Today's Tids Issue 4,498
Smiles all around:
Three is
nothing like a raging stormy day at the ocean. I always see an image of a hard
charging herd of powerful horses, with white, flowing manes.
A little
humility is always a good thing.
Let’s hear it
for all of the brand newborn great-granddaughters with pink cheeks and bright
eyes. And the happy smiling parents
Elizabeth Warren
walks into a restaurant: “I’d like a table”.”
Maître “D”: “No.”
Eliz: “Why Not?”.
MD: “You don’t have reservation”.
You saw
that one coming.
The Question:
What was the original name of the TV show Saturday Night
Live, and who was the first host? Bonus: Nobel is to name the Peace Prize
today. Name the American presidents who have own it.

Autumn in the East is often
a great time to open your wallet a little wider, suck it up and take a night or
two in Manhattan, and catch up on Broadway. The most popular shows there now are
#1 Hamilton (Still), followed by Lion King, Wicked, Beetlejuice, Moulin Rouge! The
Musical, Aladdin, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Book of Mormon and at #10, Phantom.
There is one about Harry Potter and Frozen is bringing smiles too. Tony winners
Dear Evan Hanson and Come From Away are still up there. There are several of those
tributes to singers like the Temptations, Tina Turner and Carol King. Mean Girls
is also getting a lot of love.
Tech company founders
in love always have to see a prenup lawyer first.
Tech company
“Founders in love”: It has a nice ring to it.
Maybe it could be a Broadway
musical.
Celebrity
in Psychoanalysis: Plasticman.
Terry Bridgewater
looks to me like the shoe in for NFL Comeback Player of the year. Not only has
he stepped in admirably for Drew Bees, he is also actually looking again like his
rookie sensation years before a serious injury brought him down. “He’ll never
be the same,” they were saying.
The first carpenter
to sail around the world relied on his screw. Shoot me.
A lot of the new high-tech alternative
energy industry opportunities generally rely heavily on government incentives
and subsidies. But even a government on a mission can’t abide continuing falling
sales and big losses. Now Dyson (The Vacuum Cleaned people) after investing $2.5
Billion in their EV biz, has just folded the operation after two years, saying they
couldn’t find a way to “make it commercially successful”. Even basking in the
glow of Elan Musk, and with regular injections of publicity, Tesla is still looking
at a muddy future. In China, where over one half of all EV’s are sold, their leading
EV maker NIO is having serious problems sustaining operations. And, the subsidizing
government is applying new pressures. Lifan Industry, another big EV maker in China,
concedes that “It is under liquidity pressure”. If development of this industry
is a problem in China where labor costs are low, it may be an impossibility in the
US. Ask Dynon, who may be looking at salvaging some of their investment in
Singapore instead of Bloomsburg Indiana.
I wrote that diatribe above
as it is just one more area of hopeful human endeavor which at least in this time
period of development, may be more a dream than a reality. Like with inefficient
wind and solar experiments currently operating outside of realistic cost
structures.
Love is like a bullet
in that the exit always causes the most damage.
In California they use solar power
in the day, and wind power at night, except when the high winds are fanning forest
fires, and they have to shut it down. Forcing the people to go to candles and lanterns
an fire places for warmth, which might cause forest fires.
Irony: Getting
pregnant on a pullout bed.
Historical analysis
shows clearly that Fed Actions more than anything coincides with highs and lows
of market activity.
I walked into a room yesterday
where on TV a fashion publicist was trying to make a case for wearing white
sneakers with business appropriate clothing. The woman said she used to find wearing
white sneakers abhorrent, but now she sees the desirability of white…because of
probably the sudden appearance of “green”. The problem in this mind is that the
follower any trend people will jump aboard to be fashionable, and I will only
see women with enormous appearing feet.
Reading Between the Lines Movie reviews:
--The big animated film of the week is the Adams Family,
and if you have enjoyed the many iterations of that family, you will enjoy this
one a lot. Good voices, lines and memories. Don’t pay attention to critics.
--The Critics don’t like The Gemini Man either, but
I would put this creative action thriller on my list. It is about Will Smith as
an elite assassin who is suddenly pursued by another younger hunter who seems to
know his every move.
--The Critics Fave this week is Parasite, a social
issues film that takes place in F\Korea. It’s about two families, one rich in
material things and the other rich in street smarts. Family #2 sees an
opportunity in tutoring and guiding the kids of rich family #1. #2 becomes and
Indispensable luxury.
The Answer:
SNL was originally “NBC Saturday Night” and the first
host was the incomparable George Carlin. Bonus: There were four US
presidents who won the Peace Prize, all Dems and one progressive party founder.
They were Barack Obama (Nobody still doesn’t know why), Jimmy Carter (12 years
after mediocre Presidency for “Untiring Efforts”), Woodrow Wilson (For Founding
The failed League of Nations) and Teddy Roosevelt For helping to end of the Russo-Japanese
War). Except for a few Chads, Gore would have been the fifth for climate change
rhetoric. Roosevelt considered by many to be a Center Left Repub, founded a Progressive
Party 4 years after his second term.
Somebody seeking power
is always trying to scare us all about something. I only worry about senseless wars, the crash of the stock market, the health of my family and friends, and continually
wonder why people look to politicians for solutions rather than themselves and
neighbors.
Never laugh
at your lover’s choices. You’re one of them.
Happy weekend,
E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!!
