Squashed.

Today's Tids Issue 5,434

Butternut is in:

There are a lot of people among Repubs, indies and Dems souring on Biden that hoped a votable person would emerge as an alternative to Trump. But now there is deepening concern among high-ranking Republicans that people will stay away in November and not vote at all

All these streamers coming online trying to develop general audiences will eventually turn out to be another bunch of competitors for the TV ad dollar and many will just fade away. They are all just the same-ole in new clothes. And there will still be plenty of bad programming.

I like the lineup for the NFL playoffs.

One of the great things about not remembering what you ordered from Amazon is always getting surprise gifts at your front door.

The Question:

Who were the original 11Euro Nation Countries?

The Headlines:

--Markets Open Higher; Netflix Reports Strong Earnings and Subscriber Increases; IBM and Tesla Due to Report Today.

One of the great little thrills in life is getting an out of teh blue email from an old great friend you have heard from in a while.

I leapt into the emerging world of eCommerce in 1999. I was in the grasp of Microsoft and deeply in the maniacal world of Wall Street’s infatuation with anything DotCom. It was the beginning of the roar, that eventually and quickly became a sobbing pussycat. But I got smarter, and that is something. On the other hand, 1999 was the year where some people for some reason thought the world would end at Y2K. Yikes! But somehow we survived as we have survived so many overreactions over the years to dire predcitions of impending doom. Clinton didn't quite survive as he was impeached. but not found guilty in his trial. Phones were opening up new worlds for people, some of which were scary to trod within. Hurricane Floyd with 140 MPH winds closed down North Carolina. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, 2 18 yo students of Columbine (Colorado) High School, planned a bombing massacre, but the bombs failed. So, they set up sniper positions and still managed to kill twelve and and injure of over twenty-five more before committing suicide. It was the deadliest high school shooting in History and a precursor that could have inspired many more horrifying mass shootings to come. Yet all was not sad and forbidding. The Euro was created t enhance the joint European Economy. Over here the Dow leapt over 10K to 11,460 and eggs were still at 89 cents/doz. And to make life glorious, we got Sponge Bob Square Pants. And Americans were also oddly enthralled by the weird little movie, Blair Witch Project. Sixth Sense was grabber too. And a couple of movies became cult favorites, Austin Powers and Fight Club. Notting Hill was a favorite of mine as was Double Jeopardy and The Thomas Crown Affair. It was a good movie year On TV we had West Wing and the Sopranos of course. And a little comedy show called “Whose line is it Anyhow.” So, there I was as people feared Y2K, the oldest person by far in a youthful DotCom company wondering why the Language of MBA’s and Techno-wizards made simple sound so complex.

Then I got it, if you want to succeed in Business and make a lot of money, create an industry with new language that people don't understand.

I got a loaner while waiting for the servicing of my car. It was a Mini Cooper, EV. It was a joy to drive; no hedging there. Truly great. But it only has a 100-mile range battery. I guess the only state where it could fit in is in little Ole’ Rhode Island. And while watching energy consumption indicators I learned quickly not to run the heater while waiting in the car for someone. The alternative to freezing is walking home if the car runs out of charge.

And the EV “Fast” Charge took an hour. Patience is a virtue that any EV oner must possess.

The Answer:

The original 11 Euro Countries were Austria, Finland, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland and Portugal.

I was going to play the top song of 1999, “Believe” by Cher, to end this mess. But I didn't like it.

I was happy to see that Bradley Cooper got a lot of Oscar nominations including Best Actor for his pet project, Maestro. I really liked this early scene from his A Star is Born, so this is what you get today. By the way, the ending of this movie really bothered me. Not that it should matter to anybody.
