Ma and Pa where are you.

Today's Tids Issue 5,341

Barely a prick in the Balloon:

Home grown may become a thing of the past, and it doesn’t make me happy.

Yesterday the Federal government forced airlines to shut down. When asked about reimbursing inconvenienced Customers, the FAA said the government doesn't reimburse. Yet just a few weeks ago these Government demagogues were ridiculing and hanging airline CEO’s by their thumbs demanding payments and perks to agitated customers. It’s too bad the government doesn’t understand the real world.

Yesterday I wrote a headline about the Monterey Peninsular becoming an Island. A reader sent me a story from ten years ago that said exactly the same thing. Beware of hysterical predictions. Rivers rise and rivers recede.

Vegetarians' favorite movie: Kale a mockingbird. (Thanks to a punny reader.)

Another longtime favorite business of locals, a diner type eatery and gathering spot, closed its door this week. It seems to be happening more and more. I don’t whether it’s because so many of these family-owned businesses have just run out of family to continue or if the economics of running a small biz in today's more complex leaning towards socialism society has just turned everything simple and sensible upside down.

Today is Friday the 13th. Don't worry about it.

The Question:

Name the historical traditional founders of each of the 13 original colonies.

The TidsPickers are nearing the end of another betwixed year. We went 11-5 in that mostly upside-down weekend to end the regular season 183-89 (.279%). 2023 can’t come too soon! Now for the playoffs. There will be six games with two teams, Eagles and Chiefs receiving byes. Playoffs can be rife with upsets. So, there is a lot of potential doubt in these picks. On Saturday we have San Franh against Seattle. I love the way Seattle battles, but I don’t think tey can stop the Niners who seem to have it all together. Even with a raw QB, a new fan favorite Brock Purdy. The second game that day is intriguing. Jax is maturing nicely, and they certainly have a great to be at QB. LAC also found its way later and has good young QB too. I like Jax momentum, On Sunday there are three. Mami is basically QBless. I have to pick Buffalo in this one. The Giants and Vikes played it close earlier this year. I like the Vikes. A real war would have been Ravens at Bengals if Lamar was there. I think Burrow is good enough to pick Baltimore apart. Monday night is another mystery game in that Brady knows how to win and Dallas has been iffy at times. I just think that if Dallas doesn’t make stupid mistakes, they can breeze. So, I have it SF, Jax, Buff, Minn Cinn and Dall.

People sometimes say to me that I should like Biden because he is a good guy and not Trump. But honestly, I find him inept and uninspiring and frankly haven’t trusted him since the 1980’s. And I certainly don’t think he or Trump, for that matter, should bother us all by running for president again.

Yesterday everybody was excited because inflation was only up 6.5 percent from last December. It may just be because gas has subsided a bit from the fall. We will find now in January energy prices surging in colder climes which could end that downward inflation increase watch. Judging from news out of China I expect cost of products to rise as China shutters some factories. Yes, their economy is all of suddenly not doing well, or at least the news is finally coming out. Our labor costs now more beholden to legislative action as opposed to economics are rising which will add to burden of lower costs for goods and services. And finally going out further it appears is not going to get cheaper. If third world manufacturing dries up, Dollar stores will become Ten Dollar stores. Really, it is not rocket science.

This is our third out of four long weekends in a row – MLK day.

And, when I win a billion plus tonight. I will become an inflator.

The Answer:

Virginia was first settled in 1607 and was founded by the London company which had money problems. The first village disappeared. The charter was signed in 1609 by Nathanial Butts of the Plymouth Company. But earlier John Smith and John Rolph laid claim to Virginia. Henry Hudson discovered New York in 1609, and the colony was settled by the Dutch leaders Peter Minuet and Peter Stuyvasant. Later in 1664 the Duke of York founded it for England. Many New Englanders had already drifted down and were living on Long Island with the Dutch. Massachusetts was first settled in Plymouth by the Puritans in 1620 led by William Bradford. In 1623 John Wheelwright was an early settler of New Hampshire but many feel John Mason was the true founder there. In 1638. In the 1630’s we had George Calvert founding Maryland for the Catholics, Thomas Hooker, Connecticut, Roger Williams Rhode Island and Peter Minuit & the New Swedish Company opening up Delaware.

North Carolina was founded by Virginians led by Nathanial Batts. But North and South were founded by English land companies headed by a group of Lords to save them from the Spanish. New Jersey was founded by George Carteret and Lord Berkely (They were among the lords who Founded South Carolina). Pennsylvania was founded by Willian Penn, or as he is affectionately known n Philly, Billy. Georgia was founded in 1732 by James Edward Oglethorpe. I thought that was going to be an easy question to answer. But believe me the info was disjointed, and at times questionable to me as too many historians are getting into the act. Not quite the way I remembered it from 4th grade.

Have a great weekend, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!
