Looking back, and smiling.

Today's Tids Issue 5,422

Urgent for whom:

The worst thing about Winter is having to wear socks.

If you act upon reading a column in the newspaper or on the Net titled something like “Travel Trends” you will more than likely find yourself in a place that is too crowded and expensive.

It seems like we are in the IYF era of cultural rudeness – In your Face -- from athletes to activists to even kids with teachers.

Red Neck view of medical terms:

Dilate: To live long

The Question:

One of my favorite TV personalities was Mary Matlin. Who was she and what is she doing now.

The Headlines:

--Dow Pulled Down by Boeing and Caution; Nasdaq Higher; Investors waiting for CPI Numbers Thursday and Reports on Three Key Bank Stocks Later in Week – JP Morgan, Wells-Fargo and BoA

--Boeing 737 Max 9’s Grounded.

--Israel Stike Kills Key Hezbollah Commander in Lebanon.

--Secy Of Defense Austin's Odd Hospital Stay Undercuts Biden Admin’s Promise of Transparency.

--NFL Coaches Heads expected to Roll; Commander's Rivera First One to Go; Is Belichick Next?

--Portland Oregon Schoolteacher finds Blown off Boeing Door Plug in his Backyard.

While I complain about Prime taking over Thursday Night Football, the fact is that ratings there are through teh roof. In fact, football is hot and teh networks love it -- The fourteen top rated TV shows this past fall into winter were NFL games. It is obvious that the media powers that be really, really want streaming. Which means it is good for them. And TNF has proven they can get away with it and people will follow. So, this coming Saturday NBC is boasting that the Saturday night playoff game between Miami and KC Peacock TV exclusively. Like it is a cure for cancer. Yes, I think I'm going to miss a lot by not having enough subscriptions to streamers, or not having enough smart TVs in the house. This is another kind of surreptitious inflation.

Pelvis: A second cousin to Elvis.

I'm not surprised that Boeing shares slipped today, are you? You can safely cover-over extraneous doors in a house, but on a plane the structural integrity is a different story. I'm no expert but to me it seems that covered jet plane doors are holes waiting to happen.

Other than newscasters and weather people, most people here in RI thought was just an average snowstorm.

Node: I knew it.

I was rooting for Buffalo last night because I have really never liked the Dolphins and have an affinity to Buffalo. So now the playoffs are set with Buffalo coming on strong behind a QB possessed, Josh Allen to win the AFC East. This dropped Miami to #6 Seed. The Jags blew it bigtime enabling the Steelers to complete an anazing resurgence and gain a playoff spot. teh The top AFC seeding goes Ravens, Bills, Chiefs, Texans, Browns, Dolphins and Steelers. On the NFC side The Pack snuck in ahead of the Seahawks and Saints. The seeding there is 49’ers, Cowboys, Lions, Bucs, Eagles, Rams and Packers. The TidsPickers were 11-5 this weekend.

Before I move away from the gridiron, I watched the Dolphins-Bills and Pats-Jets games, and they looked like they were in entirely different leagues. The Pats are in trouble perhaps for years to come.

“It's the Economy, Stupid”. Yes, that little slogan gave us Bill Clinton, with a little help from Ross Perot and Rush Limbaugh who persecuted George Bush endlessly. Yes, it was 1992 that also gave us Hillary. Jay Leno took over th Late Show and his 4,600+ Clinton jokes tells us why he says the Bill/Hillary years were the “Golden Age of Comedy”. We also got the Mall of America in Minn, but in Paris, the Follies Bergere Hall closed. Microsoft released Windows 3.1 and the IBM Think pad went on sale. Smokers got the Nicotine Patch. Carlos Salinas, Brian Mulroney and George Bush signed NAFTA. Ross Perot Heard a whooshing sound. In Somalia a Civil War erupted and the US got caught in the mire. Remember “Blackhawk Down”? Hurricane Andrew smashed into Florda and was the most expensive Hurricane of the ages. And two of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in California rattled nerves. But all was not Lost as Barbie's “Dream House” was introduced to America. And a fairy tale ended as Charles and Daina separated. The US stopped silicone implants. and the US did not sign the Climate Treaty in Rio. Hmm, smaller breasts and global warming continues. The surprise movie was My Cousin Vinny. Also, popular and memorable today is A Few Good Men. The top movie of the year was “The Unforgiven”. A other favorites were Reservoir Dogs, The Crying Game and Alladin. And TV in 1992 was historic as we got yes, “Friends". Who knew how popular following a bunch of 20 something's in an apartment would be. We also got another huge favorite m "X-Files”. And how about a quirky little show with lots of odd but lovable characters – Seinfeld -- coming to the small screen. And then there was Frazier, too. Despite all that new stuff, the top 3 programs were Roseann, Home Improvement, Murphy Brown and Murder She Wrote. I guess among all teh non-descript (To me) songs of the year, I liked Billy Ray Cyrus and Achy Breaky Heart. I spent a lot of time driving around listening to conservative Talk Radio. And trying to find out how this computer thing fit into my life. And collecting CDs which I still refuse to toss in this era of streamed music. And the Patriots were worse than they were this year.

Terminal Illness: Getting sick at the airport.

Its time to start paying attention to the mood of the country and understanding factors that could continue or alter the road to the 2024 election. An RCP analyst Joe Concha suggests Biden is weak as approvals for key factors are extremely low -- Economy 37%, inflation 32%, Immigration 32% and Foreign Policy 35%. The writer expects those very low numbers will have his handlers redeploying the “Basement” strategy as part of his beat Trump campaign. Four factors could d push him back on top: A continuing improvement eth economy, the Pro-Abortion vote, a conviction of the Donald and an uneasy truce in Gaza (FYI: Just 16% of Michigan Arab and Muslim voters would vote for Joe B today.) So, there’s a little current thinking on the election to come.

Other than the feeble opening monologue, there was nothing whacky at the GG’s as big favorites Oppenheimer and Succussion won big. And Barbie lost surprisingly. The good news was that I forgot it was on and didn’t have to watch it.

I'm also thinking that the newly Promoted coaches AGT is going to be way over the top and unwatchable. It's too bad that some pretty good acts to be outshone by the judges.

The Answer:

Mary was of course the witty wife of James Carville. She was a great political analyst at the time and she and James had a great marriage even as they held 180-degree public political opinions. Mary belongs to the Libertarian party. Since 2005 she has been Chief Editor for the conservative “Threshhold Editions”. And she really likes being a mom.

My favorite song for 1992 was this country tune which just says to me, let’s find a good ole’ barn and go dancin;
