And the beat goes on.

Today's Tids Issue 5,915

America the Free:

To whoever stole my glasses I will find you. I have contacts.*

So, October is now ultimatum month. How discouraging. Today is the day that media have to agree with new rules from the Pentagon or lose their press credentials. So far on principles of free speech the AP, Newsmax, NY Times, Wapo, Atlantic and Reuters have returned their credentials. This tends to put a blot on the creditability of future Pentagon News no matter how much the pros spin it And in a week a bunch of colleges will have to pledge allegiance to governance by the White House or lose research money and more. Plenty of nerves in boardrooms I’m sure, but MIT has already said No. MIT President Kornbluth statement seems to echo a basic conservative covenant: “Fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone,” I don't know about you, but all this dogmatic crap bothers the hell out of me.

Wall Street will be looking at earning's reports this week, hopefully with plenty of good news to overcome increasing trade war jitters. I expect a raucous stock ride this week.

When I was told that the film contained “adult themes”, I was hoping for more sex and less about mortgages.

The Question:

Who were the two combatants in the Battle of Hastings and why is it significant?

The Headlines:

--Markets Open Lower as Trade War Worries Fray Investor Nerves; JP Morgan Earnings Super Impressive, But Dimon Warns of Global Headwinds; Goldman Also String on Successful Deal Making; Wells Fargo and Citi Join in Parade of Earnings Successes; AMD Announces Big Deal with Oracle.

Netflix is luring lot of big-time stars to new movies, but that doesn't mean the plots are any good. Bee leery. Right now, I’m into watching The Hostage miniseries, and it keeps me riveted. The Woman in Cabin Ten will keep you interested, and it moves fast with a fine ending twist. But when you look back you plenty of writer shortcuts to make the story work.

*Stolen from a witty friend.

The trouble with this “Bubble” talk is that it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. -- Talk about something often enough and people begin to believe it.

Remember how those Goodyear blimps lumbered across the sky giving us remarkable overhead views of football games and other events. Now you can do it all in an instant with drones. Everything is going to get much faster,

PS: This is what the alphabet would look like if Q and R were missing.

Here's a curious birthday juxtaposition for today. Charels Kirk and George Floyd.

Hegseth sounds like the King and the Pentagon his castle, Will he have cauldrons of boiling oil on the roof.

I told my wife she was drawing her eyebrows too high. She looked surprsed.

The Answer:

The Combatants were King Harold of England an and the Norman William the Conquer. Harold was killed and William became King two months later. The Norman victory changed England forever, dramatically moving it away from their Anglo-Saxon heritage and introducing a more organized government, leading to the concept of common law and more. Advanced construction techniques were brought leading to an era of large, impressive government buildings, cathedrals and Castles. The country became more culturally sophisticated including moving away from the Germanic language and to today's English influenced by Latin and French. (Though many an English word today are based on German) The conquest refocused England away for Scandinavia and Germanic influences all of Europe.

Of interest, Old English words would be Cow and Sheep. After the Norman conquest cultural transformation, they became Beef and Mutton. So, how great was that! Thank God for William the Conqueror.

Singer, guitarist Justin Hayward is 79 today. And even more significant the great John Lodge died 4 days ago at 82. That gives me a reason to play Hayward written Knights in White Satin. Not that you ever need a reason to play Moody Blues.
