Today's Tids Issue 5,442
Polishing grey cells:
This is a big week around here. It is the week when people, mostly of the greying hair set, home in on what courses out of about 70 offered by Salve Regina U’s Circle of Scholars continuing education department. I just have to start this week’s Tids with a little shoutout here. There are people little known who do amazing things each day across this country, this planet of ours. This CoS is a remarkable operation, remarkably run by an inventive director and advisory committee. You can go to an opera, solve the Middle East problem, and perhaps the National Debt; you can learn why we might never see a visitor from another planet or just learn how to use a phone camera or how to get the most out of hearing aids. You can feel art, poetry and actually come close to understanding Shakespeare. And how and why sports teams make big deals; the why’s of the cultural morass. And you may meet some good new friends along the way.
I just realized that a performance by the RI Wind Ensemble is not a lecture on alternative energy. You never know these days.
I'm missing having a good football game to watch. Oh, there are plenty of weekend NCAA Basketball games, but they have become a visual blur, morass of unknown players who more than likely won't be around next year. Teams will cease to coalesce into traditional well-grounded teams over the four years. Rick Patino said last week that it will become nearly impossible to build “a consistent culture at a high-level program.” I think I am beating this topic into submission with repeated tirades. But it really bothers me.
The “Adagietto Sehr Langsam from the 4th movement of Mahler's 5th symphony is about as pretty and genuinely moving piece of music as I have ever heard.

To where do phone companies send the invoices for all of the wandering illegal immigrants with smartphones. Probably to the phones. But where does the money come from.
Sports team owners have effectively created a scarcity of stadium or arena seats, forcing up ticket prices using the old supply and demand theory. Their MBA staff knows that there is now a gigantic population segment of events fanatics who have more disposable income than necessary for basic human needs and can comfortably absorb obscene ticket prices. That in turn pushes the regular cost-conscious fan to the TV screen, which just happens to provide over 60% of the sports team's revenue. Eyeball go up and thus ad rates follow. And... it is easier for bettors to throw even more money into the pot in front of the TV screen than in the arena. Whata world we live in.
I have to take a long walk today. I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. I wonder how many calories I can walk off in fifteen minutes.
I went to to a lecture on Saturday. It was about who designs all the everyday items we take for granted. He was a pretty well-known industrial and graphic designer himself. In one area he looked at famous designers like Eames and Corbusier and told us how it was often talented wives who helped them make a difference. He said one of the Ingenius practical designs of all time was the Scotch tape dispenser. But a couple of the more interesting moments came in answer to questions. One woman suggested that the country would have been better earlier if women hadn't been suppressed for so long. The lecturer, who was no conservative said, that you can’t use today’s society to measure what was necessary 70,150 to 200 years ago., He pointed out that just mere survival required a collaborative effort between men and women, all members of households. Another questioner, smugly asked, “when will designers stop using dreadful plastics.” The speaker said, “Plastics are not the problem It is the irresponsibility of humans who use plastics. Tis rare in this new overly sensitive world to find a person who has the guts to speak the truth.
I have read of a new cultural phenomena which I am calling “Sobriety Lite”. Apparently, many former alcoholics are trying to normalize the idea that you are still sober even if you jump into cannabis but are careful. But that’s just being human in this era where nobody really wants to give up anything even if they can't afford it. But addiction is addiction. I don't drink, but I can’t stay away from writing this crap every day. See, any addiction has the ability to be a negative blight against society.
The Answer:
Johnny be Food, Moon Liver, Unchained Celery, Que Sorbet Sorbet. Twist and Sprout, I left my Heart in San FranCrisco, Sweet Carmel Wine, Blueberry Dill and Take me Home Country Toads (Frogs Legs) BTW, my friend who sent these used ChatGPT. I bet ChatGPT didn't laugh. Where's the fun in that.
It’s about a week til Valentines Day. I think I'll find some great love songs to create a little warmth over the next few days. After Tids its always nice to find something pleasant
