What would Abe think?

Today's Tids Issue 2,109
Opening Stuff:

Is there anything better than smelling super clean sheets hung out to dry on a crisp, sunny, breezy April day! That’s the way I felt yesterday and long into the night after spending a few hours walking upon rolling, greening hills above a white capped churning sea. Like a clean sheet. Like my body was cleansed of 4 months of winter’s indoor air.

If I lived in one of those neighborhoods that banned outdoor clothes lines, I’d move!

Abraham Lincoln died 145 years ago today. It got me thinking…what is a Republican supposed to be anyhow? Or a Democrat for that matter. After all, the spinners and media experts have muddled the meaning and Raison d'ĂȘtre for both parties. The reason it seems confusing today is because it has always been confusing. Today the Dems say they are the party of Jefferson. Yet, it was the Jefferson Democratic-Republican party that served as the basis for the Republican party. It was the originally the Jeff D-R’s against the Hamilton Federalists. Around the time of Monroe many federalists broke away to join Republicans (Called Whigs) in a unified party that coalesced against a formalized Andrew Jackson Democrat party. Today, the parties are more defined by their extreme Liberal and Conservative sides. The official GOP was founded in 1854 and focused against slavery. They became a combination of Northeast evangelicals and northwest agriculturalists. The three influences on the party were: 1.The change from the Calvinist view of predestination to individualism -- people finding there own salvation. 2. The Whigs brought a view of industry protectionism. 3. The third most important influence was “Nativism” – the concern about an influx of paupers with ties to the Vatican and out of control immigration to work in the more industrialized urban areas.

John McPhereson informs us that the one thing a woman doesn’t want to hear from her blind date while walking hand in hand down Main Street. “Hey, I made that license plate.”

TheQuestion:
Now we know that Abe died 145 years ago today. What famous atheist existentialist died 30 years ago today? What is paradoxical about him?

Back to More Stuff:

Speaking of Poll numbers, if I were the GOP, I would not get overly excited about touting the bad economy as their main message for a hopeful November takeover. There are signs that it could backfire in the 6 months remaining. Better issues are the mounting debt, one sided Government, declining American value system and the end of the Bush tax cuts.

Talk about gold rushes…you ain’t seen nothing like what you are going to see in the coming months on Wall Street. The banks are starting to hire again, and the word is a out that bonus promises will be near astronomical as the big players try to woo back “Masters of the Universe”

Bumper Sticker: “Except for ending slavery, Facism, Nazism and Communism, war has never solved anything.”

Poor Katie. I could see it coming, because it appears that the voters like the so called cute guys. (Or as one reader replied yesterday to my “Too cute to go” comment with – “As in Too big to fail?”) You just have to hope that Siobhan and BoSox are in the top 2 or 3. Just for some variety over the increasingly annoying drone of all the men. While have I always liked Katie for her bright and upbeat aura, and certainly for the voice, I had this sense that she wasn’t as natural while performing. At times her emotions exhibited a staged appearance.

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 66 continues. –Kent didn’t look as friendly as he tried to sound. But I was answering his questions. Why shouldn’t, I thought. Then I realized what I had just said to myself. Before I would never have thought anything even remotely negative about what Kent said or did. But, at this moment I was wondering. I even noticed a flicker of out of character concern when I mentioned Henry and my thoughts about Laura, the niece.
Out of the nowhere he burst out, “I met Laura once at a restaurant while she was there with her uncle. I even thought of having her over to interview as my cleaning person. I guess it was a good idea that I didn’t. What do you think?”
Why did he tell me that? “It appears that you used your brilliant mind well and made your usual sound judgment,” I answered in a joshing manner. His foot crept further up my thigh and I shuddered. Strangely though, it didn’t stop me thinking about new reservations.
I continued to question, now spurned on with this new information. “What kind of person is she when she isn’t acting the churlish teen?”
“Oh, she is almost pleasant at times.” He said very quickly. And then again abruptly, “Almost finished with that sandwich?” He looked deeply into my eyes. And I felt that incredible yearning, even as he removed his foot.”

Why is it easy for me to believe that the union dominated Admin is behind all of this negative Publicity about Japanese cars. Like how much PR did you see about the recently proclaimed “Worst built car in America” – The Cadillac Escalade.

In reviewing Tea Party affairs newspapers invariably used the expression the “Conservative Tea Party Movement”, hoping obviously to lump them in the extreme or radical categories. It would be more accurate ( Accuracy is probably too much to ask from today’s’ highly agenda-ized “journalist”) if they said citizens for a return to common sense in America.

Every Census commercial I see just makes me madder and madder. They represent to me much of what is wrong with America. In your face assaults on American values and principles. For instance the most recent TV travesty showed what first to be a segment of our people in a city happily going about their chores and a daily activities. But, as the Camera pulled back the glimpse of a white grandmother type was soon overwhelmed by a total black populous with the announcer saying, “be sure to fill out your census or your Government won’t give you money.”

The Answer:
The famous French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre died April 15, 1980. He became a Marxist, but rejected much of communism especially with regard to its restrictions on the individuality of people. He was an avowed atheist yet he “Claimed that religion remained with him as an emotional commitment. He used religious writings and tended to regard religion in a positive light.” Three of his more famous quotes are; --“Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.” –“Hell is other people.” –“Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.”

The End:
I wonder what Sartre would have thought about the Census commercials?

The bats are cracking.

Today's Tids Issue 2,103
Opening Stuff:

Today is one of those relatively uncelebrated but essential days in US historical dietary lore. It is “1/2 Price Peeps” day. And fortunately for the first time in years the lines will be short as most people are standing in line for iPads. Peeps are better. Espcailly…those new chocolate covered little cluckers.

Did you hear about the burglar who got away with a big haul of jewelry with leaving any clues or evidence behind? It was known as a stainless steal.

How about that Abby Sunderlund! The able 16 year old sailor turned the corner on her challenging solo around the world sailing journey by going around the treacherous Cape Horn on Thursday. If you like bravery and courage mixed with superior sailing skills you have to tune in to this drama. Follow her at http://www.abbysunderland.com/ She is currently heading north and is just a bit southeast of the Falklands. Let’s hope the Brits and Gouchos don’t decide to start a little skirmish.

The Question:
Through the haze of alcohol, under clouds of homosexuality and stormy accusations of allegiances with communists, Eugene O’Neill still managed to write and become a beloved US playwright. Name five of his greatest plays.

By now you know that last night marked the opening day of baseball in Boston. Think about how dumb this is for a moment. Planning to open up with a night baseball game in New England…where early April nighttime temps are typically in the 40’s and even the 30’s. This is not for the fans but for the TV networks and the big money. This is just one more example of misguided leadership in America. Baseball isn’t played on sandlots any more.

John McPherson suggests that a good way to ameliorate the prison over crowding problem is to convict smaller criminals.

Does the phrase “Fair Share” in census commercials bother you as much as it does me? It says to me that the Government actually thinks it is their money they are distributing. Actually it’s our money, yours and mine plus a trillion or so in new debt that they are returning.

While we’re on the census lets talk a second about diversity and unification. I believe the positive effects of diversity improve when everybody is the same. As you may know the census contains a racial, ethnic check-off. The more we differentiate the more we disrupt the strength of diversity. The census is becoming a tool of divisiveness.

Licensing for salt water fishing just has to be unconstitutional…somehow. Isn’t the ultimate freedom walking to waters edge, wavelets lapping at your ankles, smelling the salt spray and throwing a lure 30-40 yards out into the ocean? Without worrying at what moment you will be brought down in a hail of bullets from an over-aggressive power mad government watch dog.

He who throws mud loses ground.

I have listened to all the reports and expert opinions and read many others about iPad, and I’ll be darned if I can see any reason at all to buy one. Call; me a Luddite…but a Luddite with $500+ still in his pocket.

You know you are getting old when friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes and you are in your bare feet. It’s a Florida thing.

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 63 continues.
(Note, this episode picks up from last Wednesday. Thursday’s was a complete April Fool joke, but I have to admit, I have thought of going that route.)
--“What was your meeting like?” I continued to push, but gently.
Paul took his time. While blessed or cursed with unbounded energy (I’m not sure which), he had this ability to be very thoughtful. To slow his brain when needed. He was hard to catch off guard. Maybe we were too alike that way. “I’ll start at the beginning,” he began. “He kept me off balance all of the time. Not that he shook me, but he made me feel uncomfortable. And assured all those in the room that he was in charge. As I got to know him, especially in private, I found him easy to talk to and interested in mutual progress. Now that is either his nature, or was because he saw how much we could contribute. I started to realize that he needed what we had, which was the ability to provide technology that operated beyond where they were in the lab process at all times.”
“So…” I interrupted.
“Jeez…you sound just like him!” Paul laughingly editorialized. That stopped me a moment. Me like Kent. Hey, I’m bubbly and effervescent, aren’t I? “Well,” he smiled again at me, “the ‘so’ is that he wasn’t surprised at the acquisition of human test results as a result of the Bromsky affair. Sally, do you know Sally?” he continued without my answer, “Sally was amazed at how conforming my GenInst products were at the time of the introduction of overwhelming new, advanced data.
“But, you were already working with Bromsky?” I asked. “So that figures,” I surmised. “So what exactly are you telling me Paul?” I waited as he focused.
“I’m saying I think he is much more complicated than he appears. I’m saying that while there are apparent answers, something all of a sudden doesn’t feel quite as right about Mr. Middleton.”
I just looked at him. Maybe I should talk to Sally Orstein. How would I do that without alerting Kent.

I have a new nick name for the President – The great Mocker! Isn’t he sounding a bit juvenile these days as he ridicules the so-called opposition who just happen to be about 55-60% of loving Americans. It’s one thing to disagree, but to insult honest people when you are the leader and supposed unifier is unconscionable in a civilized country. It’s one thing to question. But it is unbecoming of a leader of free country to demean. Why would the nation want to come together under this man? Civility comes from the top.

The Prez wonders why so many are drifting away from him. His attempts at bi-partisanship have been superficial and blatantly self serving. The Great Mocker is just too political to be a leader.

All of a sudden Iraq is looking very unstable. That execution style mass assassination over the weekend allegedly groups sympathetic to al-Qaida are taking advantage of the wrangling by the two top vote getters. And by wearing Iraqi police and US Military uniforms, they are obviously try create doubt and resentment to what appeared to be nice progress in the country.

Did you hear about the young boy who kept calling out to his parents “Breaking News on CNN!” But when they arrived there was never anything to be seen. He became known as the boy who cried Wolf Blitzer.

The Answer:
Imagine the greatness of O’Neill despite the negatives. The Tids guy only has grammatical insubordination going against him. Eugene’s first published play was Beyond the Horizon which won the Pulitzer…and that wasn’t even one of his best known efforts. You have heard of Anna Christie, Desire Under the Elms, Strange Interlude, Morning Becomes Electra, Ah, Wilderness, The Iceman Cometh, Emperor Jones, A Long Days Journey into Night and A moon for the Misbegotten.

Final Thought:
Uranium casually being mined in Africa without oversight is a scary thing. Almost as scary as CVS being out of Peeps when you reach the front of the line. Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

Good stocks in small coves.

Today's Tids Issue 2,088
Opening Stuff:

The stock markets are sluggish right now and may continue that way for a while. Most of the 70% stock price gain has merely corrected an over reaction 35% drain a year and a half ago. The market is still short of highs by 400 points!. And the news that in Feb investors were pulling out of stock mutual’s in favor of the bond variety indicates slower going for the stock markets. There will probably be little general rising on incoming tides as was the case in recent history. If you want stocks to work for you, you will have to do the work picking winners and losers based on sound financial data as opposed to whimsical news. If I was rich, these words would be more meaningful. But it’s the way I see it.

Last night I had a big decision to make: Fill out my Census report, or do my NCAA Bracketeering. I chose the brackets. This March annual is creeping right up there with mom, Chevrolet and apple pie. And I figure, from what I’ve been seeing in the Government census commercials, that the census has just become the basis for the justifying the picking of citizen’s pockets.

The rioters in Greece are visible proof that economies based on out of control debt will expire over time. The state workers are rioting to preserve income and benefits that they should lose and which would never would have been available if achieved under realistic economic standards. Its like generations today in America expect everything because they were given everything through debt accumulation. Debt masks reality. Even in this US economy, the greatest in history some say, its current levels would never have been achievable if people didn’t go deeply into debt spending way more than they could afford. And it appears that the only way back to old levels is to encourage reckless behavior again.

Did you hear about the immigrant from Warsaw who was concerned that his new American wife was going to poison him to death when he found a bottle in the medicine chest labeled Polish Remover.

The story line read “(Dakota) Fanning is trying to shed her good girl image with ‘The Runaways’…” What’s wrong with a “good girl” image? Does this mean she will be found dead in a seedy motel room in five years? Seems to be the trend. Maybe like Lindsay, she can get a couple of states to pay her royalties for the use of the name. I wish her the best on her move to the dark side, but I have to wonder why?

Cars that are “hard to keep on the lot” probably have defective brakes.

You know that old phrase, “Kids don’t have the sense to come in out of the rain.”? They still don’t.

The Novel:
Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 60 continues. –“Sarah, great to see you. And wonderful to see you walking so spryly!” Isabelle was all aglow about my recovery. It’s one of the reasons I liked her from the start – she is genuine in addition to being smart and aware.
“I’m not quite there yet,” I replied smilingly, “But being here with you is going to be my best medicine to date.” I pulled out a chair to the right of her desk and sat. I always sat to the right of clients when I their offices. “I expect Bill, Gloria and Jeff have been taking good care of their new favorite client?” Izzy smiled, but she could never be overwhelmed by flattery.
“They have been excellent. Our financial and accounting guys think highly of them. We are totally happy to be a part of your fine company family.” She couldn’t flatter me either. “But, that is ongoing and going well. I know you want to talk about our technology and the Bromsky affair. Maybe I should call Kent Middleton into the meeting.” My heart leapt a bit. But then, I actually remained cool. Hmmmm.
“No, I’d like to talk to you alone.” I’ve had a couple of weeks to think about this mess by myself. I’ve had all of the input I need form Kent. It is Izzy I need to hear from. I can’t have potential fallout from the scam jeopardizing our investment. I have a feeling that Kent loves the data that fell out of the heavens into his team’s lap. “What do…” I started, when I heard a soft rap on the door, “I heard you were in the building.” I turned and saw a smiling Kent. I smiled. My body stiffened.

Back to More Stuff Again:

Peter Graves entertained us in many ways, from Mission Impossible to comedic adventures like Airplane. But, what I liked what I just learned about this brother of Gunsmoke’’s James Arness was that when he died he was still married to his college sweetheart of 60 years, Joan Endress. See, Hollywood isn’t totally corruptive. I guess it depends on the hearts of the players.

And then there is Charlie Sheen who yesterday pleaded Not Guilty to domestic abuse. And I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if his confidence came from knowing that his mate wouldn’t talk knowing that if she did she’d have at least have two broken legs.

Back in the 80’s when the “brightest” were touting the new and exciting service economy, didn’t they realize that they were also the dooming the viability of the health care system.

American analysts and economists based in outposts like Hong Kong and Shanghai are seeing signs coming from the US admin of a potential trade war. And they are reporting distress about from officials inside China and other Asian countries. It isn’t a secret that Big Labor has been very upset at so little being delivered for their big $400 Million investment in the 0-Man election. Stay tuned on this one.

The Answer:
First to my mind was megahit My Fair Lady based on “Pygmalion”. Then there was West Side Story loosely based on “Romeo and Juliet” and Kiss Me Kate based on “The Taming of the Shrew”. Wicked is based on the book “Wizard of Oz”. Then there are the big hits with the same title as famous books. The hugest of these is Les Miserable’s. Also in that category is Oliver, Dracula and Little Women. Interestingly, Cats was based on a collection of poems by T.S. Elliot – “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.”

The Small, Tidy Finale':

The band are my friends.

Today's Tids Issue 2,065
Opening Stuff:

I find it more interesting going to music concerts where the bands are unknown as opposed to paying tons for a big name. Often the results are incredibly satisfying, especially if you go to a place known for bringing in good talent. It is an adventure in discovery. You sit there waiting, “what have I gotten my self into”. The band ambles up on to the stage. “Looks like any other band”. They play, and you muse, “I don’t think this is what I expected”. “But, they are talented”, you concede. The various members talk to you between songs, and you start to like them as people. You get into the power of the music, and you become part of the excitement. It feels good. By the end of the evening you are examining them minutely…the way they move their fingers over strings. The facial expressions…the way they interact with each other. Now they are distant relations. And by the time you leave they are like new friends. And you are close to them. Maybe they’ll say “Hi!” if I meet them on the street. Or go to another concert.

A US Census commercial says “Help fill out the census so you can get money from the government to make your town better.” How un-American is that statement? How about keeping the money the town so the towns and the people can do it themselves? Is the census the only way people can get back what was there’s in the first place? Is this Admin approved commercial an indication of socialist thinking?

Back To Stuff:

The new life saving exercise, Continuous Chest Compression CPR seems to work and you don’t have to breathe into a stranger’s mouth. It’s simple, but you must do it right. If someone collapses due to cardiac arrest, immediately dial 911. Position the victim back down on the floor. Place the heel of one hand on the other and the heel of the bottom hand on the sternum (Center of chest), Lock elbows and begin compressions at rate of 100/min. Raise heel off chest after each compression. The object is to force blood to the brain. Once it reaches the brain, continuous pressure will keep it there. It is best to set up a relay team to make sure compressions are totally continuous until EMT’s arrive. In the case of drowning or drug overdose, it will require two mouth-to-mouths after 30 compressions.

Snakes live in tropical rain forests. I don’t like snakes.

You have probably seen a lot about Danika Patrick’s first big NASCAR effort. Most of the stuff I have read relates to her unfortunate accident, portraying her as a “victim” being in the wrong palce at the wrong time. The facts from a major behind the scenes player in NASCAR are that she was not ready for the big Nationwide series yet. Early in the race it was noted that she had a lot of trouble drafting, and became noticeably unnerved according to radio conversations when she encountered “dirty air” when riding close on the tail of the car in front. This caused her to fall back in the pack, although she was continually urged by her crew to claw back up. Each time falling behind, and finally into the morass that caused her game ending accident. It was noted that any driver coming out of Indy or road racing needs time, a lot of time, for the transition. The promoters jumped the gun on this one.

The currently “Chic” Trader Joe’s food emporium has a line of “Reduced Guilt” brand name products including Brownies and Potato Chips. I can’t remember the last time I felt guilt eating something that tastes good.

Let’s hope all of America doesn’t resemble some interesting economic facts just released about Rhode Island. In the 1999-2009 decade 22,900 jobs were gained and 16,900 (74%) of those were in the deficit building areas of Health and social assistance and education. Of the 41,100 lost jobs, 35,500 (86%) were in the traditional economy drivers, manufacturing and retail. This is not a plan for a growth economy. It’s a plan for draining public treasuries.

The new most powerful person in that depressed state of RI, Speaker of the House Gordon Fox, vowed that his primary drive will be Jobs, jobs, jobs. His first key appointment was a woman to head the Labor committee who has been a major player in the state AFL/CIO. Labor’s stranglehold on the operation of the state is one of the major reasons why good companies with real jobs in growth industries don’t come in or, if here, leave.

Has there ever been a meaner little kid than Lucy Van Pelt?

“Sucker born every minute” Department:
Why would anybody spend good money for a seat in outer Slambovia in a 90,000 seat stadium to watch a bad basketball game which you probably can’t see anyhow?

The Novel:

Through the Same Eyes: Chapter 55. –A lot has happened during the past few days. Isabelle called me as soon as Henry left with the state police detectives. She was cold, and the meeting that followed started out icier than the Northwest Passage in January. Mainly, she was upset with me for not keeping her in the loop about my suspicions about Bromsky. She was also disheartened to learn from Henry that I had worked closely with Sarah who just happened to be the most important person for the financial future for BiEmbryo. I told her that it was just a casual coincidence. I reminded her that we were only looking into a series of fairly innocuous acts of vandalism. It was only at the last that they led us to Bromsky. I listened for about ten minutes while she aired out all of her irritation. I have to admit, she was right about every little innuendo, except Sarah and my relationship. Which is the only thing that matters. When she finally relaxed a little. She said, “Jack Wiley will be here at 4:00. He called to tell me what Sarah Durham had said, and about her recommendation that we move forward together. I decided to stop playing hard to get and take the offer before everything broke apart. I need you here then.” I said, “Good.” She finally smiled, a little…”Ever the wordsmith, eh Middleton.”

More Stuff Again:

In the “Tids Saturday Shorts” review of the Olympic’s opening ceremonies: “While on the subject of commercials, there was one that was particularly offensive because of the circumstances. Immediately following the gut wrenching videos showing the death of Luger Nodar, a RI furniture company selling mattresses, Cardi Brothers, showed in a cartoon ad the three owners bobsledding and one dozing off ultimately causing an accident eerily similar to the luge tragedy. Note: Cardi’s is a very good bunch of people, but somebody wasn’t watching the store.” On Sunday, the Cardi Company ran a full page ad acknowledging the horrible coincidence and sincerely apologized. But that is just the way the Cardi organization has always been – They care.

I think what will become apparent as the new US and Allies military attacks in Marjah continue is that fewer and fewer Taliban will be found. This gorilla style army seems to know overwhelming odds when they see it. Better to scoot and live to fight another day. Which, as far they should be able to determine according to the broadly announced Obama strategy, will be a bout a year or so from around now.

“House”, “24” and “Damages” are a pretty good Monday night 1,2,3 punch!

Dick Francis kept me interested page after page, book after book. When in doubt, I always reached for a Francis mystery. He died yesterday at his home in The Caymans at the age of 89. His son will carry on.

The Answer:

Of course , for some reason PC thought it better to stop honoring Washington and Lincoln and fete them all. Don’t ask me why. Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy were assassinated. Attempts were made on Jackson, T Roosevelt, FDR (Before inauguration), Truman, Nixon, Ford Carter, Reagan, HW Bush, Clinton and GW Bush. There were several attempts to get Obama before he was elected. It is rumored that both Zachary Taylor and Warren Harding were assassinated by food poisoning. Interestingly, Giuseppe Zangara, who killed the Chicago Mayor Cermack during what was believed the FDR attempt, was executed one short month after conviction. What ever happened to swift justice?

The End:

Is Uncle Sam the brother of the Father of our Country?
