Today's Tids Issue 4.623
Days always come:
Coronavirus has made
weather reports as irrelevant as presidential candidates.
I love the way the Earth
rotates. It literally makes my day.
The good news is that since
the beginning of this rampaging deadly virus, 202,541 people have recovered and
are back to normal But, that is out of about 951,171 confirmed cases in 177
countries. Without question, the cured number (Generally underreported) will increase
dramatically, with the hope by all that the growth of the new case numbers will
decline steadily. While the US has the most cases, the Italy situation is the grimmest
with recoveries there (16,847) almost matching deaths (13,155) out of 110,574
total cases. I like seeing the recovery numbers in reported statistics, don’t you?
I have been analyzing
the spread of this ravaging disease in Europe and I have come to the conclusion
that it is basically cultural. These are the inbred habits hardest to break. The
British always meet a 4:00 PM for tea. The Italians love to hug and the French
love to Kiss. In Germany, no reasonable citizen would ever miss an engineering seminar.
Bulls always keep the Spanish coming. The Dutch like to stand in groups looking
at tulips. In Russia they just have too many people in too small government issued
apartments. In the US it is more likely the result of the entitlement syndrome.
We feel we are entitled to immunity. Have a party!
If The Tids seem clearer
today, it may be because I washed my glasses, and I can see my fingers hitting the
keys.
The Question:
Which popular news publication was founded by
Alexander Hamilton: the NY Times The Washington Post, The New York Post The
Wall Street J0urnal? Bonus: From what language do you think te sord

Cause and effect, Department:
High earning bartenders are on the sideline looking for
whatever job they can find. But. liquor stores are crazy places, with sales up
between 20 and 30%. The only booze segment not doing well is Craft breweries,
where they rely heaviest on bar sales. The demand for basics will not change that
much during the CV era, it’s just where you get them that ‘s changing.
By the way,
a British man in Wuhan said that he caught Coronavirus and that whiskey cured
it. Just in case you are interested. But, you have to drink alone.
Add University of Texas
students returning home from Cabo with CV to our list of April Fools.
Did the European virus spread originate
at a ski area in the alps? That’s what health authorities from Iceland to Denmark
to Austria have finally realized. The ski area was “Iscgl” a resort now known
as the “Ibiza of the Alps”. It is a huge anyway and any everything party resort
that gathers young adults, and probably older hedonists too, from all over the continent.
It is as well known for extra curricula activities as it is for skiing. And it
appears it was known that Coronaviruses was present and town officials failed
to shut it down. And infection investigators even narrowed it down to “Saliva exchange”
at notorious beer pong games.”
(Note: “Ibiza”
is old Spanish for “party til you drop”, and it is also the name of a small
party island off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean.)
The soldier who
survived mustard gas and pepper spray is a seasoned veteran.
It should be business
as usual for most pizza shops, Most have always made their dough from takeout
and delivery anyhow.
You may have read about
the Covid problem on the 5,000-man USS Roosevelt giant aircraft carrier. A
reader wonders how you maintain the six-foot social distancing on a ship even that
large?
Spell-Check
must be in isolation. It still doesn’t recognize the spelling of Covid.
While the national news media tells us
nightly that the USA has the most coronavirus cases, we are far down the list
in per capita cases. In the latest full chart I saw (Late March) Switzerland was
#1 with 1,340 per million followed by Spain, Italy, Austria and Belgium. The US
per capita Number at that time (The US had most cases at 83K.) was 210/million. I found some updated as of
the moment case info from Johns-Hopkins and made few calculations. Switzerland
now stands at 2,126/ million and the USA is now at 657/million. The pattern
seems to follow for most all countries. I figured Spain at 2,391/M and Italy at
1,772. Italy’s rate is slowing. Germany was at 480/M and is now at 956/M. So, the
US now has 216,405 of the 952,171 world cases, but our rate per person number is
lower. There have been 48,320 deaths and
202,541 reported recoveries worldwide. The US has 5,136 deaths and 8,870
reported recoveries. But, regardless of numbers an how your manipulate them it
is very bad.
So, did you hear
about the Tids reader who was so bored he went outside and then knocked on his
own door. Then he came back in and said,” Who is it?”
Better than
watching the stock market.
The Answer:
Alexander Hamilton started the New York Post. That
was in 1801. It cost $10,000, and the backers were Federalist Party members dismayed
at the election of Thomas Jefferson. NYP says it is te Oldest continuous Daily Newspaper,
but several other papers use technicalities stake that claim. The Providence
Journal 1829 (No Interruptions like Post had had for strikes) Two others, The Hartford
Courant and the New Hampshire Gazette were started in 1764 and 1754
respectively. But, The HC was a weekly until 1836 and the NHG is still a
weekly. Bonus: Shampoo sounds French to me, but is actually Hindu. It
comes from the Hindi word Champo which means to press, knead, soothe. It arose
in Colonial India around 1762.
We can’t help
everyone, but everyone can help someone.
