For Changing Eras:
I
think too many people try to measure the past based on what
they know about today. I have been reading tons of history about the original
families and communities of New England
and Long Island NY, which were highly interconnected by water. I see there in
the mid 1600’s a lot of people making something out of nothing. I see mostly regular
people working hard just to raise a family and keep their children alive in
hardened conditions. Paradigm change is not only of today’s technology, but of
religious and economic conditions of those harsh early days up to the
Revolutionary War. People had to be mobile because of changing needs and
severely changing mores. I see instead of the double incomes of today, two
strong backs of yore, a husband and wife working together to basically survive;
Children working the farms or entering the workforce at young ages to stabilize
families. I see religious persecution and bravery standing up for beliefs. I see
the fate of the family of the famed Anne Hutchinson and her settlement of 20, annihilated
one sunny morning by their friendly neighboring Indians in what is now near the
Throgs Neck area of the Bronx. And, their best friends, the William Thornes across
the East River on Long Island watching the deadly smoke rise black into the
sky. When I look closely at the history
of our beginnings, I see what so many fail to understand today. It didn’t just
happen on Instagram.
Basically,
all I want from Trump is for him to make nice to everybody so the stock market
remains stable.
As
the last note fades away, there is a silence buoyed by what
had gone before. The comforting melodies have ended but the quiet air lets you
feel them peacefully.

This question may tell you a lot about Americans.

I
personally like a good wine glaze on steaks.
The
quite liberal owner of the Boston Red Sox, John Henry, says
he is “Haunted” by his thoughts of previous owner Tom Yawkey. Yawkey was from South
Carolina and owned the Sox from 1933 til he died in 1976. Then his family Trust
took over until JH bought them out in 2002. For 69 years the Yawkeys owned the
Sox through thick and thin and provided many a memorable moment for the fans.
So they named a street after Tom, “Yawkey Way”, which is outside Fenway park.
But now Henry is “Haunted” by a man he never knew, but who some called a racist. Haunted. Players on Yawkey team members interviewed
yesterday say Tom Yawkey was a great owner and his attitude towards race had
changed dramatically over the years. But, some people never forgive, and some
people like to feel haunted. Haunted?
Oh
yeah, John Henry wants to join the eliminate history
crowd and rename the street after a good ballplayer who didn’t play in the
field, David Ortiz. It should be Yawkey Way, but people will be swayed, because
that’s’ what’s happening today.
Putting
“Haunted by an imagined past” into perspective: A
new Marist poll in conjunction with PBS says that 62% of Americans think that
statues should remain as historical symbols. 27% say no and 11% aren’t sure. 52%
on the same poll says Trump missed it (“Should have been stronger”) in his initial
reaction response to the Charlottesville tragedy.
Egos
of men have brought them down. Take for instance
Peter Stuyvesant, who just plain hated Quaker hats. And he was particularly
irate when they, his inferiors, would not remove them in his presence. He just
could not get over it The men wearing them drove him crazy to the point of
irrationality. The Flushing NY Quakers were particularly annoying to him for
their repeated attempts at establishing a free community and he spent an inordinate
amount of his time trying bring them down. But the more he tortured and persecuted
them the more they banded together in resolve. And then, two things happened: Stuyvesant
was relieved of his position by Dutch authorities after he deported a
brutalized Quaker Leader to Holland. The Town of Flushing established a Freedom
of religion community similar to that of Rhode Island. And, it was all because
of one man’s obsession with hats.
Sorry
folks, but yesterday I forgot to go back and edit a Tidlet
about the emergence of WalMart and Target as potential big, pesky competitors
of Amazon. Today WalMart reasserted that they have no fear of Amazon in the
grocery biz.
Trump
should have learned by now that he doesn’t have a chance with
the press. If he stood there and read a speech completely written by Barak
Obama, he would be roundly criticized by the press. That’s one of his problems,
his ego won’t let him learn. Regardless how nice it is to be independent of traditional
politics, you still need allies in the public and private sectors and in the
press to get things done.
Now,
I believe that the left Marxist anarchists are also a huge problem in this country.
They just disguise their hatred with the pretense of kindness.
The
more you read history the ore you see that old problems never
change.

Between the Lines Movie Reviews:
--Logan Lucky seems to be the favorite of the critics,
but that could be because they love the director Steven Soderberg. Two brothers
try to reverse a family curse by attempting an elaborate scheme for a robbery
during the Coca-Cola 600 race. Has some laughs and drama.
In Shot caller, a DUI sends a businessman to prison and
transforms him into a stoic ruthless prison gangster. Adapting to the new brutal,
violent code of ethics will assure is survival. But he slowly loses his
identity as the new prison family replaces his own. Sounds interesting.
--I have a feeling there is a little too much
chit-chat in The Hitman’s Bodyguard. A protection agent is hired to guard his mortal
enemy a hitman. Lots of car chases through Europe. Sounds like a poor man’s Bond!
A good cast. Samuel Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, Salma Heyek and Gary Oldman.
The
Answer:
Well, I had one pizza at #10, Little Caesars, and
never went back. But #9, KFC with its luscious gravy is at the top of my list…for
any restaurant. Next is Dominos, which I though was better when it began, And
Dunkin Donuts which I consider below average, especially when they basically forced
out the far superior Tim Hortons. I was underwhelmed at my first visit to # 6
Chipotle Mexican Grill and will never go back. Arby’s roast beef tastes like
rubber. And there is number 4, Subway, which if you order a sandwich without
any veggies, you basically get a near empty roll. Now our New England sandwich chain
d’Angelos is head and shoulders above Subway. #3 is Papa Johns, another sub par
pizza joint. Now, Panera Bread is several levels above any of the previous
restaurants except KFC. PB has imaginative well prepared food in a good feeling
environment. #1 is Chick-fil-A which continues to lead the way for most
Americans. I have only been there once and liked it, but don’t remember raving
about it. Bonus: Antifa is a violent
leftist group who, for instance, yesterday raided The Hennipen County Minn
Court House, burned the county flag and hoisted their own. Antifa stands for
“Anti-Fascist” and it was the group that destroyed parts of Washington DC
during the last inauguration. They are also the group that attacked the Nazi
group marching in Charlottesville.
There
are some groups who will call anybody who has an
alternative opinion a racist or a fascist. I don’t listen to them at all. And
that includes John Henry.
Find
a good recipe for a red wine reduction sauce, and
enjoy a good meal.
See
you Monday, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y
