiency, just remember that
people create and manufacture robots.
While
you weren’t looking, Major League Baseball went out and
had some the best ever world series TV ratings ever. Typically, Eastern sports
“experts” had predicted that nobody would watch because of Midwest connection.
Some people find it hard to believe that in the middle of NFL season, there are
still rabid baseball fans who love the game. It’s really quite humorous to
listen to mindless sports experts opine on the radio about the demise of
America’s pastime. Somehow they fail to see the beauty of incredibly talented
athletes hitting, pitching and making miracle plays in the field; moments that
are still about as thrilling as it gets in sports. Some people go from trend to
trend, and some people believe and stay true. 102 days until Pitchers and
Cathcers report to Fort Meyers florida.
A
local Ivy League University is under assault by Unions who
want to organize teachers assistants. The USA Prez, who says he is serious
about bringing down the high cost of college, should talk to his Union friends.
Oh, wait a minute, he’s not serious about bringing down costs, he serious about
the government paying for college. That’ll keep costs down. If this keeps up
we’ll have a new boondoggle plan called ObamaEd.
This
NCAA Football playoff system is silly. Last weeks’ AP Poll
had the top ten as Ohio State, Baylor, Clemson, LSU, TCU, Mich State, Alabama,
Notre Dame, Stanford and Iowa. The “Select” Final Four Committee came out for
the first time with a Top four that Clemson #! Followed by LSU, Ohio State and
Alabama. ND jumped up to 5th and Baylor fell to 6. Looking at that
it seems that schools are weighed more their ability to bring fans rather
serving to be there. Last night Alabama looked terrific, and LSU far from being
a top 4 team. TCU and Mich State also dropped out of contention with losses.
So, who goes in – ND, Baylor or perhaps Stanford? Tis eclectic committee will
come up with something, and It may not have anything to do with who’s playing
the best football. (Note the new AP Top 25 has the top 4 as Clemson, Ohio
State, Alabama and Baylor. Oklahoma State and ND are 5 and 6. And, what about
9-0 Iowa? Will be interesting to see what the playoff expert committee comes up
with))
The
Ben Carson discussion is getting weirder and weirder.
US
Custom and Border Protection officials have concluded that
their agents should not have to wear body cameras. There were several
superfluous reasons given with the main one being they may not be able to
perform their job properly (Knowing that many a lawyer will be watching with designs to make money suing in behalf of
“Illegal” entrants to the US.) Makes sense to me.
We
went to a Jewish delicatessen touted in a major
story as a piece of New York. Apparently, a lot of Rhode Islanders read that
story because the place was swamped, and it became apparent they weren’t ready
for people. As one woman said while we stood patiently for way too long waiting
for a mere sandwich, “I could have cooked Thanksgiving Dinner by now!”. As it turned
out, the sandwich was pretty tasty, but not what I envisioned as New York. You
know that I kill New York as being overpriced and oversold and not worth the aggravation
of going there. But, real delicatessens outside that city are a lost art.
Beware
of too much good publicity, because you may not
be able to live up to the promise.
A
reader writes to tell us that kids today have it
easy. When he was young he says that he had to walk 9 feet through heavy shag
carpet to change the TV channel.
Tail
Wagging the Dog, Department
There was a poll in the local newspaper asking whether
or not The Middletown Town Council should have authority over school teacher
contracts. 71.6% said yes. The no voters were probably mainly Public Employees
and teachers who don’t seem to realize that the school committee and town
council are just arms of, and representatives of the taxpayers, the people who
foot the bills. The people are always in charge in case you haven’t read the
constitution lately.
Apparently
a lot of I’m-smarter-than-you Academics don’t get America
either. A rather well organized and sizable group of the exalted are banding together
to claim that the RICO Act should be used to suppress USA scientists who question
climate change. One of the believers in taking action to use this Racketeer
Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act is the illusionistic Senator from RI
Sheldon Whitehouse. Yes a US Senator believes in government suppression of free
speech. Scared yet?
The
Parking Lot: Chapter 25 Continues…
Nancy
looked at Jared’s rifle and suggested he put it behind them to reduce
possibility of glare off the barrel. Jared looked at her with that gaze of
admiration and amazement that was becoming the norm for him. He had never met a
woman like Nancy. Ever. But, this was no time for musing, which was exactly
what his tense body was telling him.
Nancy
motioned with her hand for him to stay, while she got lower and squirmed closer
to the scene. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, but he should.
A door
slammed and then another. He could see reflections of the cars which glittered
trough the bushes, but not much more. Nancy had managed to move 10 feet off to
his left, and he was sure she could hear and see part of what was going on.
The voices
rose, and it was mainly Fred pleading, “I came to talk to the woman here just
as you guys asked. It looks like she is gone, but maybe we should look inside.
The other two just were staring, intimidating the local man who was now very
scared.
Jared
thought he heard footsteps on the wooden porch of the house, Then a loud crash
that sounded like a door jam cracking under pressure. 10 seconds later Jared
was rocked off his feet by a loud Boom!, And then by screams. He picked himself
up and saw smoke billowing up from there the house was. He moved forward for a
look, now with smoke masking the area. He saw the feint outlines of two junior
fat thugs lying on the ground, legs kicking their feet wildly, hands ot ears.
He didn’t see Fred. He backed up as the smoke cleared, bumping into Nancy, who
looked up at him with a gigantic smile on her face.
The
Answer:
1. John Tyler, the 10th President of the USA
succeeded WH Harrison who died after a month in office. Like me he was a big
Sates Rights guy. Yet he was also a little like Obama in that he believed hta
the president should set policy instead of deferring to congress. In fact he
often bypassed the Whig establishment congress. But, he was not popular to many
including his cabinet which resigned. 2. Janet Rankin, A Repub, was elected to
congress in 1914. Doug Wilder of Virginia was the first elected black Governor.
Bonus: Carrie Bradshaw is from Candice Bushnell’s Sex in the City. Carrie Mathisson
is the resourceful yet tarnished heroine of Homeland. Carrie White is the
misunderstood heroine of Stephen King’s book Carrie.
You
have to be careful when looking at recordings of the
Ancient Airs and Dances as the various suites are often lace in differnec orders. Her is the suite #2 to
get you rolling tis week.
