Today's Tids Issue 5734
Feeling Odd:
A dog walks into the unemployment office. "I need a job." He said, in perfect English. Surprised, the clerk says "I'm sure the circus would be very interested in you. Shall I contact them?"
"If you like." Replied the dog. "But why would the circus need an architect?"
You probably know by now that when I start with a joke that I am in a terminal state of confusion, languishing in a vacuous mind. And I have never been so confused as I am now. A brilliant financial guy told me yesterday, “Lately I just don't know what to do when I wake each morning hearing the news that could affect financial markets directly or subterraneously”.
If anything, this Admin has created the next great new era of talk radio. And for that matter opportunities for sarcasm in writing and humor.
I see surveys around now that name the most “romantic” restaurants. Restaurants don't create the romance. The most romantic restaurant is determined by the feeling you see in the eyes of your lover across the table. A special place is made special by the two people in it. It could be a greasy spoon. Wasn't than old tune – It was only a rundown diner until I met you.
The Question:

As I follow or try to interpret the machinations of the new Admin many thoughts arise, like what is the difference between hiring employees to meet DEI standards or hiring Fed employees only because they are pledge loyalty to and trust in Trump..
47 years ago today, I was in the middle of the 1978 Northeast Blizzard driving between Needham Mass and South Glastonbury Conn. Ta It was hairy but talk about being lucky. Twas a matter of leaving 20 minutes early. Thats all. The Northeast Blizzard was huge, devastating Boston and Providence with record snowfalls, and the rest of New England with unheard of congestion. It shut down everything. But because of its notoriety and proximity to NYC, an eve n more devastating storm in the Midwest was vastly under reported. The official “Great Blizzard of ‘78’ was that monster centered in Ohio and Michigan. A human trait I guess is to only know what you know.
We are becoming communities of wimps or is that litigants. They called off school today on a forecast of 1-3 mere inches. The snowfall didn't start util after school buses a had delivered eth coddled kids and was over way before the return home trips began. Closing school in the economic era of two working parents is a big deal in many ways.
Did I ever tell you about how a friend of mine who was Superintendent of Schools for a large RI community determined when to shut schools in the winter. He said I send My wife out to shovel the driveway and if takes her more than a half hour, schools are closed.
At around 3 million, (2.3 m full time) the Fed government employees represent the 15th largest work force in America, about 1.9%. Here's an Odd statistic about fed employment growth history.. Ther have been seven significant noticeable peaks I Government employment hiring numbers... when the US hired temporary workers to take the census. Well, I smiled at that.
The Answer:
Ok, number one industry for number of employees is Business and Professional Services followed by Health Care and Social Services. Next are State and Local Government, Hospitality and Leisure, Retail Trade, Manufacturing. Non-Agricultural Self-employed (Could be associated with other major industry segments), Financial Services, Construction, Transportation and Warehousing, Other, Wholesale, Education, Information and Fed. Utilities, Mining and Lumberjacking are below Fed.
I have a significantly busy day tomorrow. I'm not supposed to have significantly busy days. Especially on a day when I have to make the Superbowl pick. Do you know that if this Tids mess was a for-profit venture I would be barred from using the word Superbowl. It an NFL rule. If you have a party, your invite can use the word. But if a restaurant or bar has a party, they can entice people with the word “Superbowl. That’s the world we live in now.
See you all tomorrow. If I wake and see my shadow, there will be more tids a comin’.
