I'm invisible.

Today's Tids Issue 5,638

I didn't see it coming:

The world in the future could be unrecognizable for old dinosaurs like me, but we will still be dealing mainly with human emotions. The biggest problem with progress is always that. An Abigail Van Buren in some form will always have a job.

George Washington thought Isolationism was good idea and he had the broad Ocean barriers to help make it easier. The next big isolationist was Woodrow Willson. He soon found out after using that to get reelected that the head-in-the-sand-concept of leadership regarding world events was bad Idea as German aggression escalated, and the US was woefully unprepared for surprises. Those two were manly about war escapism. Now Trump would be the third to go isolationist, though economically. A populist Isolationist movement took hold during the depression 1930’s but FDR pushed to end it citing things like global shipping and increased activities of Japan in China.

“I was walking through the forest alone and a tree fell right in front of me. And I didn’t hear it.” --Steven Wright

I like the idea of isolationism – business being able to work within its own boundaries free of government intervention and involvement.

Mitzi Gaynor died today. I wonder if she was dancing at the time.

The Question:

What was the first US victory in the Revolutionary War? Who were the Generals?

There are a couple of key games this week in Tid’sPickin’ land and a lot of others are tough to call. Last week we were 11-3 which brings us to 57-36 ((61.3%). Tonight’s game is a bit disconcerting as it is Denver against NO. The Saints are riddled with injuries and their own former great coach as the Broncs roaring. I think Denver is healthierThe huge super interesting game this week is Minn against rivel Detroit. Minn has been the big surprise. We all expected a lot from Detroit, and they looked like their predictions last week walking over Dallas. I go Detroit. Another Highlight game is between last year's Superbowl combatants San Fran and KC. McCaffery isn’t coming back this week, so I go with the Magician and KC. Another game featuring two very good teams is GB and Houston. GB is solid and Houston looked like SB Champs last week against a weak NE. I'll take GB in the cold. Also, looking like an interesting game is Pitt and the Jets. Pitt has been an minor miracle team and the Jets have managed to get their coach fired. Pitt is doing it with duct tape, and I say it still sticks. Both Atlanta and Seattle have a lot to play for. Atlanta was supposed to be good and the seahawks are better than they are supposed to be.  I'm taking Atlanta, and I know I’ll hold my breath on this one.

Sunday’s first game is a lackluster affair in London between two One and five’s, the Pats hoping their prized rook catches fire and Jax looking for their golden maned Trevor Lawrence to find what he had.I go Jax.  Another who cares game could be Indy who can be good or bad against Miami which has been a big disappointment considering their premiere O players. I go Indy. Buffalo will struggle again, but will take Tenn. The great Toss-Up Game (TUG) is interstate rivalry Cinn and Cleveland. These two teams have both been disappointing, but the Browns have been more so. Cleveland. I go with the honorable QB, Burrow. Phil has been lackluster and the giants minus players have fought well, but I say Eagles. Washington will take Carolina, and the Rams will take Vegas. TB is pretty good, but Baltimore is better. The Chargers versus The Cardinals is the real mystery game of the week. I just don’t know. I’ll take the Chargers.

The ramifications of Economic isolationism are enormous. The object for heavy tariffs is to raise money for tax reductions and increase US manufacturing jobs; to go back to the 1880's when the NY Custom House was the revenue engine for the US government. Lower taxes would be nice if anybody could afford the now higher cost of American made products. Of course, you can get the cost of American manufactured products down if you went to Lights Out automation. Which obviously would result in the loss of US manufacturing jobs. So we are back to where we were. Economies work best when the Government steps away from meddling in capitalism. Economists across all the political spectrums do not like the idea of a tariff system that would alienate friendly countries add heavy inflation back into the US economy.

“I'm living on a one-way dead-end street. I don't know how I ever got there.”

The Answer:

The first US colonies victory in the Revolutionary War was at Saratoga. It changed everything. The generals were British loser John Burgoyne and US winner Horatio Gates. Ironically Bendict Arnold was cited or bravery in this battle.

Wow. How Mitzi could light up a stage.
