Today's Tids Issue 3,465
Opening Stuff:
The
great alchemist in the sky turned yesterday’s grey
chilling drear into a feast of crisp air, sun drenched fields and glistening
seas in a mere 12 hours. The zephyrs were powerful, literally breath taking,
yet part of the magnificence of this natural gift. It’s a day when spinnakers
should be popping, where sharp bows would be knifing through windblown chop. It’s
a day when you have to think, why would I ever need more than this.
Snake
oil salesmen of the 19th and early 20th
century would have loved Twitter, Instagram and all of the other instant-hysteria,-trends-in-the-twinkling-of
an-eye Machines. Think of the misconceptions, misinformation you can deliver
broadly to vapid minds. It fits nicely into the tool boxes of politicians,
Public relations experts and community organizers. One day you’re happy and the
next you’re being told your world no longer exists. And people are lining up to be cowed into living
in it. Solution: Don’t react to anything because there will be another something
tomorrow.
The
comic strip “Shoe” offers this example of irony: Getting
a stomach ache after eating comfort food.
The
U Mizzou fiasco is looking more like much ado about
nothing, except that a President has been fired which is something. When peeling
back the layers, it becomes apparent that it’s just plain inane. One of the
protest demands was the reinstatement of health insurance for Instructors
which… was cancelled by law under ObamaCare regulations. The food fasting
leader of the pack of gullible kids was the son of a wealthy Railroad exec
($8.4 Mil/year), Eric Butler, so local leader’s claims of “White Privilege now
seem more than a little bogus. The proclaimed somewhat minor incidents have no
associated real proof of having occurred. I could go on, but you get the
picture. The real problem is that big media Like the NY Times have totally
bought into the race unrest idea, so they have to protect their fannies with
more editorial fantasies -- Except for one thing. It is the digging of NYT’s
reporters that is finding no evidence of wrong doing. Crazy, Crazy new America.
The
Question:
There are a lot of great actors and actresses who
just keep on doing good jobs somewhat beneath the spotlight of super stardom. Name
some of the best vehicles for Chris Noth, Diane Lane and Joe Mantegne. Bonus: A new survey rates the best
countries for women. Name the Top Ten.

I
see where more and more states are going after the
fantasy game companies like Draft Kings and Fan Duel. Do you think it has
anything to do with states protecting the revenue from their own gambling
operations? It’s like a giant immovable monopoly squashing free enterprise.
Correction:
I forgot to add “Salt and Pepper to taste” for yesterday’s fricassee gravy
recipe. Sorry.
Hey
wait a minute – Today is Friday the 13th!
Was I wrong or what yesterday when I said how lucky we were having Thursday the
13th because It meant we couldn’t have another on Friday. See what I
was telling you earlier, wait another day before believing something on the Internet.
Actress
Pauley Perrette was pummeled last night by a homeless man
who said he was going to kill her. She had fallen and was laying on the sidewalk
when she felt a dog licking her face. The dog’s owner never stooped to ask if
she was alright, or sowed nany concern at all, as he was busy on his smart phone.
This bothered her almost as much as the pain and trauma of the assault.
Speaking
of irony, today the movie “33” about the Chile mine
disaster opens. 96 years ago today in Cherry Illinois 259 men were killed when
a fire erupted in a coal mine!
I
always felt that ISIS won so easily because they had surprise
element of being underestimated. Nobody took them seriously until they saw
heads rolling on the ground. But it now appears they just aren’t strong enough
militarily to withstand organized resistance from the more sophisticated world
armies.
The
one thing that The U Mizzou affair proves for sure
is that sports have become much to powerful on campuses.
Last
night’s NFL game looked like an ad for Christmas decorations
as the Bills and Jets showed up wearing really bright Red and Green,
head-to-toe uniforms. All they needed was twinkling lights on their helmets. It
must have been a Goodell idea
Rather
than college debt, are lower wages versus high
expectations of the coddled generation the bigger problem? Just askin’. I guess
the only wages going up are those of college professors.
In
a new book, former transportation secretary under
Obama, Ray Lahood says that bipartisanship never had a chance under Barack. Add
in Harry Reid to the pot, and there was no chance for meaningful cooperation.
The only time things had a chance of working was when Joe Biden got involved
with Congress.
Barack
Obama: the Lip Service President.
The
Parking Lot: Chapter 28 continues…
It didn’t
take long for Jeremiah to find out that the post war new settlers did not
entirely agree with the ownership rights to the land. They arrived at the old homestead
where his father and mother and a couple of sisters still ran a tidy home and nourished
many acres of farmland. In fact Richard was a solid citizen of the area having
been there well before new population. But, the newcomers didn’t like the idea
of his son Jeremiah coming in after
living fro ten years with the Wampanoags and taking ownership of acreage twice
that of his father.
While
living with his in-laws, Jeremiah would spend many days back up near the big
lake building a home for his family, hoping for the day when he would be allowed
to live beyond the eyes of his mother-in-law. As he made the many trips he
began to notice that sprinkled within the forests of his lands were many new sheds,
and small families living meagerly in them. It bothered him and he spoke to is
father.
Now he was
riding up to the big barn next to his father’s home, along with several men he
didn’t know but who were friendly towards his father. None of the men looked at
him, but they knew who he was.
The room
behind his father’s main living room was smoky from the kitchen nearby where
the women were preparing meat for the winter.
A few of the men were talking, but nobody came to him. He decided to stay
by himself until his father joined the group. Te men looked up when he walked
in, and the first thing he said, “You have met my son Jeremiah.” They turned
and looked at him for the first time.
“We didn’t think it was necessary,” said a larger man
named William Howland. “You’re the only Hicks we want to talk to. Your son is part
of the problem.”
Jeremiah
saw his father tense.
Reading
between the lines Movie Reviews:
--33, about the trapped Chilean miners, is well
acted well directed with many excellent special effects. The problem: You know
the ending.
--The critics hated Love The Coopers, and
consumers barely abided it. It’s about four generations of a family gathering together
for the Christmas season. During the evening a series of events coupled with unexpected
visitors leads them all to a rediscovery of family bonds. It’s a lot over the top,
but message of Christmas spirit comes through the mire.
--Man Up is a pretty good romantic comedy, or
better a drama that that has humor and romance. A woman who is super shy with
many dating disappointments decides to do the unthinkable and pretend be
somebody she isn’t after a man named Jack thinks she is his date. But her
innate honesty has her telling the truth to this man who has finally given her
a night ot remember and hope for a future. Will the Jack also man up and get
over her masquerade? I think it could be good.
The
Answer:
Chris Noth has been mr. steady in Law and Order,
as Mr. Big in Sex in the City and now as the bad husband in The Good Wife.
Mantegna is now the glue in Criminal Minds but has had great parts in movies
like Three Amigos, Godftaher III and Up Close and Personal. He has also
c=scored in TV programs First Monday and Joan of Arcadia. Diane Lane w=once
hiled as the enxt Grace Kelly after her roll in A Little Romance, and has beee
good in Unfiathful, The outsiders,
Perfect Storm, and the snoozer Under the Tuscan Sun. But she is alwys good n
her roles. Bonus: The study measures progressive attitudes towards gender
equality. Ina near tie, Sweden is a
smidge higher than Finland. The rest are Denmark, Austria, Norway, France, UK,
Germany, USA and China. Notice that they are generally cold weather countries.
Draw your own conclusions. I don’t want to get in trouble.
Have
a great weekend, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!
