Today's Tids Issue 5,178
People just being people:
A Happy Memorial Day, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!! Salute our flag. Remember a hero. Say a prayer.
If only politicians didn’t get in the way. If only people’s representatives were people too. If they only weren't adherent to parties and ideologies first. We might get something done for just about everyone. Perhaps even on the most divisive issues.
I laughed hard out loud a couple of times at Sunday’s comic strip. One in particular from “Rhymes with Orange” got me chuckling. It showed a couple walking in a park coming upon a man walking a robot dog. The man says, “He doesn’t bite, but get to close and he’ll skim your credit card data.”
Good ole’ Ed, the Duke of Windsor died fifty years ago, He with Wallis Simpson became one of the great love tales ever told. I love a good romantic love tale.
The word of the day, “Zealot”: A fanatical partisan. Many a reasonable idea that created a reasonable congregation of reasonable people loses its way when the zealots take over and reason disappears from view. From Webster, Zealot used in a sentence: “Zealots on both sides of the issue resorted to name-calling and scare tactics
The Question:
There was a time when everybody knew their names, the Dione Quints, that is. Can you remember three of the five names of the five sisters?
The Headlines:
--Market Stable As Wall Street takes A Breather For Holiday.
--Supply Chain Bottlenecks Expected To Continue Due To Ukraine And China Zero Tolerance Covid Strategy.
--Car Crash In Lincoln Nebraska Rolls Into Throng Of Peedestrians At Memorial Day Event; 19 Hurt, 2 Dead.
It is cheaper to fly to Europe than it is to fly within the USA. The tourism industry here is poised to have a breakout from Covid sequestering into banner summer, and our deteriorating economic system makes it easier for Americans to pick Europe.
PGPS, Department:
My Personal Grammar Police Sergeant sent me this, “Theiyr’re”. A fits-all solution.
I think from now on my day away planning would center around un-holiday periods You know, when the roads maybe less cluttered, hotel rooms more available and you’ll have lesser chance at sleeping in an airport.
Grammar just doesn't understand creative expansionism.
A headline came across my phone this morning: “Trump is for losers” It turned out to be a Bridge tips column!
People don’t have as many rights as they think they do.
Yesterday I was walking fast when the pavement changed, and I felt myself in an inevitable crashing fall mode. I managed to retain my senses and slid easily into a deft shoulder roll. I checked myself for broken bones, cuts and bruises. I found a blood gushing knee. I reached into my wallet for a band aid into my pocket for a wad so tissues. But it was too little for too much gushing. Suddenly I was exposed to the trauma of hopelessness. Until when within the span of two minutes. A man asked if he could help, if I was all right. A woman in a passing car asked if she could drive me home. And then while I was hobbling along holding a tissue on the wound, peeling off the rapper of my last worn-out band aid, a woman yelled form a pickup stopped at a red light in the middle of a busy road, “I have band aids:” I brightened. I ran (Sorta) to her window where she gave me a handful plus wipes. Horns started as the light turned green. Her Hub said, “F-em’, this guy needs band aids. I found a bench and peeling open more bandages and wiping, when I heard another voice, “I Brought a first aid kit. I was driving by and saw your predicament.” I looked up and there she was my angel of mercy, a young mother with her 5 yo old daughter. Salvation. She had giant bandages. Problem solved. We didn’t ask about each other's politics or leanings, because most people are just loving people. Think of what people could get done.
If I wrote an innocuous line like “Trump gave a pretty good speech,” I would be labeled by some as hateful and on the brink of mental collapse simply because I used Trump in a sentence. That’s what Zealotry does to societal conversation.
The big news this Sunday morning was that the Red Sox pitcher, Nathan Eovaldi pitched his first ever complete game in over 211 chances. How sad mathematical based boll become?
In 1900 Joe McGinty pitched 39 complete games ana in1901 Cy Young pitched 41. In 1948 Bob Feller pitched 36 and in the National League Johnny Sain pitched 28. In 1986 Tom Candiotti pitched 17 and Fernando Venezuela pitched 20. And in 2021 Garret Cole patched 2 and German Marquez pitched 3. The fate of a good 5 inning starting pitcher now basically rests with the quality of a bullpen. Will there ever be another 20-game winner?
Yes, along came Billy Bean and his mathematicians, and it seems to have taek the edginess out of baseball.
I’m Driving past a Starbucks take out window lines yesterday and wondering who has the time to wait for 20 minutes or mor for a cup of coffee. Then I realize it must be all of those people who should be working.to ease the Burdon of businessowners.
Whatever happened to America’s sense of urgency. Do more and more people just think everything will just come their way will little effort... maybe like pitcher with a good bullpen who doesn’t have to worry about sucking it up to go all the way.
After shopping in these super cold supermarkets in my summer lighter wear, I always turn on the heated seats when I get back in my car.
The Answer:
The five were Marie, Yvonne, Emilie, Cecile and Annette. For a while it was fairytale, but it didn’t have a happily ever after ending.
Happy Memorial Day, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!!
