Today's Tids Issue 4,508
Not again!
From political talk to Sports talk
to airhead talk and everything in-between, we are continually subject to repetition
of old warn out stories as each new Talk host thinks the world is waiting for
their opinion on some real or manufactured culture or political crisis. How
many “crises” turn out to be nothing more than exaggeration. We get too much of
everything because there are just too many outlets who need to fill up time and
space. And some real important stories are lost in the morass of opposing
opinions.
Have you noticed
that your Animal Crackers now are un caged? It’s PC at work again -- this time
it is Proper Cookies.
I promised my wife
I’d remember to bring her a Frappuccino but affogato.
Look it up.
In case you missed it,
the Ozone hole over Antarctica has shrunk to a record small size. Things happen
while endless discussions go on and on.
Also annoying are these interesting news
stories that fall into a black hole. Or is it a public
relation cover up.
The Question:
It has been clear that since 2009 there has been a serious
decline in some traditionally strong, and frankly quite important for a strong
society, USA college majors and a rapid movement to new fields. What have been the
rapidly declining majors and what are those growing significantly?

You have to wonder if the RNC
is silently polling Repubs for their opinions on viable Repub candidates in the
event the President gets impeached and somehow convicted.
I still get a lot
of great laughs from “Fresh off the Boat”.
Did you hear about the guy
who impressed his sensitive date by telling her he worked with animals? He was
a butcher.
I have to tell you I’m spending
much too much time looking for funny one-liners.
It appears that Obama Guru
David Axelrod has joined Establishment Democrats looking for possible backup candidates
for the faltering 12 they have. The list of names to step up voter enthusiasm is
growing and includes, Hillary, Kerry, Bloomberg, Eric Holder, Duval Patrick and
Sherrard Brown a popular Senator from Ohio. As Axelrod put it – we have two liberals
and Biden, who seems to be losing traction and donors. It may be a smoke stream,
but frankly I have been seeing this fro months. Oh well, it keeps everything interesting
and entertaining. And that’s all I care about – my entertainment.
Reading Between the Lines Movie Reviews:
--The Current Wars is a about competition between two
of America’s greatest inventors, Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, with a
lot of advice from Nikola Tesla on whether te standard for electricity should
be direct or alternating current. Get it. It’s a battle between two iconic US
inventors and an advisor form Italy. George favored Alternate because it was
more efficient and Thomas was for Direct because it was safer. Well, I worked
for Westinghouse in the early 1960s and that battle between the big W and GE
was still going on with intensity. So that’s why this is my movie list. A good
cast and an intriguing look at USA inventiveness.
--In Count Down, a woman who can predict when people
will die, sees her own death date come up. She now races to save herself from that
fate, and she only had three days to do it. They say this is fair, but I can
see myself watching it.
--Western Stars is, they say, a very good movie, but
it appears to be a promotion for Bruce Springsteen’s new album. Springsteen fans
will think it is a great movie.
--Critics don’t lie “Black and Blue’ but people do. It’s
about a rookie female cop who captures the murder of a young drug dealer on her
bodycam. She learns it was done by bad cops and now she is caught between criminals
and her own police force. Could be a pretty good thriller.
The Answer;
The major dropping the most is English at 25.5%.
Yikes. Now wonder we can’t communicate anymore. Next in decline is Philosophy
and Religion (22%) Now wonder we can’t find our moral compass. The next big two
on the declining curve are Foreign Language (18.7%) so we can’t talk to foreigner
either; and Education 16.3%. We’re doomed. These are he new trendy majors: Health
Care (97.7%), Computer Science (88%), Engineering (67.8%), Math (55’2%) and Homeland
Security (42.6%)/ You can major in Homeland Security? It looks like the next generation
will have no feelings.
Homeland Security?
I should
major in proofreading.
I think that more people should
major in English. We are entering age of dis-enlightenment.
Frankly,
I tend to avoid stories that are overdone, unless I find something that can add
to the hubbub. This is rare.
Have a great weekend,
E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!!
