Today's Tids Issue 5,823
Out of Whack:
I always thought conservatives looked for a smaller Federal influence, involvement in our country based on constitutionally defined states’ rights. Silly me.
Actually, I believe in village, town and city rights. That’s where the people are.
I intended this fine day in June
To begin with a wistful poem
One gentle, maybe of love
Of romantic wanderings
Within the dreams we roam.
Last night I was lying on a bed looking up at the stars, and I wondered, “Where the hell is my roof!” --Steven Wright.
The Question:
Who said, “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”
The Headlines:

--Cal’s Newsome to Sue Trump Admn for Deploying State's National Guard.

That five hour and 29-minute battle between Alcaras and Sinner at the French Open Tennis was match for the ages. Hale to both of warriors and a little extra to Carlos who never gave up.
I know I'm a dinosaur, but I still think there is a lot more value in a good scholarship for athletes as an inducement as opposed to a few bucks in pay which will become a gold neckless or a car. You know, it's the old “teach a man to fish”, thing.
Mitch Hedberg bought a king-sized bed. He didn't know any kings, but if one came over, he guessed he'd be comfortable. “Oh, you're a king you say? Well, you won't believe what I have in store for you!”
Somebody put together a video comparing these two –Hedberg and Wright-- quirky, very funny comedian’s comments on various subjects. Like Fishing: Wright: "There’s a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot". Hedberg: "You know when they have a fishing show on TV? They catch the fish and then let it go. They don’t want to eat the fish, they just want to make it late for something".
The media probably loves Trump sending in the soldiers to LA. It makes for good nightly news visuals, and a divided country gives them lot to talk about on camera, and chortle over when they are off camera..
I'm reading where tourist towns may be in for a disappointment this summer. In the post pandemic relief days following covid incarceration the people spent madly and generally overpaid for everything... because freedom was more important than budgeting and the people would overpay just to assure getting away. And of course they all had the free covid cash. But now costs are catching up and it is expected people will be low price hunting.
I think most things are way too expensive. Do you know why? Because too few people question costs.
On escalators. Wright: "There was a power outage at a department store yesterday. 20 people were trapped on the escalators". Hedberg: "An escalator can never break... it can only become stairs. You should never see an 'Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order' sign, just 'Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience'".
Celebrities go crazy over celebrity performances. The giddiness at the Tony awards last night was disturbing. I watch the openings for these events because that’s generally before they begin adoring each other. Last night I was thinking, how come other professions and vocations don't get airtime to celebrate their really great achievements and contributions to fellow humans. There are millions of great people in this country who do truly amazing things for others every day. Why aren’t they on TV? Because they get their acknowledgement without the lights.
On plants: Wright: "I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it". Hedberg: "My fake plants died because I did not pretend to water them".
Hedberg and Wright had looked at the world a little differently than te average person. I wonder what they world wonder looking at world not even they could imagine.
There are gigantic mountains of money around these days because consumers pay way too much for things they may never need. TV stations pay way too much for sports events. You’d think that would reduce the cost for people attain games and events in person. But teams pay way too much for players. In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a vicious cycle of expanding costs.
The Answer:
The answer is Plato. Plato philosophized between 427 and 347 BC. Yup, nothing has changed.
Yes, nothing has changed
Love still is still the answer.
No matter the cacophony
The endless harangues.
