The world needs a few good Doris Day Movies.

Today's Tids Issue 3,735
For Doris:

Remember back when almost most everybody learned from their parents: “If you don’t have something nice to say about a person, don’t say anything at all”. I always thought it was a pretty good guideline to live by. I think a lot of people did. I doubt with social media we’ll ever come close to that principle again. But, maybe Tweeters and Instagrammers and Facebookers could at least think about hurtfulness every once in a while. Of course, that recommendation for kind living was never meant to include politicians!

It’s hard to walk on the sunny side of the street when you read about two young Chicago teens bursting into another young teen’s home and shooting him to death over a pair of sneakers. People will rise to protest against guns, but I protest against any action that blurs the real problem, and getting to the crux of it, Why are kids  (And adults) killing each other willy-nilly lately with any weapon available including Knives, Guns and Automobiles. A lot of people think it is the new gloom and doom “entertainment” that normalizes anger and violence; political correctness that doesn’t acknowledge real problems in society. That’s the Wrong Track upon which many Americans think the country following into a chasm. Enabling and making excuses does not a great society make.

If there is one thing Trump should do right away, it’s to separate his presidency as far away from his businesses as humanly possible. He talked about on-going congressional investigations of Hillary. His ties to his business could be easily be grounds for impeachment, and certainly fodder for the haters.

The Question:
In what year did Microsoft introduce Windows?  Bonus: What was the name of the first child of the Mayflower born in America? Super Bonus: name the 3 most liberal and 3 most conservative media operations. (Note, the media were rated based on a Pew Research study of the opinions of the audiences. – far left, left, moderate, right and far right.)

The Headlines:
--3 Police Officers In Three Separate States Shot In Unprovoked Attacks.
--Stocks Up Across The Board; Potential Trade War Could Raise Consumer Prices Without Adding Jobs; Home Mortgage Interest Rates Creep Up; Will This Slow Homebuilding Industry?

--Obama-Putin Stares In Peru Chilling.
--Pope Francis Extends Catholic Priests’ Rights To Forgive Abortion.
--Mexico Prez Says He Would Sit with Trump To Modernize NAFTA.
--Dozens Killed In Kabul Mosque Killed By Suicide Bomber.

The people around here were horrified after reading the story of the woman in a wheelchair, who while gambling at 5:30 AM in a local casino last Friday was approached by a man who stole her wallet and pushed out of the chair to the floor -- “Gambling at 5:30 in the morning!” they gasped.

0-Man has been at his anti-Trump, anti-smooth transition best while traveling outside of the USA. What I want to know, with all of the seething anger that tis ex-Prez seems to be able to generate, where is it in regard to helpless, totally innocent police slaughtered in surprise attacks?

I love that new series on Netflix, The Crown. It is powerful and very entertaining. Episode Two’s transition scene from George to Elizabeth over the words of Winston Churchill was riveting, at least for this old Anglophile.

I never liked bars that served Measured pours. And I don’t like the new eateries with formula packaged sandwiches. Where are the personal relationships of yore. Back in the old days when America was great, you had delis who knew your likes and corner bars who took good care of you.

When you think about it, from what I have read about the Hillary campaign I’m finding it has remarkable similarities to the Edsel fiasco. It was the old case of “We know what you need whether you want it or not.” And in the Hill camp, they disregarded research that said exactly why people were upset and exactly what they wanted in a President.… like at Ford where the research told them exactly why USA people didn’t like the Edsel.

I think there may be a good novel in the story of the Newport RI born and bred Thomas Ince. Ince a movie producer, died mysteriously in 1924 while at his own 44th birthday party on the 264 foot yacht Oneida owned by Randolph Hearst. Hearst and his mistress were the hosts for a lavish movieland crowd that included many super stars of the day like Charlie Chaplin. Ince was very powerful in the movie business, having made over 600 movies and perfected mass production of films, especially Westerns. He was on the Yacht to sign an agreement with Hearst. While The LA Times and NYT said his death was from heart failure, a rumor about a bleeding head wound from gunshot took hold after Ince’s wife ran to Europe. Interested? I’ll have to work on that.

Actually, there have been three fictionalized versions of the tale: A novel by granddaughter Patricia Hearst – Murder at San Simeon. RKO 281, a movie about the making of Citizen Kane that has a scene where screen writer Mankiewitz and Orson Wells are talking of rumors about the “murder”. The Cats Meow is a 2001 version of Ince’s death. But, Hollywood is always in the mood for a sequel, especially when it is about them!

I doubt if there is anything that Trump can do that will keep the negatives coming from the left. Or from the media pouncing on them. Maybe real Democrats will tell the left to shut up…in a nice way of course.

Do you think that the cast Of Hamilton has been reading too much Fake News on social media sites?

Winter’s sleep: Yesterday brought to an end many of the sports events that seem to go on all year long. –You missed something if you didn’t see the end of the NASCAR final race. Daring Do by surefire winner to be Carl Edwards forced him into a wall, thus allowing ten great Jimmie Johnson to sneak by Busch and Logano for another crazy vestry…champ of the year. –Henryk Stenson didn’t win the final big Euro tour event but he won the overall Dubai Championship for of Europe’s tour. – Andy Murray beat the mighty Djokovic to end the year number one in the world of tennis. _Jordan Spieth won the Australian Open to end his year with a sneak preview of potentially a better year in 2017. – The last PGA had a five player playoff which was won Mackenzie Hughes over Villegas, Horschel, Norlander and Barber…8 minutes ago.

So now it is onto Football, Basketball and the winding down of the Fall sports like Soccer. Yesterday in the NCAA Soccer playoffs, #22 Providence College beat #1 Maryland in a super exciting comeback from 3 goals down victory.

By the way, did you read where the left in France is about to be toppled by a populist movement. I guess that‘s why 0-man didn’t visit Hollande during his last EU tour. One of the biggest issues there is the French concern about losing their national identify due to an uncontrolled influx of immigrants. The US has always had a strong identity with Immigrants, but not so chaotic as it is now with immigrants breaking laws to enter and their supporters seemingly oblivious to rules for a an orderly society.

The average age in the Saturday obit page was 81.7. That includes the three lowest ages of 41, 51 and 61 and at the high end, 8 ages of 90 or more among a total of 18. Just in case you are keeping track.

A new study by linked-In says that Diversity is a very low consideration for Venture Capitalists analyzing investment opportunities.

The Boston Lyric Opera Company is testing out a “Tweeting Section” so the performances will appeal to more millennials, obviously the audiences of the future. That sounds pretty sad to me. I personally think escaping form the garbage of the day is a great reason to go to any entertainment venue, unless of course it would be for Wanda Sykes.

It’s easy to pick on the youth because a lot of the news about them is typically about what they are doing wrong. But for every flashy news headline, there are hundreds, thousands of young people doing great things. There are many attending college who actually study and work hard for the future. There are high school grads who may have married their sweethearts, and are working their asses off to build a future for their family. Too often, the spotlights miss the targets.

Remember when “Happy Days” brought us back from the morass of the late 60’s early 70’s?

Former Canadian amateur champion Mackenzie Hughes looks like another of those young great golfers for the future. (BTW, I wrote tis before his win this morning at the final PGA event. He has been on te rise all year long.)

If your local newspapers like mine this morning, you will see them probably complaining about lack of cabinet picks so far. Just remember that their hero Obama didn’t not pick his first until November 24 and he was elected 4 days earlier than Trumperino. Frankly, I would just stop reading the news part of the media...and I will if I can find my comics and local sports elsewhere.

Speaking of hypocrisy, Jon Stuart came out against his liberal pals saying that they like the idea of characterizing all Trump supporters as racists, but go berserk when people they like are stereotyped by the ugly right. So basically, all of this anti this and anti that noise is pure ideological BS. Unfortunately, the Libs seem to have a bigger microphone and certainly more printers ink.

I think all aging Hippie-Americans own cute little gift shops for artisans run by the wives or hanger on girlfriends because the men are so wasted from decades of pot and other. OMG, I just stereotyped an entire Boomer segment. Shoot me.

The Answer:
It was in 1985 when Microsoft first introduced Windows to the world. Bonus: Peregrine White was born after The Mayflower moored off of what is now Provincetown Mass on the tip of Cape Cod. You have to wonder if Pollical Correctness advocates will march to change his last name in respect for diversity. Is that what they mean by “White Guilt”? Super Bonus: Ok, the two most way liberal audience media are New Yorker and Slate. Very close in Liberal ideology are Daily Show, The Guardian, Al Jazeera America, NPR, Colbert report and NY Times. On the furthest Right side you have Breitbart media, Limbaugh Show, The Blaze and Hannity and Beck Shows. Close to the far right is Drudge. Not so far left is BuzzFeed, PBS, BBC, Huffington Post, Washington Post, Economist and Politico. Not so far right is Fox News. The most left cable shows are MSNBC and CNN just ahead of NBC News. Just left of Center is CBS, Google, Bloomberg, ABC and USA Today. Just Right of center is Yahoo and WSJ. As you can see there are a couple of older programs on this list, but the overall survey is very interesting. And it may have changed with a large audience in mourning. Check out Political Polarization & Media Habits at Pew Research Center – Journalism and Media.

I have to admit that I began this Tids hoping to be positive and upbeat, walking along where the sun shines and rainbows signal hope. But, irrationality always gets me down.
