Nostalgia is good:
Today is National Make Your Dream Come True Day. How great is that!
Good Reader Pun of the Day: Just spent $50 on a belt that doesn’t fit … big waist.
One of the worst financial times I remember was during the late Carter through the early Reagan years when interest rates were unconscionable. Yesterday’s high inflation news was the result of coming out of Covid and a temporary economy somewhat fueled by wild government largess. But it might not as bad as 1957 when people were worried that weekly grocery bills would approach $20!
Big numbers like yesterday’s 7% inflation growth report may just fly over heads of a large part of America, but it is a definite warning sign dactiseedstbe take. You have to wonder why the lords of the NFL decided to schedule a night game in Buffalo for the first Playoff weekend in -- January! A month up there where it is really, really cold; when you need to squeeze every inch of warmth from the sun. NFL – Nutty Football Committee.
The Question:
What were the top Songs of 1957?
The Headlines:
--Markets Up Just After Opening; New Jobless Claims Creep Up Again To 230K.
--Russia Says Ukraine Talks Have Hit Dead End; Poland Warns Risk Of War.
--College Enrollment Dips Again; More Kids Opting For Jobs.
--Senior Tories Urge Boris To Quit Party After His Apology.
--Freeze To Return To The East; Midwest Already In Deep.
1957 was I the middle of the “ I like Ike” era where peeps generally were quite happy about everything except Vicuna overcoats. But a few people were concerned that movies were affecting children because somebody would utter damn or hell once or twice. And that the ew $1.00 minimum wage would bring down industry.
The Playoff Picture is set and the games look pretty good for the Weekend and Monday. We finished the regular season at 10-6 for yearend total of 185.5-88.5 or 68% It was nice to pick two thirds correct, but 75% is still my goal. Last week could have been 6 and 10 except for a few lucky picks. Or should say, The Old Tids Pickers as usual saw things that the national experts missed. Back-Patting is Iat Tids Central.
Ok, let’s get to this weekend’s Games. AFC Saturday afternoon has Cincinnati versus Las Vegas. The Bengals and Joe Burrow have captured the imagination of America but the LV Raiders have been gritty down the stretch. I am going LV. Up in Buffalo where temps will be in the Zero degrees area. I have to pick the Bills over my emotions. But you know where my heart will be, all the way. NFC Sunday has San Fran at Dallas and I’m going with the upset. Niners to win. Tampa Bay should beat the Eagles. This may be closer than we think, But Brady is looking very good right now. I have to say that the Steelers are playing tough right now like they have for years late in the season, KC is just too good. and also playing very well.
How may dreams did we all have when we were around 20 years old. How many came true?
Yesterday, the first two groups on the Tids email lists may have gotten the wrong link to the Supremes song I mentioned. I corrected it for other releases of the Tids, but in case to you didn’t see it in your version, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTBmgAOO0Nw
A big controversy around here is that a developer wants to tear down one of the 20 remaining Jerry O’Mahoney Diner Corp classic silver, metal eateries to build a bigger gas station and convenience store, for a driveway! Yikes. This historic edifice, this tribute to a delightful past has been run by one family for over five decades, gone, for a driveway. For a biz that will employ a few people at low wages. The Jerry O’Mahoney Company of Elizabeth New Jersey built 2,200 of those roadside diners from 1917 to 1952.
One of the most creative TV shows of any era was “Batman” starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. It was fun and spoofy and a break from the humdrum. You tended to always have a smile on your face. That show hit the airwaves in 1968. That must have been a smiley year despite all of the anger in the streets.
Yesterday an asteroid the size of a house traveling at a speed of 18,000 miles per hour just missed earth by a mere 53,000 miles. In universe speak, that is really, really close. Consider yourself lucky today. Do something crazy!
The Answer:
Elvis was number one with All Shook Up. The rest of the top ten were Love Letters I the Sand by Pat Boone, The Diamonds and Little Darlin’, Tab Hunter and Young Love, Jimmy Dorsey with So Rare, Pat Boone and Don’t Forbid Me, D Sigi’ te Blues by Guy Mitchell, Too Much by Elvis, and number ten, Round and Round by Perry Como. Also in the top twenty we had The Everly Brothers singing Bye Bye Love, and Debbie Reynolds with Tammy. One of my favorites was the number 21 – Searchin’ by the Coasters.
