There’s always a lot of simple truths beneath the hysteria.

Today's Tids Issue 3,567
Opening Stuff:

I’m beginning to think that the apocalypse will arrive when the heads of the people’s of the world explode in unison because of much too much information in their brains.

Trump has to reignite his base while sounding intelligent and mature enough to sway more thoughtful voters.

In a newly released photo of the Groundhog who predicted an early spring, we see a our Feb 2 hero though a haze of pot smoke languishing amidst mountains of empty booze bottles.

I’m ready for the Master’s today. Will be as exciting as usual, especially if Gary Player’s hole in one yesterday is any indication of things to come. Oh, in addition to the names I listed as favorites and dark horses yesterday, readers had some of their own – the British Open Champ who is playing well, Zach Johnson is certainly one to watch. Also there is Jim Furyk who is always there, another youngster ready to break in Hideki Matsuyama and old reliable Matt Kucher. Also playing well right now is another former Master’s champ Charle Schwartzel. And the winner will probably be Brooks Koepke!

The Question:
Name the six states of the “Northwest Territory”, and what was the name of the first settlement and later first capital founded in 1788? Bonus: Name the 5 greatest Russell Crowe movies.

I am really ready for the world of Clare and Frank Underwood to collapse horribly around them. An assassination would be too good for him.

I believe that the Islamic state has reached an apex, and cannot become a significant influence on the world until it can acquire an air force, and other advanced weaponry. You can just go so far in Toyota pickup trucks. It’s strongest asset in addition to organizational skills has been humans willing to martyr themselves in surprise attacks. Surprise tends to become minimized the more they use it and potential targets prepare better against threats. Not to say I have stopped looking over my shoulder, or that the Jihadist leadership has taken its eye off of the goal of Islamic domination, it is just that their resources have reached a limit. They snuck up on Iraq and Syria, and that will probably not happen again. Of course, if the world remains stupid and embattled internally against themselves, the Islamic terror groups are always poised to creep in.

I see where my state in need of a new head of the Airport operation has formed a committee to examine four search companies who are vying for the job to guide the state in the search. What a waste.

I look at the rejected RI logo and I see a design that could not have come form a good graphics design house. My guess is that the State committee kept on asking for changes here and there and the result was the design company trying to do its best for a bad client. It happens all the time in the advertising business. Most people think they know everything they should about advertising because of “Mad Men”. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. Politicians like advertising agencies because it gives them something other than  themselves to blame. Most intelligent advertising people outside the political industry refuse government work. Advertising companies have a high regard for their own integrity.

Speaking of advertising – most convenience store ads say “We’re Open all night” because they can’t talk about low prices or broad selection or helpful personal.

A good friend of mine in the Financial services business tells me that one company of the many serving the public (Ameritrade, Schwab, ETrade, Wells Fargo, T Rowe Price et.al.)  was designated to represent all of them before Congress. They went and congress asked questions of their operations as they do. At the end, the representative financial company said their industry had only one request. They would like to have permission from congress to add a check-off box on customer profiles where customers could say they did or did not want to receive the myriad paper blast like annual reports, proxies, prospectuses or board selection vote ballots. Congress said no to this request that would save hundreds of millions of wasteful spending. The reason: “Some people may not have enough knowledge to be able to properly check the box (i.e. Do not send me all this crap)”. Yet these same lawmakers think the same people, are smart enough to vote for them! Or, maybe they know how smart the voting public really is.

BTW, J.D. Power rates the Top Ten On Line Brokerage firms: #10 is Merrill Edge followed by Wells Fargo, E*Trade, ING Direct, T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, Scott Trade, Vanguard and #1 is Charles Schwab. Note, Ameritrade Scottrade, Vanguard and Schwab are all 5 star raed and mere points apart in ranking.

The Parking Lot, Chapter 52 continues…
Richard was standing staring at the bloody mess, but his mind was racing. This day of trust and new beginning was turning into a moral dilemma. So much of what Richard and his brothers had been running from for so long, life by edict from me of small minds, had seemed finally to be ending in agreement and cooperation on the shores of the Sakonnet. This territory and that along the large Narragansett would be the true new world. Would it now, he wandered. Would a new world collapse because of one boy’s sin? It couldn’t.
Richard had rationalized moral dilemmas before for the good of people. Could he do it again? Could he be honest and quell the storm. “Load Zack on a wagon,” he blurted. “Cover him.” Jeremiah got the message without hearing his name, and went off.
Richard bent down and shook Aaron. “Boy, are you in there?” He turned to Elizabeth, “You really whacked him, didn’t you my dear.”
She smiled. She and Richard always had found a way to communicate in their own code. “I think I was mad!”  Richard gave her a knowing look. She looked back and wondered if Richard had an idea of what really happened to Big Howland. He might, she thought.
Richard reached behind Aaron’s shoulders and picked him up like sack of feathers. “Get walking,” he shouted, The boy, still groggy, wobbled while the two woman and Richard followed.
“Eliza,” he said while turning to his wife and lifting the heavy leather satchel from around his shoulder. Put this in our safest place. It is the future of all our worlds. It is our heritage, as well as this community’s.”

The Answer:
In 1788 The Northwest Territory only went as far as the Mississippi River. Bonus, Russell Crowe has won a lot of awards for some very good movies.   – Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, Master and Commander, Cinderella Man, 3:10 To Yuma, American Gangster The Next Three Days, Robin Hood and The Insider.
