What thyself hath wrought.

Today's Tids Issue 5,041

Be Happy:

Bad stuff gets most of the headlines, but the vast majority of people are doing good things, finding ways to share love, open their hearts for others. Even though at times it doesn’t feel like it, people everywhere appreciate things. That’s just the way it is.

What don’t you ever do the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day? Travel! Yes… get in a car plane or train and go somewhere. Yet millions upon millions of Americas just don’t listen to themselves. But they always have plenty of time to complain about crowded roads and crowded terminals.

Let’s hear it for Dutch PM Mark Rutte who said yesterday: Rioters are “Idiots”. Finally, a leader who isn’t enabling insanity.

A perfectionist walked into a bar...apparently, the bar wasn’t set high enough.

The Question:

Name five of the great magazines of the 20th Century.

The Headlines:

--Tech Doubts Drag Markets Lower; Concerns Now Rise Over Reappointment Of Powell.

--Mobs of Criminal Looters Continue Aggressive “Smash And Grab” In California Shopping Districts.

--At Least 46 People Dead In Bulgaria Tourist Bus Crash.

--DC Reaches Highest Murder Rate Since 2003.

--WH Says US To Tap Into Strategic Oil Reserves.

--Great Britain To Honor MP David Amess At Westminster Today; Popular MP Was Murdered During Constituency Visit.

--US Warns Citizens Against Travel to Germany And Denmark; Covid 19 Rising There Again.

Let’s face it, there are just people who are professional protestors. That’s why such boosterism often makes no sense – they don’t really know why they are there. Too bad nobody actually analyses the true statistics about angry mobs. That they just take inane babbling as gospel.

Did you hear about the semi-colon that broke the law? He was given two consecutive sentences.

If you ever feel an outcast in society, just remember that the Vanderbilts were considered the unwashed nouveau riche by upper crust society led by Caroline Astor whose husband’s family made millions selling dead animal skins*.

Take your choice: Today is National “Cashew”, “Espresso” or “Eat a Cranberry” Day.

I never thought I’d see the day in America when major evidence of a growing, energetic economy was the building of a behemoth gas station complex.

I own the world's worst thesaurus. Not only is it awful, it's awful.

*Note: Actually Mrs. Astor’s family the Schermerhorns, were descendants of the original Dutch settlers and made their money in shipping. It turns out that a lot of super wealthy families lost most of theirs as heirs got too much into sipping.

Tonight and tomorrow, the media will locate angry people in airports complaining about the airlines. But, about 50 million people will have enjoyed safe and rather unencumbered flights, arriving happily at their destinations.

The best thing about good old days is that we were neither good nor old.

The Answer:

When I think back, I first think of Life, Look, Colliers and Saturday Evening Post. We had Atlantic Monthly, Harpers and The New Yorker. And it seems forever, National Geographic. For women there was Redbook, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Glamour, McCalls, and Vogue. Better Homes and Gardens and House Beautiful were quite popular too. Sunset was big out west and the came east. And Southern Living moved up the coast. The big ones in news were Time, Newsweek and US News and World Report. Fortune and Business Week kept free enterprise informed. And for the science in our hearts we had Popular Science, Popular Mechanics and the big one, Scientific American. Very popular in the sprots world was Sport which was top until Sports Illustrated came along. Men also had Esquire, GQ and the real old timer, Argosy. And then around 1950 there was “Mad!”. Which made my mind weird.

If eating at night is bad for your health, why do they put a light in the refrigerator?

Happy Birthday Bruce Hornsby!
