Today's Tids Issue 5627
Just when you think...:
Holy Doomsday Clock, Batman! What a day... Iran launches 180 cruise and ballistic missiles against Tel Aviv and the tough guy Dockworker's (ILU) Union Chief Harold Dagget tells the US economy to shove it. An expanding war in the Middle East and no economy at home is not a great combination for world peace and financial stability.
How about that state-of-the-art Iron Dome shooting down all those almost as good state of the art missiles before any damage was done. Modern High-tech wars look like a very expensive fireworks display without the colors. But it's good we can stop incoming missiles so well. Do you hear that, Kim.
Now, if we could only stop international hackers as efficiently.
I usually start this annual Oct 1 Tids with “Boo!” I promised myself I'd do something more original this year. But now, in light of the world mess, Boo doesn't seem so bad. I love getting into October. I liked September too, but October really is made for lovers as we not only see but feel all the succulent changes in nature. The trees begin turning and that stimulating iciness is a little more prevalent. Of course, Halloween sales started as July turned August and pumpkin spice is already past its peak and we aren't even there yet. Well, the seasons still change beautifully all by themselves without commercialism's assistance. So happy October everybody...from the heart. Santa is on his way.
The Question:
Jimmy Carter turned 100 yesterday Nice. He is the oldest living president ever. Who are the next five oldest at death after him
The Headlines:
Middle East, Dockworkers Have Wall Street Crying the Blues; Oil Prices Rise.
--Dock Workers Go on Strike in 14 Major Eastern US ports 36 Ports in Total; Dockworkers Want 77% Increase, and Most importantly No Automation or Else.
--VP Candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz in Debate Tonight.

So, if the threat of a Middle East war and the erosion of the global economy isn't enough, we have a VP debate tonight. It could be a good one as opposed to most VP debates. Vance is smart and should be able to hold his own against a flawed Walz, But JD’s problem is that mere verbal slips by him will Hyperboled out of sight by te national media. So I would caution him to be careful.
Did you ever watch Pete Rose play live? I did. The ballfield was electric when he was there. What a force he was. He didn’t do anything halfway, and unfortunately, in his gambling too. But he was one of the great ballplayers of all time, no question about that, He just was. He died last night at 83. Also dead at just 55 was an all-time good guy, NBA player, Dikembe Mutombo all-time leader in blocked shots. But he was so much more as a human being.
“Veni, Vidi, Velcro: I came, I saw, I stuck around.
The US Commerce secretary and former RI Governor Gena Raimondo when asked about the potential Longshoreman Strike, said among other things as she stumbled to answer basic questions about potential disastrous strike, “I have not been very focused on that...”: No, the Secretary admitted, she has been focused on being a surrogate for Kamala in an effort to get her elected.
With all of the above infecting the normally bright and sunny first day of October, and teh gravity of it all, we really also must focus on the people victimized by Helene. After all, that is what it is all about.
A good economist will look at all the world problems and say, there are no solutions, just tradeoffs. Unfortunately, politics doesn't look at it that way -- Its if I don’t win its nothing.
“A heifer cow is better than none.” The TPL has been booted! You might say, shoed away due to a worn-out soul.
Trump's misquote index is a little like the widening of the national debt. There comes a time when the gap is just too big to be made up.
The debate tonight has been considered to have had potential to rise above the humdrum VP debates of the past, But considering today's two huge events, it now seems rather small in comparison.
The Answer:
GHW Bush was next a 94+. After him we had Ford, Reagan, John Adams, Hoover, Truman, Madison, Jefferson and Nixon and Biden.
There certainly was a lot going on today except in the Tids. Tomorrow should be better if we still have a planet. As they say in Switzerland, “the lord alps those who alp themselves.”
