For Exhaling:
A
Providence Journal editorial page cartoon by Scott Stantus
shows an outline of the USA under a familiar hairpiece across the Northern
states, and the caption, “This is Huge.”
So,
we have marching in the streets by America’s so-called best
brightest who seem to have no idea about how the great American democracy
works. Or is this just what happens when you award trophies to all. “Whaaaaaaaa,
I didn’t get my way.”
The
bigotry of the academic and cultural elite was probably
best displayed by former SNL comedian Taran Killam who Tweeted “Rural = So
Stupid”. And that, my friends, is
exactly why Trump won. The people weren’t going to take it anymore. Taran
apologized profusely, but you knew he either believed it deeply or was echoing
the sentiments of his pals in the business.
But
the undercurrent is changing for sure. One of the new phenomena
is the constant decline of Dish and cable usage. It isn’t just casual, but a serious
threat to those industries as more and more of the youthful technological savvy
find ways to put everything through their smart phones or tablets in an effort
to save money…and be cool. So while the new ways to receive entertainment and
find savings in the near future, there is no doubt that the creators of content
will find new ways to get paid equivalent bucks in the long term. Unless, of
course, they all march In the streets.
The
Question:
In what year was customer dialed Long Distance phoning
first available? Bonus: Let’s think
baseball and get away from the political game. Tandem MVP and Cy Young winners
from the same team in the same season has happened 19 times. For example, the
last one was in 2013 with Detroit’s Max Scherzer and Miguel Cabrera. Name five
more.

Trump
sure looked like a guy who knew little about anything
and certainly at times was unable express clearly what he really knew. But, somehow
he figured out how to beat an opponent who had everything – a bigger Democrat
community, the unrestricted support of the press, a resume of experience in the
executive and legislative branches, super name recognition and a gender
identity that represented more than half of the population. So, I guess the President
elect must be kind of smart after all.
We’re
coming off a pretty good Pick-em’ week of 10-3
that brings ou record to This week could be a bear, with all but one game looking like a poser to me.
So, Balt should beat Cleve, but you have to figure that someday the Browns will
find a way. Not this Sunday. Atlanta is proving to be strong, but I’m going for
Philly to bounce back. Denver has D, but they are vulnerable right now, and NO
seems to improve each week under Drew Brees. Sticking my neck out for the home
team NO. I really believe Jax is capable of beating Houston, but Houston has
been finding a way. The Jets are hapless with a QB mystery, and the Rams are
just plain mysterious. I’ll go Rams. Carolina-KC is a big game, but I see the
Panthers hitting their stride. I just have little faith in Chi, and am not
secure in TB, but I’ll take the home team TB. Minn has no offense all of a
sudden. Who knows what the Skins have. Home team Skins. GB is another team that
seems to be missing something. Tenn can be great at home as the sounds of a
country Guitar wafts through the stadium, Tenn by cracky! San Diego is looking
pretty good an even though Miami has been much better, SD at home is my choice.
Arizona should beat SF who still can’t get off their knees. Pitt-Dallas will be
a war, and I’m taking the Steelers to end the Cowboy streak.( Romo to come in
and throw last minute interception.) NE could easily lose to Seattle, but I’m going
with my heart, and because Richard Sherman is annoying me. On Monday. The Giants should take Cinn. This week could be
great, or an outright disaster.
You
have to figure that Political science curricular
in colleges across the land are scurrying to add a new course: “Trump 101”
I
haven’t heard any commentator say that a lot of good intelligent
people voted against Hillary mainly because of the Supreme Court. In fact, many
of the people I know have written saying that was the reason, pure and simple.
A lot of people just plain voted for the Supreme Court.
I
doubt if you’ll ever see me moving to Cook County
Ill (Chi), Boulder Colorado, or San Fran, Oakland and Albany Cal. Those cities
just passed laws adding taxes to soda pop.
Marching in the
streets is the way they do it in chaotic countries with no rational,
protected, respected, Constitution. Is this where progressive agitators are taking
us?
Have
you noticed by the voting maps that the bi-coastal first
line of defense against foreign aggression are Liberally dominated? Welcome to
the USA, Ali – nice backpack you have.”
To
many who don’t take everything literally, Trump’s ”Wall” is a
metaphor.
A
woman running for City Council here who I voted against
because she wants to ban plastic bags, won. Now I have to go out and march in
the streets.
SNL
Live troopers are probably despondent wondering why all of their
efforts to promote and support Hillary didn’t quite work out. It is because
most of the people who liked what Trump said about them being forgotten, don’t
a-watch SNL.
If
more people relied less on Big government for daily
living, there would be next to no anguish over the election of a new president.
Daily business and activities with less regulation would move smoothly from
presidency to presidency. In other words, life goes on if you keep your head
out of Washington DC.
The
Answer:
People in the USA began dialing Long Distance by
themselves in 1951. Most people were marching in the streets as they saw their
phone number increase from sometimes 4 numbers, to 10. Bonus: My favorite and only memory of a same year tandem is i967
with Red Sox Yaz and Jim Lomborg. The first one was in 1957 with two super
stars Milwaukee Braves Hank Aaron and Warren Spahn taking the honors. I was
living in Pittsburgh and rooting against the Ya, Ya, Ya…(WYKWIM)… in the
greatest of all World Series (Sorry Cubs-Indians) when Vernon Law and Dick
Groat won it. Some other favorites of mine were Phillies Mike Schmidt and Steve
Carlton, Cubs Ryne Sandberg and Rick Sutcliffe. How about Roger Maris and
Whitey Ford, the wonderful Nellie Fox and Early Wynn, Maury Wills and Don
Drysdale, Steve Garvey and Mike Marshall, Robin Yount and Pete Vukovich, Kirk
Gibson and Orel Hershiser, Barry Bonds and Doug Drabek, Ricky Henderson and Bob
Welch, Terry Pendleton and Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas and Jack McDowell, Miguel
Tajada and Barry Zito and Albert Pujols and Chris Carpenter. There’s a few Hall
of Famers in there.
There’s
an analysis of the recent election going around that
reads like this: Trump supporters took him seriously but not literally. While
the Hillary supporters and media took him literally but not seriously
.
Frankly,
all I care about is that the Patriots are back on the
tube this Sunday. I hate the Bye Week. Want to join me in a march?
