Cool waters running by.

Today's Tids Issue 5,406

Sitting in the Shade:

Now we face a brand-new week

With important things we all seek

Like finally finding domestic bliss

And perhaps to save a whale.

But most urgently we have today

When Easter chocolate goes on sale.

Trout season around here opened yesterday. Now in my estimation, that is what is called peacefulness, if you can get away from the throngs who think it is about catching fish.

A couple of nighttime super conservative talk show mavens seem to be pursuing a new direction. They seem to be compiling a list of less noisy Repub candidates. Maybe America is real tired of screamers. They say it may be time for a soft-spoken voice with lots of leadership timber; confident, rational.

If you find yourself breathless in a nursing home, it isn't because a beautiful nurse has entered your room. It just means that somebody stole your oxygen tank.

The Question:

Name five painters who would qualify as Best All Time.

I will not go to Chinese restaurant that puts peas in its fried rice.

For decades now, beginning with a small grey shingled shop on Cape Cod, people around here have been loving to find good quality stuff at bargain prices at The Christmas Tree Shops. Now people walking in are dismayed not only at the depressing environment, but also the lack of products that were always its hallmark. And if you talk to employees who have been there for decades, you sense a true feeling of despair. It appears now the store, which has changed its name to the cold and corporate CTS, is being run by disengaged disinterested money managers who have not a clue about customer needs. Overnight, it went from beloved to dreadful.

Actually, it isn’t that much different than stats guys and gals running the Boston Red Sox. They have forgotten about the passion in fans' hearts. Maybe Artificial Inteligent will face its doom by being Disengaged Intelligence. DI – Dumb Idiots.

The state of Connecticut is happy this morning. Following in sneaker clad footsteps of UConn's basketball team championship, little Quinnipiac College laced you their skating shoes and beat Minnesota for the NCAA Hockey Frozen Four Championships. Now, that’s quite cool.

Speaking of Hockey, yesterday the Boston Bruins set the new standard for games won in a season – 63. Of course, to fans around here, that means absolutely nothing if they don't win the Stanly Cup.

I like to imagine the person who while naming its invention the "brella", hesitated.

The TPL is very subtle today.

Wall Street bets on fads all the time. We have witnessed the rush to stupidity many times over the years. And I’m not saying that smart betters don’t make a lot money playing the fads. Those blips turn into blahs very rapidly. The latest is the falling off the lciff PC report. It turns out it is the reversal from  CP = Covid Pandemic where PC sales went through the roof as people stayed home and geared up home offices. This year's official report has Apple down 41% and Dell 32%, HP, Lanova and the rest all slowed down following the the move back to reality.

Isn’t it interesting how reality can often kill an economy

This reminds me of some rationality I once learned about restaurant biz. Many a poor owner enticed by watching the cultural success at a place down the street turned his business around to capturing those fickle crowds, but one eternal truism is that fads always end, Now, the restaurants that never give into the quick buck and continue serving great food, will always be there when the cultural revolutions end.

This week will be much too warm for April.

The Answer:

Everybody has their favorites, but these are a pretty good cross section for a starter class: Leonardi da Vinci, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Raphael and Salvador Dali. I like many including Cezanne, Homer, and Mary Cassette.

Expect short and sweet Tids the next several days. But often they are better.
