Today's Tids Issue 4,638
The Covid Curtain:
I seem to be writing
a lot of stuff for this morning mess, and
throwing more of it away. Maybe I have coronavirus information overload.
Cars today
are getting about 3 weeks to a gallon.
Shopping with
curb side pickup works quite well. Unless you go to the wrong store.
So, if the government
reacts to what most scientists are basically saying or implying – the country
can go back to work if we lock down all older people – does that mean that Joe
Biden and Donald Trump won’t be allowed to campaign?
Have you noticed
that saying “Lockdown” instead of “Lockup” sounds a lot less like putting people
in prison?
The Question:
What duet sang “I love you a bushel and a peck?

“Book now
for the lecture on expanding the universe because space is limited.”
Excellent Analogy of the day, Department:
“The curve is flattening; we can start lifting restrictions
now.” And: “The parachute has slowed our rate of descent; we can take it off now.”
Grandma said, Department:
Our Excellent Tids Field Reporter (ETFR) sends in this
analysis of society going forward. According to a consensus of various opinions
gleaned from a panel of key analysts, ETFR says, “If government can bail you out
on the downside, they have every right to control you on the upside.” There was
also strong agreement that after the conclusion, taxes will go up – faster with
Biden and slower with Trump. Also, expect increasing prices since remaining companies,
some severely stressed, will raise prices in the face of less competition. So
why is this the “Grandma said department”? Because my grandmother always told me, if you
accept anything from the government, they will own you.
The live performances in The Voice
competition begin in two weeks. The producers are telling us that we can expect
a lot of changes from the past? Duh. Basically from what I have found they will
be filming remotely, like the Fallon show, for instance. This coming Monday they
will have a two hour review of everything that has happened so far, which should
bring us all up to date.. Blake Shelton says, “This is going to be nuts!” The
top 8 singers going in who could win going into Live Shows are, according to
one rater: #8 Pastor Todd Tilghman, Arel Moon, Allegra Miles, Mandi Thomas,
Camm Wess, Megan Danielle, Toneisha Harris and #1 Thunderstorm Artis. I personally
like Allegra, and I think Megan. It will be odd, but I hope refreshing.
Sunday night will
bring us the final final of one of my absolutely favorite shows, Homeland. The
premise going into the last show ever is fraught with possibilities. Edge of my
chair and it’s only Thursday.
Speaking of Prisoners –
“Mayor De Blasio is shocked that released criminals are committing more crimes.”
Leadership? The mayor thinks it is “unconscionable …that folks were shown mercy
and this is what some of them have done.” Do you think he may have been told by
an advisor of 200 before the release that flooding the streets with criminals
is generally not good for society?
The Social Security reserves
stand at $2.9 Trillion which is actually a $2 Billion increase from the previous
year. Due to the CV mess, Congress has created out of thin air about $2.7 trillion.
I don’t know if that means anything, but I thought I would explore it. It’s
like an open-ended seed pack to fertilize a good conspiracy theory.
I’m worried that the Government
will use Covid as a reason to take over some private businesses or institutions.
The problem is that they will need congress to pass billions to help them run
what they absorb.
I have become
addicted to Guy’s Grocery Games.
I traded four rolls
of toilet paper for a case of crunchy Cheetos. I’m already for tonight’s NFL Draft.
Ya-hoooooooooooo!
The Answer:
Well, Doris Day certainly did give us a great
version of “I love you a bushel and a Peck” with a hit single. But the great
duet was by Betty Hutton and Perry Como.
I always like Betty Hutton,
and I never thought she got the due she deserved. A look back at her life and career
would make an even more haunting bio pic than Judy’s. I first remember Hutton
in the movie “Annie Get Your Gun”. Hutton’s life and career took a serious downward
spiral which almost ended in suicide. A Catholic Priest named Father Peter Maguire
brought her back. She converted and found herself quite content working as a cook
at a rectory in Portsmouth RI. Some old NYC acting pals went to bat for her and
several NY morning TV shows gave her a shot at being seen again. At that time, she
was “Happily employed as a hostess at Newport RI’s Jai Alai arena.” She got a couple
of decent gigs. At 60, she Went back to school and earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology
from Salve Regina U, also in Newport. She went on opt teach acting and singing at
Boston’s Emerson College. But, when she was on top, she was the best around.
