Today's Tids Issue 3,520
Opening Stuff:

Happy February everybody! There will be thousands of new, rare Birthday celebrations as the month becomes to an end on the 29th. It is an amazing month that celebrates pure romantic love and the simple uncluttered images of America the beautiful. My true lifelong hero George Washington, Abe who was honest and that little cherub who stimulates the fires of romance, rule! How can we go wrong in February?

Yes, tomorrow the old groundhog will come out and see or not see his shadow which will determine whether the Tids will continue for six more weeks to weigh down your happy life with burdensome political commentary, or return the good ole’ happy-go-lucky Tidster back to his enlightened, sensitive, romantic, lighthearted life --
Oh to sit contented upon a fluffy cloud.
To simply sense the warmth of my heart’s quest.
To feel the sun beyond that political shroud.
A world without harangues would suit me best.

We are quick to denounce ISIS for destroying historic artifacts, but somehow many applaud that righteous few when they cover up or remove historic statues from the public square.

Conservative icons like Santorum and Limbaugh are saying that Trump isn’t conservative. I never thought he was. Maybe that’s exactly why he is winning and could be standing in frigid DC next January 21with his right hand raised. Maybe too many people have seen what an extreme lefty in the White House for 7 years can do to sensibility, and in their minds an unwavering righty is no better. Maybe they really want someone with no apparent agenda, no ties to movements, with only a goal for an understanding America for all…and collaboration.

Cam Newton is easily one of the best quarterbacks I have ever seen. So why aren’t we talking about his prowess on the field. Why does ESPN think it is good journalism to batter us about his blackness for two weeks, instead of his greatness? I watch football to watch the game played well, and I don’t care what color skin is beneath the jerseys. I want to feel free to throw tomatoes at those who play poorly and extol excellence with confetti. Maybe it is Cam himself who started all of the superfluous talk with his own statement about how we have never seen Quarterbacking like his. Has he forgotten other game changers like Kordell Stuart and Randall Cunningham, or even way back when Roger Staubach and Fran Tarkington startled defensive coaches with their running? Yes, Newton may be a little too self focused, but he also may be the most gifted of all. A little respect for others would be nice. Maybe that’s why there is unnecessary controversy.

The Question:
Who is Norbert Leo Butz? Bonus: There have been a few stars who I believe generally pick good scripts that become movies I enjoy. Among them are Michael Caine, Hugh Grant and the magnificent Gene Hackman. Name five of Hackman’s best movies. Super Bonus: Name all of the Black QB’s who have been in super bowls. How many have won?

I find that the second concertos of composers is often their best This is especially true of Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

Evolutionists in an effort to determine the effects environment versus gene succession and enhancement did a study among various cultures throughout the world on what constitutes art. Overwhelmingly, all of the disparate cultures from African villages to New York City enclaves rejected abstract, or at least relegated it to the lowest standing of favorability. The clear winner hands down was Landscapes with Water, People and Animals. And research found that people prefer an artist’s painting of a landscape over a photograph of a similar landscape. The consensus conclusion is that what early tribes of African plains saw around them 10,000,000 years ago are still in our hearts and minds. Very intelligent and diligent evolutionary scientists have the same ability to draw conclusions for their own purposes as do those who are wary of the theories of evolution. To me, this proves that since the beginning of time people have always taken sides on issues, and we still do. That‘s my theory of evolution and I’m sticking by it.

You have to wonder if Trump will have any friends left in the media by the time he gets to facing probably Hillary for the big prize. He may think media people are fools, inconsequential and inept, but the average voter hears and reads what they say.

But I really like the Fourth of Beethoven! And, Saint Sans 1st is to me definitely better than his 2nd. And, Grieg got it right on #1. Most people think that Tchaikovsky and Brahms only wrote one Concerto because the number 1’s are played so often and are so memorable. But Tchai wrote 3. And Brahms, he wrote his second 22 years after his first and it is as great as his well known first effort. So, theories are fleeting. Shoot me.

Rob Gronkowski’s party bus may have a flat tire this year.

I really had to laugh when I saw the headline that said, “Good snack recipes for munching while watching the NFL Pro Bowl.” Watching?

It seems like every young couple wants an open floor plan. Some of the women say they think it is a good idea so their husbands can sit in the other rooms and watch them while they cook. Cute. Open formats may make rooms look bigger and brighter, but more important, actually to me a must have necessity for all homes, is a room with walls and a door where the voice of “Ellen” does not interfere with the sports programming of the day.

The movie Dirty Grandpa is the latest in a series of signals that tells me we are witnessing the decline and Fall of the American Empire.

And, that lately, Robert DiNiro on the marquis means “do not enter”.

There’s no truth to the rumor that Trump will appoint Michael Savage to Secretary of State.

Duh Statistics, Department:
The NFL announced on Saturday that the 2015 season saw a significant increase in concussions! Holy aspirin, Batman! Of course this is the first year when they had docs on the sidelines examining players wobbling off the field. Beware of statistics – they can cause higher taxes and ticket prices.

If I were ever to publish The Parking Lot, I would have to change several names as many of the descendants are still big in the town.

A lot of movies have become secularist sermons. There is societal pressure that’s says I’m supposed to like movie “X” or “Y”. The fact is I only turn on the TV or go to a movie to be entertained, and I don’t ever feel I’m wasting my time when I’m not in some kind of cultural learning experience. Whatever happened to simple comedies with real humor? Or nice little mysteries that keep you guessing and liking the characters.

Oh yeah, just yesterday I saw a trailer for a movie with the exclaiming adjectives, “…wonderful, essential…” Essential? Movies are essential?

Have you noticed how often as you get older that what people say is refreshing and new and I must to learn about, is in reality something in a new dress that I know already and have for years.

One of the new ironies in America is that all of those people who were chastised for protesting against Wal-Mart moving in, for predicting that it would be destroying their local economy, were right. Sadly, we now see Wal-Mart moving out and the shuttered main streets their arrival fostered now bleaker than ever. And all of those once happy people feel like they were kicked in the teeth. Often just sittin’ in the old rockin’ chair enjoying what you got is about as good as it gets.

The Parking Lot: Chapter 44.
She had become more comfortable with her English name Elizabeth living in the Hicks community. But, tonight as she ran looking for her angry husband, she felt more like Mulatta. Her innate instincts gained from so many years living with her tribe at waters edge were taking over, and starting to nudge out the anxiety she had felt when she looked up and saw Jeremiah gone.
The moonless night was made the froste even balcker. She couldn’t see, so she paused to listen for directional sounds. She heard something that sounded like a whimper beyond the dark bushes to her left. She stood and listened as the whimper became rapid intake of breath. She lurched through the bushes, scratching her arms. Her hearts topped as she saw Jeremiah lying against a large rock clutching his side near the heeling wound. She felt elation knowing that Jeremiah was not able to do something stupid to Howland, but fearful of what his exertion might do to him physically.
“Jeremiah,” she breathed out. His turned his head up and smiled that of an embarrassed man.
“Not so tough after all, am I?” Elizabeth felt her heart explode with that special kind of happiness a loved one feels, and she smiled broadly back! She reached down and he grasped her arm and hauled himself back up, anguished pain clearly on his face. He took a big breath and blew out; Now Elizabeth felt small tears around her eyes.
“Easy, Jeremiah, you’ll be just fine.” He put his arm around her shoulder and her strong knees pushed her up to meet his weight.  “One step at a time my love.” She urged him on, but her mind raced ahead.

The Answer:
Norbert Leo Butz is one of only nine actors in Broadway history to have won two Tony’s for Best Actor in a Musical. He must be quite the singing/dancing con-man because he won his Tony’s for “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Catch Me If You can”! Bonus: Hackman made it big in The French Connection, but I thought he was great in everything I saw him in – well maybe not The Royal Tannenbaums which I have started to watch 3 times and never made it past 20 minutes. Some say Unforgiven was his best, but I loved him a lot in Enemy of the State. The rest in “Best to Worst” order according to “The Ranker” website are Mississippi Burning, Hoosiers, The Firm, Crimson Tide, The Conversation, Bonnie and Clyde and Young Frankenstein. The next five are Runaway Jury, The Royal Tannenbaums, The Quick and the Dead, Superman and Behind Enemy Lines. Here’s the list of 75: http://www.ranker.com/list/gene-hackman-movies-and-films-and-filmography/reference  Double Bonus: The Black QB’s have been Steve NcNair, Doug Williams, Colin Kaspernick, Donavan McNabb and Russell Wison (2). Wilson and Williams won, with Williams getting the MVP in the 1988 version.

In case you are interested, the other 8 Two Tony Best Musical Actor winners are Phil Silvers, Zero Mostel, Richard Kiley, Robert Preston, Nathan Lane, George Rose, John Cullom and James Naughton.
