Discovery is not just the result of an idle pastime.

Today's Tids Issue 3,441
Opening Stuff:

Let’s have a great big cheer for the often maligned Christopher Columbus and his brave captains and seamen; those intrepid adventurers and risk takers who found the land that eventually became hope for all of the peoples of the world -- the tired and the poor, the religious and ethnically persecuted; strivers looking for unbound creative vistas. Yes CC opened an entire new world for myriads who had never seen the light of freedom, the glow of human understanding.

The classical singing group Il Divo is raising quite the ruckus over the Nobel Committee picking The National Dialogue Quartet for the peace prize. “We’re as peaceful as they come says,” spokesman, Carlos Marin. “And,” he added, “they couldn’t carry our throat spray, much less a Puccini aria.”

Our favorite French Train Hero Spencer Stone is going to have be more careful defending and running to the aid of the innocent. Apparently, his latest stabbing came after he rushed to save a woman who had been hit by the three knife wielding slugs. It appears that the woman knew the slugs and left with them regardless, Stone’s instincts seem to be, somebody’s in trouble and I have to react. Noble.

People are pouring lots of money into these fantasy football betting sites promising the eager victims huge payouts. The commercials are endless and monotonous, but one hit me: “Fan Duel has definitely changed my Sundays.” Remember when Sundays were for church?

The Question:
Name ten great explorers of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Bonus: Who were the captains of the Nina and the Pinta?

“O” says, “America has to come together on gun controls.” America has come together on gun control, rallying to protect an endangered second amendment; pushing for an end to enabling rampant inner city violence; asking for more openness of information on diagnosed potentially dangerous mentally ill. Yes, even without the prodding of the community organizer, Americans are on top of this.

Whether or not you like the personality of (Cardinals Pitcher) John Lackey, the guy has always been a money pitcher. He is tough when others wilt.

The new strategy for the Repubs is to appear entirely in disarray. It is designed to give Dems a false sense of confidence. There is nothing more ugly than an overconfident democrat, and voters see it. I think we (Republicans) got them right where we want them.

How many movies or TV programs about strong political women or women running for President do you think will be made between now and the 2016 elections. People are very good at transferring pure fiction to their own reality. And, Hillary’s pals in glitterville know it.

I think the young, chic elite are against the fixed income aging community. They beat the band for everything that is more expensive, like organic food and alternative energy. If they can’t write death panels into Obama care, they‘ll drive them out nickel by nickel.

By the way, has anybody seen a nickel lately? What can you use them for anyhow? They’re much too thick for golf ball markers.

The new slogan for Rhode Island the Ocean State is, The “Come Here and Get Soaked” State!

So, does today officially mark the end of tourists roaming? I think it does, because the town here has closed off just about every other street for reconstruction.

We marvel at engineers and scientists today developing amazing new technology. But, think for a moment about the guy or gal somewhere way back in time who figured out how to make the first slow, controlled burning candle. Think of the mind who understood the flammability of taro and the capillary action of a cloth wick combined to bring lasting light. I think it is rather amazing.

Keep your eyes open. You might discover something.

Red Sox fans who worry about having too many young players next year should take a look at some of the rookies leading the Cardinals in the playoffs this year.

The Parking Lot: Chapter 21.
The years between 1675 and 1678 were very difficult, yet oddly rewarding for Richard and his family. King Phillip was on a rampage as the newer waves of English colonists demanded more, often breaking the friendly promises of the original Plymouth settlers. In retaliation the Pilgrim militia attacked Mount Hope, today’s Bristol RI, the home of Metacom, who’s English Christian name was Phillip.  Phillips warriors countered with raids that destroyed many English settlements like Swansea and Rehoboth, towns within an easy days ride of Richard’s family lands. Beyond that, Nipmucs, Mohegans, Pequots Narragansett’s and many others native nations began to fight with colonies throughout New England.
Richard, like almost all Rhode Islanders, felt removed from anything related the Pilgrim colony, and only sought peace and growth with their native friends. But to the majority of Massachusetts colonists and Wampanoags and their ally tribes it wasn’t simple as that. War fever had spread, and former cooperative English-Indian alliances became fragile throughout the boarder region. It became harder to escape anger and hatred as the brutality of the war rose.
It wasn’t about beliefs that drove Richard to move his family earlier to the small, naturally protected lake island. It was about survival, and keeping his word with Joseph. He and Jeremiah would leave by canoe, mostly at night, sometimes to find food and other times, more importantly, make contact with Joseph or Red Shoes, and occasionally for Jeremiah, Elizabeth.
Jeremiah was maturing and became an active participant in the discussion between the two elders. During those times when Elizabeth would join her father, he would leave the two fathers to their secret talks on each sides attack plans, and meet his beautiful Elizabeth at quiet places near the meeting. While blood was flowing across the lands they knew, the stars and bight moon would light the love of two from warring sides.

The Answer:
Portugal became the richest nation in the world because of their brave captains exploration of formerly forbidden waters. Prince Henry the Navigator was the inspiration for Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco de Gama, Gil Eannes and Bartolomeu Dias. There was Henry Hudson, John Cabot, Amerigo Vespucci, John Smith, Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain, Ponce De Leon, Hernando DeSoto, Francis Drake. Francisco Pizarro, Walter Raleigh and Giovanni da Verrazzano. I’m sure you have your own favorites. Bonus: Lest we forget the other two…Vincente Pinzon was the Captain of the Nina. His older brother Martin Alonzo Pinzon was Captain of the Pinta and owner of both Nina and Pinta; he was a fierce rival of Columbus.

Imagine you are on the Santa Maria, or Nina or Pinta, sailing in fickle winds with nothing to see but endless roiling waters, fearing yet another storm. You are ragged and ill, scared and hungry for nourishment and firm soil beneath your feet. All of a sudden you hear, “Land. Land Ho,” and then the music rises as the land creeps up on the sailing ships: https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-006&ei=utf-8&fr=ytff1-yff16&p=YouTube%20zadoc%20the%20priest%20handel&type=

Welcome, Captain Columbus, to the British Colonies
