Why is there a word called “Hate”?

Today's Tids Issue 5,076

Pendulums swing two ways:

I had an ancestor far away,

A poet,

Who wrote a verse,

From love,

About two hundred years ago today.

Sitting upon green hills of Irish sod,

Musing by the sea,

Of his dear brother, sailing away,

To the beautiful USA.

For opportunities,

For his family and he.

To America across the ocean wide.

The poet felt his brother’s pride.

A nation building

After setting itself free.

Upon sweat and toil

To fulsome gilding.

My ancestors, and many more,

Worked to create,

This prized, democratic state.

Yet today we see dismissed

Our heroes’ past;

Attacks on institutions grand;

The capitol of this beautiful land.

So blessed.

And I wonder

What would the poet say?

As his tears dripped upon that bog.

Of ideals pursued,

Of dreams for perfection,

Gone astray.

In case you missed it, today is “National Take a Poet to Lunch Day!

I got an urgent message in my email this morning saying I still have time to sign up for the Boston Marathon. Hmmm. I wonder how I ever got put on that list.

The Nasdaq collapsed yesterday. It was, they say, because of fears of the Fed raising rates probably based on the day ‘s good economic news. I thought the market discounted that several weeks ago after Powells December 15 remarks. There’s always something down in that that canyon.

The Question:

America was built upon the backs of many from across the seas. What are the five top countries of origin for USA citizens?

A reader reminds us that it took 20 years, trillions of dollars ad four presidents to replace the Taliban in Afghanistan with the…. Taliban.

Today’s World:

Pope Francis Urges People Not To Choose Pets Over Children. Don’t tell the pet food makers that.

I had incredibly healthy dogs and I fed them all the foods that today’s new coddling, designer dog food makers say is bad for them. Dogs will eat anything gravy o it. So will I. Arf!

The ole’ Tids-Pickers had a good week last week going 14-2 bringing the annual record to 175-82-1 (68%). It will be tough to beat that mark this week as there are so may possible toss-ups based on the current status of playoff ins and outs. Will the ins rest lineups? Can a lesser team rise up to save its self-esteem by going out a winner? There are a couple of really key games this week, particularly the LA Chargers against the LV Raiders, in effect a playoff game. The Raiders showed guts last week rising up to beat a very good Indy team. LAC has been hard to read. I’ll go Raiders. San Fran must beat rival LA rams or it is bye-bye. The Rams are gelling but do they have the incentives. Actually, yes – win to stay ahead of Arizona. I will pick the Rams. Also, New England at Miami has some meaning and it will be a good game between two old AFC rivals, NE needs it if they are to stay alive for the AFC East championship. I will pick the Pats with my heart. Miami will be tough.

Hazy Picks, Department: I don’t think KC will fall asleep against Denver. In the disappearing coaches bowl, I have to go with Minn over Chi. Mayfield is sitting out the game against Cincy. But, Joe Burrow is too. Is still have to go with Cincy. GB really should beat Detroit. But the lions have surprised at times. Go GB. The Colts secure their playoff spot winning against Jax. Rothlisberger is playing his last game at home. Baltimore’s limping while the Steelers have a scant chance for a spot. I pick Pitt. The Titans need to win against Houston and they will in a good battle. I have to pick WFT over the Giants who are in disarray. TB will walk all over Carolina. Tom Bardy never takes a rest. I’m loving a scenario where the NY Jets rise up to beat the Bills to prove that last weeks near miss against TB was no fluke. And… giving the Pats the AFC East title! Not a chance, dreamer. I’ll pick Atlanta over New Orleans.

Two other games have meaning and are tough picks for a variety of reasons. Philly against Dalals is a rival game and Philly wants it bad for the post season. Dallas is in and out and can be sloppy. I’ll go Iggles. Another game with little meaning but interesting for many pickers Arizona against Seattle. I’m going out on a limb to pick the Seahawks.

I think comparing Jan 6 to Pearl Harbor is ae gigantic leap into mischaracterizing information and only f serves to further dilute the credibility of VP Harris.

There is supposedly a pretty decent snow storm coming. Can you still make snow angels in this secular world? To be safe, I‘ll just make a snow(They/Them).

I used to always like the simplicity and silence of a great snow storm until it became political like everything else.

61.3 % of voting eligible Americans voted i 2020. In 1964 it was 69.3% ad has been declining ever since. The lowest between 1964 and 2020 was in 1994 at 54%. 2012 and 2016 were at about 56.3%. USA: The United States Of Apathy.

The Answer:

While the greatest current influx country of origin is Mexico by far, it is well short of large populations of Americas from these countries. Number one group is German at about 12%. Next is Irish, followed by Englsh, Italian and Polish. (Note: the fourth largest group is actually people who identify themselves as “Americans”, which demographers say are most likely of English origin. That could place English up the ladder a bit more.) After Polish we have French, Scottish, Norwegian and Dutch. Here are top other countries of origin, many of which are now growing. Middle East: Arab, Armenian, Iranian, Jewish. Hispanic: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Salvadore, Dominican Rep, and several SA countries.  Spain is number 8 on that list. Blacks: Jamaica is #1 followed by Haiti, Nigeria, Trinidad, Ghana, Barbados, and sub-Saharan Africa. Asians: China, Philippines, India, Viet Nam, Japan.
