Flowers in May, Tra-La:
Nasturtiums.
People talk of roses on cottages grey and daisies in fields green; Chrysanthemums
and dahlias, large puffy balls for fall, a colorful scheme. Iris come early and
petunias come to stay. But the most beautiful of all, some would say, is the colorful
nasturtium with large leaves of subtle green. Let’s hear it for flowers all,
let appreciation ring, but don’t forget the nasturtiums when planting this
spring.
BTW,
around here, May 17th always seemed like the best day to start planting
flowers again.
The
Big Bang Theory ended forever last night. It wasn’t
that interesting.
Freedom
if the press, whether reporting or commenting on your
side or not, is certainly important in controlling truth in government. But, journalists
as reporters must not vary from the truth whether they like the truth or not. Yesterday, acknowledged super-anti-Trump reporter
Acosta rewrote the president’s actual words to meet the needs of his own defamatory
crusade. Peter Zenger would be rolling down his desk top.
One
of the great dangers to citizens of any government entity is
the dreaded “General Fund”.
Summer
can‘t be to far away. Cars with loud thumping music through open
windows are coming to town. Bah-boom, bah-boom, bah-boom…
Lincoln
did many good things. But, thinking before acting may have been the best that
he contributed. A lost art.
The
Question:
With the death of Doris day, I decided to see how
she ranked among the top 100 all-time best actresses. Name your top ten.

An
old trusty computer or lap top may be just prefect
for many who don’t do much with them. But new technology demands are way beyond
the capabilities of some older Microsoft staples and earlier hardware. The real
issue is in security. And specifically, on-line banking, where banks will refuse
to allow individuals to perform banking operations using old software just not capable
of merging with newer, more stringent bank security systems. I suspect that
most people can live quite nicely without the best in pixels or super
tecno-gizmos, but it is what you can’t see is apparently what you really need. Obsolescence
will bring me down.
Being
honest in media isn’t good enough for those who don’t
want you to be honest about what they don’t like.
I
have read this past week about art sales of $95 Million and
$110 Million. Is art really that valuable, or do people with more money than
they can spend just bump up the prices in a very expensve parlor game.
The
only thing I really know for sure sifting through the news
about immigration, is that the Left really hates it when you explain that there
is a big difference between immigration and unlawful entry into this grand old fair-minded
country.
Just
in case you missed it, the current immigration quota rule
has it 12% based on needed skills versus 66% family ties. The new plan would have
it 57% skills versus 33% family ties.
How
much of the business doings we read to justify reasons for markets
rising or falling, is investor created excuses to buy or sell. And most times
it appears to sell for profit taking after a run-up.
Recreational
marijuana company sales aren’t as high as people had imagined.
The market is a little hazy now after an early runup as most of the big players
are down or moving sideways.
There
are thirteen horses in the Preakness tomorrow. That’s a lot
for this second leg of the Triple crown which will be meaningless this year for
those who like the thrill of the threepeat chase. The favorite Improbable at 5-2. Others are #1 post
position War of Will 4-1, Anothertwistafate 6-1, Alwaysmining 8-1 and Owendale
10-1.
Note:
Gary and Mary West who Owned Maximum Security the disqualified Derby winner are
not only withholding that good horse but even a better one, Game Winner. Game
Winner was the favorite in the KD before it was scratched due to a cough. I thought
that might be a big attraction in the Preakness, but the Wests are not real
happy with racing authorities these days.
The
anti-Christian crowd must hate the Western NHL Playoff
between Saint Louis and San Jose.
That
new GMC pickup truck tailgate sure looks like it has a lot of
moving parts which could go wrong over time.

Between the Lines Movie Reviews:
--Wick fans will like the new One – John Wick:
Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Super assassin Wick after killing a member of the international
assassin’s guild has a million-dollar price put on his head is pursued by all of
the most ruthless hit men and women. Lots of excitement. Non-stop action.
--Art House movie fans like The Third Wife. Its about
a 14-year-old Vietnam girl who becomes the third wife of a wealthy land owner. Her
path to status is having a baby boy. Upon learning of her pregnancy, she has
hope. But she also learns the brutal truth that the options to her are few and far
between.
I’m thinking “Lassie Come Home” when I see promos
for A Dog’s Journey. Baily is happy at home roaming on his farm and with his pal
Ethan. Baily’s new playmate CJ is taken away, and Bailey begins a lovable journey
to find her. Probably will inspire many a happy tear.
--You have seen similar tales like “the Sun is Also
a Star”, where a of boy chases reluctant but interested girl often. A college bound
Daniel meets a Jamaica born pragmatist Natashia in busy NYC. Sparks fly and Dan
is sure this is it, but Natashia is busy fighting her family’s deportation. (Ut
O – A PolRomCom) The big haunting question is: Are our lives determined by preordained
fate or random events in the universe.
The
Answer:
Most lists are generational, because young people
with computers even in their 40’s didn’t live in the 1960’s or earlier. But, this
list seems pretty fair, although there were a few surprises of people ranked
lower than I thought reasonable. Number one was Meryl Streep followed by Cate Blanchett,
Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Bette Davis, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench,
Maggie Smith, Vivien Leigh and Jodie Foster. The next 15 are Ingrid Bergman,
Elizabeth Taylor, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Kathy Bates, Susan Sarandon,
Julie Andrews, Glenn Close, Jessica Lang, Sally Field, Sigourney Weaver,
Julianne Moore, Helena Bonham Carter, Sandra Bullock and at #25 Frances
McDormand. Grace Kelly was only #32. Deborah Kerr was #77. At #87, Doris Day
was in between Vanessa Redgrave and Winona Ryder. Shirly Temple was #90. 96 through
100 were Juliette Binoche, Claudette Colbert, Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johansson
and at #100, Myrna Loy, who was super popular in her day.
I
think we need a funny ending. But, the thought of
flowers has my mind vegging.
Eliza
Doolittle was petaling her wares. Lately her business has
blossomed, but she gave it up once and floral after she met Henry.
After
that flowerish, you probably feel lightheaded and a little
daisy.
See
you next week, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!
Let
your gardens grow Maryly, but don’t be contrary.
