Looking for light.

Today's Tids Issue 5,983

 Where do we look now:

Crispy French Fries are overrated.

I thought I'd start by opening with a simple controversy. Most of the arguments on the world stage seem unfathomable to rational people.

I'm thinking of that painting on the Sistine Chapel ceiling and in particular that most familiar scene, the Creation of Adam; a beginning in the purity of innocence. A light ignited by love. And where are we today? How far away have too many gone? It’s sad to feel this on MLK day as political parties for their own benefits have created this divide among humans. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” --MLK Jr.

149 hours, 52 minutes go, Department:

BTW, elation is the norm up here in New England  probably Denver, LA and Seattle too. Yes, Affection for the beloved Pats is rapturous since last night. And, nerves are already developing for next week as the countdown begins. We will live in the agony of anticipation. Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.

One of those symphonies not played enough is Bruckner's 9th. It seems to bring a kind of peace this world needs.

The Question:

The Stock market is closed today in honor of MLK Jr. What are the other nine days this year when the market is closed?

The Headlines:

--America Celebrates MLK Jr. Day.

--Gold and Silver Prices Jump on Tariff Woes.

-- Europe Perplexed Over Greenland Threats.

--Pentagon Places 1500 Alaska Based Cold Weather Soldiers on Standby for Possible Use in Minnesota.

--Legendary Fashion Designer Valentino Dies at 93.

--Trump in Text to Norway PM Claims hes Pushing Greenland Because he didn't win Nobel Prize.

--Horrendous High Speed Train Crash in Spain Kills at Least 39

To me the real test of a French fry is the type of potato used inside the crispiness or sogginess. That’s where the flavor is.

So, the big college championship game is tonight. It will be heavily watched and ticket prices are through the roof! Where do people get that kind of money? Yikes! It has become a popular game to watch mainly because for many it doesn't feature one of the ho-hum big money schools from the SEC or the usual Big Ten leaders. But it does have the Cinderella Big Ten champ against the team many thought should have been left out in favor of Notre Dame-- Indiana and Miami. It should be a great battle, worth watching.

I read last weekend that Zoe Saldana is the highest grossing movie star of all time. Who? Did she sing and dance with Fred Astaire? Yes, folks, life is passing me by.

There are two kinds of people in America: Those who will love it when football season ends. And those who will have to be committed to an institution when it ends.

Speaking of potatoes, the enlightened RI legislators are pondering a bill that would eliminate the Mr. Potato Head license plate as a vindictive response to Hasbro moving to Boston. What they should be pondering is the fashioning of a bill is that will keep companies from moving away and enticing others to move in. How dim is the light in the state house.

Speaking of making things more palpable for business and, yes, the public too, the Governor seems to have proposed reducing the onerous subsides that make alternative energy minimally affordable. But the environmental organizations are deeply upset wanting the taxpayers to pay more for inefficiency.

As Ziggy said this morning when asked what flavor coffee he would like. “Coffee is a flavor,”

Invading Minnesota with an elite military group sounds quite unamerican to me. Paratroopers?

Did you know that as of December 31 2025, Minnesota was 38% Repub. 34% Dem and 25% Indy. If repubs are going to win in the future, pay attention to the broader interest of indies in every state. It will be better for all pf the country too.

It isnt whether or not the US needs Greenland, it's about whether or not one nation can violate the sovereignty of another nation just because they want something. Except of course if you are Russia.

Buffalo coach Sean McDermott is 73-27 since 2020l, That’s the best of all NFL coaches. He was just fired. Winning championships is the name of the game

Attacking blue states (or red states for Dems) just doesn't make sense considering that in most them the margin of difference is minimal, meaning many repubs are disadvantaged by Fed restrictions and or take-aways. “Either, or” is terrible philosophy.

Most people on diets want “Their Birthday suits taken in.” (Thanks to F&E)

The Answer:

Before MLK there is New Years Day. After MLK there is George Washingtons Birthday (Presidents Day), Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July Fourth Independence Day, Labor Day Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are a few half days like the Friday after T-Day or the day before Christmas,

I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”  MLK Jr.

We seem to have forgotten about judging people for who they are as humans. That is the sin of identity politics.

Amen.

Here is one of MLK’s favorite performers singing one of his favorite hymns.
